I think it's really cool of Flowerchild to let the Bad Thing happen. It permanently changes the dynamic of your story, it has big fallout for the characters and the audience, and it requires a lot of restructuring and changing in the world you're writing: it's not easy, even if I think it's worth it. It's hard for me to say this is meeting Io's emotional needs, but it's the closest either of them know how to do that. Also, on some level nothing could make up for what Io's been through, so I guess like, good for them? At least you extracted some short term benefit.
