I get what you're saying and where you're coming from, but I simply can't see this going in the heartbreaky direction. I also don't necesaarily think Nanao's gonna go anywhere. I guess she might start going to brothels by herself, though. In any case, I really don't think this series has any sort of doom or gloom in its horizon.

Mai was about in a couple of chapters at the start but author -san seems to have forgotten about her.
Not that I'm complaining.

i dont know how the author is gonna get us to care about mai after this, she's been in like 3 chapters so far. i'm much more invested in nanao at this point and i'm just gonna be upset if she ends up heartbroken

That's my guess. I don't know for sure what's going to happen, obviously; but knowing this manga, I suspect that Nanao will start using brothels, she'll be the one to find Mai, and that'll probably lead into a poly ending.

I can't speak for shounen romcoms, but for shoujo series aquarium dates are kinda common but I wouldn't say they're the default. I've seen more amusement parks and festival dates for shoujo/josei manga. But in yuri, aquarium dates pretty much always happen LOL. Something about gazing at fish that just appeals to the sapphics I guess (also speaking from personal experience).
