hjyfun - not sure even that is enough. the art kept me coming back. the realism was intriguing, if not depressing. but there is absolutely zero enjoyment to be had from reading this anymore.

I mean, it's a series about a woman in a fucked up relationship (that plenty of people noticed before hand) and a different woman who's still yearning for her, while the former has some mixed and difficult feelings about being with women. It's hardly torture porn and we know this is going to end well, like, just go to Battan's twitter if you want to see some lovely drawn fluff.

This story is such a contrast to Even Though We're Adults, where the guy is worthy of sympathy. Here we have an explanation for why he's such a dick, but it's definitely not presented as excusing his behavior. From a story-telling perspective, I hope it actually comes back around in resolving his story arc and isn't just throw-away background for the character. Chekhov would not approve.

I am glad to see Midori finally showing some traces of expressing her own wants and preferences. She's always just gone with the flow, it feels like. (Is that what she calls her "bad habit"?)

It’s interesting to me how some readers seem to attribute some behavior to the characters themselves, and some to authorial manipulation, as if Tazune could “really” be a nice guy and a good match for Midori if the interfering author just didn’t force him into behaving badly for plot purposes.

The guy has been portrayed as superficially normal to people in the story but to readers obviously a king-hell dick from the first time we saw him, and we were given just enough glimpses of non-abusive behavior to justify (to some extent) why Midori was attracted to him in the first place.

mmm no quite, im not saying that tazune wasn´t suposed to be like that from the begining or that he acted out of character in order to advance the plot, as you mentioned the signs were there, what im triying to say is that after the first chapter it was nearly impossible for maki to end up with midori if the author didn´t use the abusive husband trope

This is a trainwreck, and I really want to see how it all wraps up.

Let's be clear, though this was the first time Tazune assaulted Midori, he's been abusive pretty much all through the series - you do not constantly denigrate your partner's intelligence to be nice. And the sex scene, obviously.

Given his overt misogyny, I'm pretty sure Tazune is gonna lose his shit when his fiancee ditches him for another woman.

AND MAY HE SPRINT IN FRONT OF A FUCKING TRUCK OVER IT.

I stopped reading a few chapters back; now I'm just waiting for the wrapped up series, to see if it's worth it, and reading the comments...

This mangaka has gone and done THE WORST FUCKING THING that they could do for me. The mangaka has decided an antagonist, who most likely will never have any kind of redemption arc or reason to care about in any way, a back story to explain why he does the shitty, horrible, dirtbag bullshit he does. NEWS FLASH WRITER: WE DON'T CARE! The character is an outright shitbag, and we don't want to story to focus on him AT ALL. Literally nothing he does will change our opinions of him at this point, and solidifying his shittyness with a backstory like this, will only lose you readers. NOTE TO FUTURE/CURRENT WRITERS: DON'T DO THIS. It is a complete waste of our time. I didn't finish this chapter, and will not be reading any more of this manga. The art is lovely, but the writing needs a lot of work.

Sorry for the rant, but holy shit this is a major pet peeve of mine.

I seriously doubt that Midori is acting like this toward Maki because she takes any joy out of messing with her.

I definitely agree, she doesn't seem like an outright malicious person, however if she was aware just how much Maki loved her when she walked away from her in high school, then waltzing back into her life like nothing was wrong still makes her behaviour wrong, no matter how messed up she might be on the inside.

This is why I want the flashback chapter from Midori's POV, it's hard to make judgements on a character with incomplete information.

I fundamentally disagree. I mean, I'm not gonna say you can't hate it, you're entitled to your opinion and I get where you're coming from, but I think it's interesting to explore why a terrible person is terrible sometimes. It solidifies him as an antagonist, it doesn't make excuses for his behavior, and it strongly sets up the stakes. This guy is fundamentally damaged and misogynist, and he is not going to change. Midori needs to get the fuck out. I'm not sure that would be as clear without this chapter.

(Edit: I mean I can't count how many times I've been reading comments on a story and seen people making excuses for awful behavior, because the author didn't outright show that they're rotten to the core.)

Midori's husband just went from a passive agressive jerk to a full blown abusive asshole.

Edit: While I'm rooting for Midori and Maki to get together in the long run. I think Maki needs to keep some distance between them for now. It's obvious that Midori has to leave that dick, then spend some qulity me time before she will be able form a healthy relationship. Maki should stick around and help Midori as a friend, but she should definitely hold back any dating talk, until Midori is in a better place.

tfw some people would jump to the defense of a previously-incel turned probable-cheating wife-beater that regularly insulted his "lover" even before this.

Yes, exactly that. I'm amazed some commenters are talking as if the events in this chapter caught them by surprise. It was so freaking obvious violence was the next step. This guy is like a textbook abuser: started nice and gentle, moved on to verbal abuse, controlling behavior, embarrassing her in front of her friends and coworkers to further alienate her from them... we already had the whole range of psychological coercive tactics, everything checked out five by five. The time was right for that brutal blow to the face that busted her nose and lips and knocked her to the floor -- a move that should terrify her and teach her not to talk back when her man lays down the law! That's Tonoike Tazune for you: nobody special, just your everyday garden-variety patriarchal abuser.

but any time there's an new itou hachi manga everyone loses their shit about the gentle and noble protagonist being "disgusting" or "problematic"

really makes you thonking

I know, right?

He's been abusive from the start, so this doesn't surprise me much tbh. My only personal gripe, really, is that it's taking that to set up the next step. I preferred when the asshat was less overt, and was hoping Midori would change without the help of him being an absolute monster. i really do hope she gets far, far the hell away from him.

But that said... I also don't think it's wrong of me to hope that incel POS gets hit by a fiery garbage truck.

Hmm, so girls told him he's a creep ugly as fuck. Guess what, that hasn't changed. What he is now reflects what he has ALWAYS been inside: creep, ugly as fuck.

I disagree. I don't think phisical violence was nessessrily in the cards, some abusers are satisfied with psychological abuse. I just think the author took it to this level to really drive home the point this relationship is toxic for Midori. So there is no chance the reader would side with the husband, when Midori takes his unborn child and runs from him.

This mangaka has gone and done THE WORST FUCKING THING ... of mine.

The writing is fine and his backstory serves as a way to sort of amplify 'No, no Tazune isn't just bad with Midori, he's a misogynistic asshole with a chip on his shoulder for being bullied as a kid and then grew up to basically be a pick up artist". Like... Given the fact that at least some people in the forum didn't see the red flags here, it's hardly a bad thing.

Like Heavensrun say "I mean I can't count how many times I've been reading comments on a story and seen people making excuses for awful behavior, because the author didn't outright show that they're rotten to the core." The fact that it took a chapter of showing that dude has a history of misogyny and just hit a woman for basically zero reason and not all the shit before kind of highlights its necessity.

He's been abusive from the start ... that incel POS gets hit by a fiery garbage truck.

Given that some people clearly didn't catch that and thought he was 'just being an inconsiderate jerk' before really means I can't complain. Also: He's a pick up artist sort of misogynist, not an incel. Still deserves the garbage truck though :P

lmfao what.

What other antagonists can we think of who were given back stories and depth to explain their awful choices actions, hmm: Voldemort, Thanos, Vader.. the fucking purple teddy bear from Toy Story lmfao. Where did you study to be telling people to avoid giving their antagonists depth?

People aren't suppose to like Tazune, we are explicitly made to dislike him. He sucks a lot and Battan did a good job making this feel as natural as possible. The story feels more realistic than other manga, every character has flaws and baggage and we can understand What they're thinking/feeling and I think its going to be a satisfying read.

Also, I don't think Battan will miss your readership, theres the door.

Few things are as satisfying and, ultimately, as wholesome as someone managing to get out of an abusive relationship and managing to find real love with someone who cares about them

I'm hopeful that's what'll end up happening here - and i mean, yeah, it hurts to read until then, but unfortunately that kind of thing is all too realistic. At least here I can have reasonable hope that it'll end well...

Well if this was supposed to be a learning lesson, then what I got out of it was:
If the person has been a jerk, there might have been a good reason for it, but that doesn’t mean you should let that person keep being a jerk to you.
Doing that will only make your situation worse.

Yeah i didn't find his back story sympathetic either. He made his own choices, no one made them for him.
