The course of music doesn't always run smoothly, lets not forget that when The Police were recording Synchronisty they hated each other so much that they recorded their parts in separate rooms.

I think you mean Synchronicity.

And yeah, Sting could be kind of an authoritarian asshat, which especially rubbed Copeland the wrong way.

I mean, there are artists who just hire studio musicians too. But yeah, it looks like she wants someone to play off of.

The age old challenge of finding the right mix of musicians to make a functional band.
Hmm… I wonder if that new girl with a vibration shaped hair band might be instrumental to solving this problem.

So is it time to actually make it into a Girl Band story? (lol)

I mean there are already so much of that kind so not sure how can this stand out…

But still, I binged this whole stuff in a few hours, and boy am I glad to arrive at this perfect time! Even if it’s just 4 pages each time, I am just so excited! How will they perform and beat their obstacles, and I am curious to know how will it turn out in anime! (But funny enough, this kind of story is the exact kind I know would fit to have multiple seasons telling different stories and solving different conflicts. Just shows the growth, you know? Usually most manga just have one huge conflict throughout and they just have to get it done in one season.)

Excited to see the next part!

Haha, poor Mitsuki.
Maybe she should go back to the Fleetwood Mac-type band. They didn't seem to do too badly for themselves ;)

I'm confused, why would she play in a band with some tiktok girls? Just find a few metalheads.

is that one girl saying the guitar part is going viral?

I think she was pointing out that they couldn’t cut the part that was going viral, so they had to cut the guitar solo instead.

Well, the guitar part has to be in service of the song. That said, it's still rough to get told that your part will be cut. Been there, done that.

Maybe they could just shorten her solo? I mean, the song needs a break, right?

That is true and they do have a point about shortening the song. Part of the issue, though, is that it’s clear the other girls in the band all have a very “corporate” mindset. They’re not cutting the solo because they believe the song’s better without it, they’re cutting it because they think a shorter song will get more clicks, and the solo just so happens to be the most cuttable segment. It reinforces what the last couple chapters have been indicating, which is that the other three members of the band are in it for the fame. That’s not automatically a bad thing, and bands do often benefit from having at least one member with a more businesslike mindset, but it does heavily contrast with Mitsuki’s more artistic mindset.

On top of that, it’s probably a bit troubling for Mitsuki, who used to struggle with her unique sense of style and identity, to see how far these girls are willing to change both their music and themselves in order to go viral. Sure, they’re fine with how she looks now, but how many more comments will it take before they decide that the algorithm would be better served by having Mitsuki “match the vibe.”

I think she was pointing out that they couldn’t cut the part that was going viral, so they had to cut the guitar solo instead.

My reading on it was the opposite - she’s pointing out that the guitar part is what’s driving the popularity to the girl who wants to cut the solo to make it shorter.

Well, the guitar part has to be in service of the song.

We obviously can’t hear the song to know whether/how much it clashes with the rest of the song. The other girls’ opinion might not actually improve it.

Plus, it of course depends on the type of music they’re making. Your Joe Satrianis and Yngwie Malmsteens aren’t going to look at a beefy guitar solo as holding the music back. :3 And plenty of HUGE rock hits are defined by their solos. Which goes to the point someone else made earlier that this may be too much of an oil/water mix for Mitsuki given her guitar-god influences and aspirations. She doesn’t want to be a viral pop star like the other girls.

"Your guitar is super cool, but people need to listen to the song first, right?"

Nowadays everyone can make music and post it on Spotify. Even record labels use social media to find singers, etc. Going viral is The way and with so many people doing the same thing, well. It is a double-edged sword. It is a way to ensure a career and that you can make a living doing what you like, but at the same time you trade your creativity for security. For example, you can notice the change of style in many japanese bands after they do an anime opening and became viral.

Another (dumb) example but if you found a singer on SC called “Himejoshi” with a track named “green yuri” you are going to think “haha cool” and listen to it, but if the singer's name was Marie and the track was called 01, chances are you'd probably don’t.

You attract people to your music, with something that is not your music. For better or worse, it's how things work nowadays.

Also, I don’t think metalheads are any better than tiktok girls in this matter.

Yeah, I think it's a little early to decide if this is a problem with the girls or if it's just Mitsuki getting in her own way again. Nothing they're saying is necessarily wrong, but it depends on if this is a pattern where Mitsuki always comes second to the rest of the band or if it's just down to this particular situation.

It's not wrong to point out that you need people to hear your music if you want to be a successful musician. But it's also true that compromising the quality of your music to hit better in an algorithm doesn't necessarily lead to the long term goals you might want for your work.
