Trapped in an elevator in the rain. That's a new one. Usually they'd go into a Love Hotel.

That was not at all where I expected this chapter to go. Omg, how does this story keep surprising me.

I’m not saying it doesn’t appear that way or that people who read it that way are wrong even if I disagree. I’m legitimately interested in what causes the different perspectives on this.
What is the biggest cause of people perceiving it as colonization?

Is it the text? Either because of the original writing or potentially by extension my translation of it.

Is it the visual imagery? That’s why I asked about the clothing before. Obviously from a western lens, those clothes with dark skin has a certain reading regarding natives and “savages” and is often used in colonization narratives. But from the Chinese lens from which the story was written those are just poor commoners clothes and their dark skin has been well established as part of the Mulai people. They’re not things associated with colonization.

Is it the structure of the narrative that’s muddied the authors intent and given it the appearance of something it wasn’t intended to be?

I just find this all interesting

Nah, they just have massive "colonizer" bias.
To the extent they don't even have the ability to read this story in the setting that it's in - a setting of kingdoms where the land is already owned by the various nobles.
And if they have issues with that setting, I don't know why they're even reading this in the first place. It's not exactly a secret how the world was run by nobles. We still use the term "landlord" even now.

Genuine question, is all of the talk about colonizers based solely on the villagers outfits?

My reading of Hesha’s desire to acquire the village is to bring it under her families control and thereby free the villagers from the rule of Mulai, a kingdom that these women fled from and that has been consistently shown to treat women as little more than objects.

That is a very charitable reading, and Hesha has already demonstrated her ability to learn empathy for the less fortunate classes before. We will see how this arrangement works out in the future chapters. :-)

Seconding the sentiment that it’s a very charitable reading. I’m sure the story will try to paint our leads as good people for doing this, while also trying to continue to justify it with “well you attacked us so whatever we do is fair game”, cool story author still colonization.

The buying of people and their land regardless of how they dress and so forth is still colonization, buying their goods at cheap prices when they are unaware of the market and their value is part of colonization, even if our noble ladies are being framed as good people by nobly saving this village of women with their wealth it's still colonization.

It's not just a "charitable reading". Do ya'll even know what story you're already reading?
The land is already owned by the one ruling over it, they don't "own" the village.
The intention to buy is just to move it from one lord to another lord.
A bit of reading comprehension of the setting goes a long way. I thought more of Dynasty Readers' readers than this.

You seem to be missing out on the awesomeness of tails ;)

Damn, these wholesome magical girl villains, using their transformation powers for a wholesome outing.

Yeah, I could ignore the background up until that point where they show the Saintess in the middle of a hauntingly empty road just to have a "crowd" spawn in the next page.

Considering she specifically called out the desertedness of the street before the randomly spawning crowd, we were supposed to notice it was empty.

I think Japanese high schoolers would know them from getting measured during school health inspection.

Really? I think most people would instantly forget it.
I measured my height a lot when I was a kid, that number instantly left my brain the moment I was told it.

This is a gag manga, it's always been silly.

Silly isn't the same as stupid, or devoid of logic. And if it's a gag manga then it's also supposed to be funny. Like maybe Future-Herself turning up with a laughably bad disguise might've been funny. Or it actually turning out to be just a coincidence (expectations subverted!). Or her Future-Self could be crazy different. Or there could have been a dozen Future-Selfs all turning up at this very moment because they just happen to all travel back to the same time. Or something. Certainly you can make more out of this than "everyone's a moron".

What a weird take. "gag" manga doesn't mean it has to be absurd levels of comedy. This manga in particular hasn't been off-the-wall comedy. This is pretty normal for the tone we've been reading so far. Somewhere half between serious and kind of insane.

I think people can know that this is a drama series and still not be into the current arc for various reasons. While I’m still looking forward to future chapters I understand why this isn’t landing for everyone, and my own feelings are a bit mixed on the current progression.

That wasn't my point at all. My point is that people are like "this isn't the format for drama."
Like ... it has been from the start, just because you don't like fighting arcs in stories, doesn't suddenly make it unfit for this format.

drama? in MY drama manga?

Yeah, the way people act, you'd think they hadn't been reading a 4-page drama manga right from the beginning...

People arguing about the type of title given, when there's me here just thinking the writer likes to throw random plot points around willy-nilly, lol. Not complaining, I like this story and all, but it seems like "this is a good idea, let's do it! Now!"

Disappointing that this arc turns into a "every girl falls for Asumi". It was fun when Asumi's simply having sex and good times with them, but now instead it's looking more and more like a generic harem.

Serina downgraded from sex worker to dumb love interest throwing things away to be closer to the protagonist. At least others like Sayaka do remain their own person, even though the "Asumi's special" angle is still problematic.

I should have seen the writing on the wall with Nao, but I thought it was a one-time thing introducing a bit of tension with Mai. Didn't expect others the follow the same path.

I dunno, feels like you're the one who wants a boring story here. What purpose is there in Asumi only ever paying for sex with the girls? I want to see them get closer in a more intimate way.
Serina not being a sex worker any more doesn't mean she can't have sex with other people as she wants. She just removed a barrier to being able to see Asumi properly, since seeing your clients outside of work is a no-no. "Sex worker" isn't really a personality, so I don't understand your insistence that it somehow makes them their "own person" by working there.

Please be smart, Wakana.

Either come up with a good excuse, or hold her down so Ruruna can bite her.

In real life, there should be some therapy involved here. In stories? Fair game, let's go!
