Turns out Aya isn't just moping around with her phone and Mitsuki will find her completely wasted off of non-alcoholic juice.

Aya decides to have fun by herself instead of getting all depressed in a once-in-a-lifetime event. Mitsuki finds her laughing with her friends and mistakenly thinks that Aya doesn’t need her. Enter the next arc: separation.

I doubt it will go this way though with all that build-up since last chapter. But if it did go this way, what a waste. Author has no mercy.

I honestly cannot tell with Mitsuki.. on the one hand she is clearly treating Aya differently from others, literally got upset/jealous that Aya had a crush on "Onii-san" and how she could never be that person, wrote that goddamn love song for her, and thought it was obvious that if either of them would go to prom they would go together.. yet she doesn't exactly act like she has a crush on Aya when they are together

I have two theories she either a) hasn't realized that her feelings for Aya go beyond simple friendship and is not conscious of her own queerness yet (she is pretty young, and from what we know did not hang out with many kids her age) b) she knows what her feelings mean and thinks it is obvious for Aya too and not something she has to say out loud (see: how nonchalant she was about the love song and being prom dates, and she heard in detail about Aya's crush on "Onii-san")

edit: okay lol I went back and re-read the whole story (it was supposed to be just a few chapters, I swear!)
and on top of Mitsuki being completely aware of Aya's crush on her, she was also aware that she flirted with her a few times (though she didn't plan to do it, she did realize some of the things she did!) and when she hugged Aya after the school bullying thing and coming to school in her own style, her voice over literally says "thank you for loving me as I am" sooo uhh yeah I would she has to have a pretty clear understanding of the entire situation.. it just seems that Aya is not confident about what their hug meant and she doesn't think that Mitsuki thinks of her as anything more than a friend (technically, she hasn't said anything to Aya directly and Aya is not great with English so she didn't understand the song Mitsuki played for her and probably had trouble reading the love song as well! and Mitsuki even has a "Me To Her" song on her CD so, yeah, it's not even just one song..)

narrative-wise I do believe that picture of prom is real, Mitsuki doesn't have to be physically there for the mangaka to show the prom

the curious part for me is, that something caught Aya's attention and she looks up at the end - is that because Mitsuki arrived in the meanwhile, or did something else happen?

I don't need to be convinced Mitsuki has feelings, but I think Mitsuki needs to be convinced that she has feelings, and that it's allowed for her to have feelings.

Was it really a love song? or was the bully guy just saying that? To be honest I think we should have had some sort of internal monologue about sexuality or them wondering if the feelings are romantic. Even Aya doesn't seem to have given it that much thought she was like "oh my crush is a girl, well okay" but hasn't made a move and neither has she exactly been in denial either. But at least with Aya it seems to read as though she doesn't want to ruin the friendship, as for Mitsuki... I'm not sure what she's thinking at all. I mean are teenagers in Japan already so comfortable in their sexuality that they kinda take it for granted that something is romantic without talking about it? lol not even a "do you like girls?"

honestly, the fact that Aya completely sidestepped the gay panic is one of my favourite aspects about this manga.

(i like this manga's æsthetic so much, it inspired this forty year old lady to get her first tattoo this year lol)

but now I wonder if Mitsuki has been thinking Aya could be straight (hence her getting jealous of herself…)

When I saw the chapter title I was like "oh no what did Joe do at the airport?!," glad to see that not only did not not highjack a plane (as far as we know) the chapter wasn't even about him but about Mitsuki being suave as fuck. Damn she looks amazing on that last page.

Nice, using "music" literally and metaphorically, while having Koga step in and change the tune. That's good stuff. No, don't conform to the "popular music!" Remember your rocker GF, she's slow and mysterious but she's finally here.
