I have to agree that the dress is positively atrocious

That's really the point. I'm not a very visually sensitive person, and yet the damn graph dress jumped out at me. I might not have noticed the lack of drapery if it had at least respected chest/arm boundaries, but it didn't. (I didn't noticed the filled skirt until I was looking over things more critically, because of the dress.) It was bad enough that someone who by default skims over the art went "wait, hold up".

You can see similar things even in high-budget promotional art that you'd expect had dozens of eyeballs over it. (Another example; Persona in general is frequently guilty of it.)

Probably an artist or tailor would be more sensitive, but for me those fill patterns are "good enough". The Persona guy's folds seem plausible at first glance. I do have a problem with blue girl's top, but it's less about the fill and more about "what are these lines and pieces even supposed to be?"

It's a valid observation, but ultimately not any different to "real hair doesn't work that way". Like, yes, so what? You choose to pick up the picture book with the deliberately exaggerated and stylized art.

There are degrees of expectation, as you know.

I think the skirt is fine and completely within expectations for manga screentones. The dress though... This pattern was not a good choice. It is not at all properly scaled or adjusted to the character's body, which isn't anything new when it comes to screentones, but the square grid absolutely exaggerates the issue. Even setting all that aside, it's just kind of ugly in the first place; I can't really imagine a real dress with this pattern, unless the squares were very small.

Holy shit that's why I don't normally delve into the comment sections of these mangas.
Like wtf.

Imma gonna positively enjoy the fluffiness it has to offer and end up with diabetes after it ends. Have we seen a story like this? Yes. Is it unbelievably fucking cute and endearing? Yes. Does the art detract from the experience? No, not really.
It's like, I don't fucking need a 4K OLED to enjoy Higurashi.

You guys over here go ahead and contemplate how absolutely immaculate you would've made every single pixel of every single hair strand and of every cloth patch on every single fucking page.
Gimme a break and go nitpick on some psychological survival horror manga with some 10 fucking layers of inception in it

I think the dress discussion is a bit much as well but this response is crazy.

this is so funny because i'm an artist and i've been experimenting with screentones lately and when i read it i didn't notice a single issue with the patterns, clothes, etc. none of it registered! i was much more focused on the cute girls being girlfriends than anything else. literally didn't even know there was a problem til i checked the forum lmao. yall need to get your priorities straight (or not-straight. either way)

The response embodies why AI slop will win/has already won. Not just that people do not care, people actively reject anything that challenges their bubble with even the most minor of critiques. Consume the content.

Enjoy quality manga while you still can.

Eh I don't agree with this. There's more people critiquing it and it's 1 person saying to blindly accept it. The world is a big place, and even before this there's always been people that will and people that won't accept whatever it is. There's still plenty of people pushing back against ai slop and making things directly counter to it, and people supporting those efforts. Just because some people accept the slop doesn't mean it "has won or will win", it only means some people are okay with it. Very different example but just because there's some homophobes out there doesn't mean that homophobia has won or will win.

Anyways this isn't even ai as far as we know.

Loving the "me and the baddie I bagged by being autistic" vibes

Ah, my favorite sub-genre.

This pretty much nails it. It's just badly done, so it breaks the illusion of form for more people than usual. People are going to have different thresholds for how easily the illusion is broken for them; I've spent enough time drawing drapery and clothing that pretty much every use of a flat pattern on clothing breaks the illusion for me and I just roll with it because I know how much time and tedium is involved in hand drawing patterns to fit the folds is, but the fact that people who aren't aware of the practice are noticing is an indication that this didn't quite hit that level of 'good enough' not to be visually distracting for the average reader. Maybe they were rushed for time, who knows. A square grid is a more difficult pattern to pull off too.

Ironically the dress doesn't really feel like it needs a pattern, it's got enough shapes to it to be visually interesting on its own.

Me too. They got a nice personality dynamic.
