Takahashi survived, but has become too normal to stomach eating anyone for a skinsuit, so she instead went home to the Gobi desert to live in solitude. Itou* spent 2-4 years searching for her in between finishing high school and starting college, eventually getting together the resources for an expedition to the Gobi to find Takahashi. Which she did. We're left to imagine how that meeting plays out, so in that respect you could call it a cliffhanger. But I doubt Takahashi's eating Itou, so this is probably ending with Itou joining Takahashi in the hermit life. Or maybe they raid a morgue together, who can say~

*: They started calling her Yuki, so I assume her full name is Itou Yuki. But I'm so used to calling her Itou that I didn't even realize I didn't know her given name...

I interpret this manga thusly: a neurodivergent, let's just say autistic, individual finds her special interest, and commits to it to the point of being willing to die. I view this as the literal reading. More esoterically, let's proceed from the fact that Itou wants to become part of Takahashi. She wants to be enveloped by Takahashi, she wants (her skin) to be full of Takahashi, and she wants Takahashi to eventually present as her. Take the special interest reading, and we can interpret this as Itou wanting to integrate her special interest into her identity. She wants to be enveloped by her special interest, she wants to be full of her special interest, and she wants her special interest to be what people see when they interact with her.

I'm not sure everyone can relate to this feeling of a not-completely-obsessive interest in a less-than-proper topic, but to me this really resonated.

Well...At least, she survived!
Despite its darker themes, this manga was real fun and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were entertaining, and the overall pacing kept the story engaging. While it concluded on a strong note, my main complain is that the final chapter felt a bit abrupt compared to where we left off in Chapter 29.

I'm surprised the author (...) also got attached to the yuri.

Open endings are the pits. Oh well I guess she found her in the end yay I guess.

I wish that the series had run longer as there was clearly more the author wanted to say and do, and yet for how short this manga was the ending is really satisfying.

Ya know this ending was strangely satisfying. Maybe some more yuri scenes but then it would be interspecies lol. Hopefully we get to see more work from this author its very unique. I wish there was more but for how long it was it was fulfilling. Thanks to all involved as always.

I like to think that maybe Takahashi is like a mix of her monster form and rotting human suit. Mr N told her Itou loves the suit and they wanted it to be loved by her (and that really got a reaction out of her). Also her body disappeared so it adds up in a way.

Of course this is all an interpretation, this manga ended off satisfyingly for how short it was. Thank you for the translations, the notes were always informative and interesting!

love this interpretation. i read it all in one go now that it's finished and, yeah, as an autistic person with my own extremely fixed obsessive (and isolating!) interests, it hit home. even the ending is like... it's years after. itou is no longer in the middle of it. but even with distance and time and growth, it's still who she is on a fundamental level. i have a Thing like that myself where i was so deep in it at one point in my life, it was self-destructive, but years after the fact i love it, and i will continue to love it and define myself by that love for the rest of my life.

if there's one thing that stuck out to me about the last chapter, it's when they talk about white lies. i guess it's connecting to the human vs monster thing previously, and therefore bringing itou closer to the "human" side where takahashi is. but... i guess it just feels weird to me. i'm not sure i agree with that being kindness, and not just cowardice? and if anything, rather than growth for itou, it feels like crushing her into this box and calling that growth. i know she spent the whole manga saying she wanted, desperately, to be normal. but i think there's a sweet spot somewhere, where you can keep your principles and be truly honest, while also showing consideration for other people. just because you read the room doesn't mean you need to agree with the room, you know? so i have mixed feelings, i guess.

I liked the ending. As much as I'd have liked to see Itou getting snacked, there's just no way to pull that of. Like, what are you gonna do? Hard cut at the chump? Show "Itou" adjusting to her new life? Meh. This one is actually more emotionally resonant.

With Itou being death-seeking in a way and relying on Kotaki to (somewhat) ground her, my delusions from ch. 18 weren't even that unrealistic.

What I do not like are the plotholes and -contrivances that have piled up. Like the Ooki ex Machina ... btw she just kinda believed that abhorrent mockery of the human form going "Wasn't me, I swear. Some school girl did it!", huh?

And let's not forget the "clever" retcon of what Mr. N is, going from making little sense to none at all (and I'm willing to suspend quite a lot of disbelief for mongolian death worm GF with a mallet). Actually, everything about Mr. N sucks. Execution, motivation, even the "it's abuse so it's deep" backstory. Giant blemish on an otherwise wonderful series.

This was an okay ending. In a way, I don't think there could be an ending that would satisfy any kind of majority, considering how many outcomes this could have had. So having one be this open, as rare as it is for me to admit that, is fitting.

That was a rather nice way to end this. Wishing them a long life together listening to all the music they like, then. ^_^

I'm fine with the general thematic core of the ending but the time skip off screening so much character development just really kinda sucks. I really did love this series and a lot of it will stick with me for a long time, but it feels very much like something was lost by having Ito's character development relayed this way, being talked about in the form of clumsy expository dialogue rather than taking place over the course of the series.

10/10 would wander through the desert for five days to reunite with worm wife.

Maybe it makes me weird but I actually quite liked the open ended nature of that finale. Did Takahashi eat Itou? Did she refuse? If she refused, did Itou stay with Takahashi in the Gobi or did she return to Japan, satisfyed at simply having gotten to meet her again or did Itou just wander off into the desert chasing a mirage that wasn't really there?

There are a few things I wish could have been elaborated upon. Ooki saw her friend being devoured and discovered the existence of monsters, how did that affect her? And what about Itou's grandmother, as I recall there were some implications that she knew more than she was letting on but aside from those, it was a great manga and a good ending in my mind. Enjoyed it overall.

I agree with laborgay, and would say that having Takahashi eat Itou would have “made” this yuri (I don’t doubt the yuri nature of this manga just citing a comment above).
