That does a solid job kicking some of the old discussion, lmao.

Oh wow, this thread really went off the rails. I don't know if it would have helped if I'd found it during Ch1, but I think it might help to understand a bit about how Japan treats trans-ness.

Transpeople in Japan can only change their legal sex after they'd had bottom surgery, and cultural thinking follows suit. Even transwomen who are obviously taking hormones are legally and culturally treated as men if they haven't or aren't planning on getting bottom surgery (and the same is true for transmen). Even though this chapter has now made it explicitly clear that Hikaru thinks about herself the same way we understand transwomen do in the west, she's most likely going to keep considering herself a man in the text.

Personally, I'm also treating this as a trans story, even if it's comedic and not taking more than a few panels to explore concepts like dysphoria. Hopefully this'll help others understand why Hikaru is likely going to keep thinking "...though I'm a man" despite being very much a transwoman as it goes on. I'd also wager that this is why the author called it "not a yuri story" as was mentioned back on page 4; Hikaru is being considered a man, at least for now.

Really mixed about this chapter.

On one hand it’s nice to see a character question who they are and what they’re comfortable being.

On the other, the bathroom scene of a stranger clocking then sexually harassing our MC was extremely uncomfortable to read.

I’m not sure about continuing this.

Alright well, I'll admit I was wrong. I'm glad to be wrong.

Sorry, ElPsyKongroo.

Everyone's getting worked up over the MC, but me? I'm just here for the ojou-sama with the personality of a goblin. ^_^

To be honest, I don't get why people are saying this chapter enhanced the trans reading. It looks to me like it's actually going out of its way to deny a trans reading.

Self denial is part of the trans experience. "I'm not allowed to be a girl, if I really think about it, I'm still a man," etc. are pretty relatable moments in a trans journey.

The most offensive thing about this so far is that a character in a supposedly "yuri" game immediately got on her knees to look at a dick when she realized the MC has a male body. That's ridiculous and perpetuating a harmful trope.

Otherwise it's not so bad. As a cis heterosexual male and a yuri fan, I don't really fantasize about "getting involved" so to say, but I guess it hits home for those who do.

dicks are not exclusively male genitals and lesbians are allowed to be attracted to them

Very funy for Hikaru to just immediately tell Itsuki that of course it's fine for her to be here, of course you don't need to be the ultra specific stereotype of a woman to belong. women can be many shapes it's fine in fact Itsuki should feel welcomed.

But then Hikaru turns around and starts spiralling "not me though, I definitely don't belong, unlike Itsuki" it's very real in a good way how just a little distance can dispell the fog of your own insecurities but pulling back to yourself immediately calls that same fog back. Everyone is in a perfectly understandable acceptable situation, except for me of course.

Super excited to see this continue.

That's not how it's portrayed though, at that moment she doesn't see the MC as a woman. She sees a man and gets insta thirsty. That is messed up.

So i see you stopped reading exactly there, considering she comes out about liking women on literally the next page

It would be nice if we get "I love you as a girl, now gimmie that d-" but given that Japanese media doesn't have a great track record with this kind of stuff (usually boiling it down into "all lesbians really need is to meet the right man", if not something chaser-y), people are understandably still cautious. I have some hope for this one, but we won't know until we get more translated chapters!

I think she means the scene in the first chapter, not the one in the third

I think Itsuki problem is not related to her appearance. The implication is that, in a all-girls school, she is attracted to women and feels guilty for not telling them and “tricking” them.
We are very used that in all-girls school settings, majority of characters are attracted to girls and those who are not still see it as something common. Even our MC is like “Huh? I already knew” But for example, MariMite and Strawberry Panic also had the “real” lesbian characters and made that differentiation between them vs the cast.

I think that scene is there to highlight our protagonist's insecurity and guilty conscience about her body. Itsuki feels “guilty” for being a girl attracted to girls, Hikaru obviously tells her that's okay (duh a yuri game) but then she thinks about her situation. She doesn't doubt it's okay for Itsuki to be there because Itsuki is a girl, but her? she is not a “real” girl.

Appstore. I am not going to quote because I don't want to fill up the page with repeated text so instead here's my response.

Yeah, that's what I meant mate. Because under the hood it doesnt matter if you're a lesbian or a trans woman or whatever. If you are a woman who doesn't fit the patriarchal mold of what a woman should be you're going to be made to feel insecure about it. Hikaru and Itsuki are both insecure about the personal ways they don't fit the mold but whether it's dysphoria or internalized homophobia they both, to simplify it, don't fit that mold.

Hikaru can recognize this and reassure Itsuki about it but cannot do so for herself because she's convinced herself that in the same way you do. It's somehow a different situation when at it's core it is not.

Both of them feel like they're not a real girl and both of them are real girls (provided they wanna be). Hikaru can recognize this when looking at Itsuki but not when looking at herself. Because those same insecurities convince her that somehow she's not actually (for as much as I hate the term) valid.

I had an extra paragraph typed up where I got a little passive aggressive but honestly I don't need that energy, neither in my life nor in this forum.

I wasn’t being rude or anything so I really don’t understand what I said warrants this response or how it offended/annoyed you (your response already sound passive-aggresive).
I simply thought that when you used the word “shape” and “specific stereotype of a woman to belong” you mean that Itsuki felt insecure for her masc appareance so I added my thoughts. The quote option exist to have that type of conversation. I misunderstood your comment, that's my fault, but again I don't think I said anything that warrants this reaction.

I don’t know why everyone on the forum is always on edge for confrontation.

Yeah, I know that, I'm trans myself. But as of now, I just don't think this is at all enough to say the character is meant to be trans and seems to actually be actively trying to turn down that reading. I've read more than enough similar manga that seemed way more trans that turned out to actually strongly deny that for me to think this is enough.

MC specifically experienced alienation from being a man, which is common in trans women but not enough to say much either way.

Also Misono so obviously just wants to have a penis herself who are we kidding.

I can't believe I didn't read this sooner. I'm not transfem so I can't speak to accuracy, but that first chapter was so real and so funny. All the way from Hikaru's dysphoria from her realization about her body to Misono's chaser ass instincts (love her though, funny and odd as she is).

I really loved Chapter 3 too. It's so sweet how Misono and Itsuki affirm her here. I might seriously cry. So cute!! I'm so happy I read this, I hope Hikaru gets the sweet and happy ending she deserves. Just thinking about it makes me tear up a bit.

I'm so happy, in fact, that I won't bother to look at what the previous 200 other commenters said about this! Wow, 200 comments while it only had 2 chapters, surely you all loved it too!!!! (blissful ignorance)

I don't particularly like that moment, but I don't think this reading is right. Misono was just curious. It's an important detail that this girl says she has practically never seen a man before.

But more crucially, we never see her get on her knees, especially in a position that would imply submission. The one panel where her knees are visible, she is crouching to be level with Kaoru who was already sitting on the floor. In the panel where Misono puts her hands on Kaoru, Kaoru basically looks like a girl being sexually assaulted; very different from the typical fetishistic fantasy about lesbians secretly thirsting for men (and Misono could be just bi, for all that we know). If any character is under a fetishistic gaze in this scene, it's Kaoru.

I'm a transbian (albeit an ace one) and give this manga my personal seal of approval.

Now I'm going to close the tab, because this is shaping up to be another series I read but do not engage with other readers at all. Going to invoke the old wisdom: Haters gonna hate.
