Sometimes it really doesn’t become fully yuri according to Dynasty’s (comprehensive and to my mind quite appropriate) definition, like in A Tropical Fish Yearns For Snow.

Not Yuri

Even in English, the terminology isn't all that consistent. In the heyday of the Shoujo-ai Archive, for instance,"yuri" was considered only applicable to works that included sexual content.

I love it!

If I remember correctly, the author didn't want to make a "yuri" per se, but a "girl's love" because she feels the term yuri implies something different from what she's trying to convey. So like, it's still gonna be gay asf, but it just won't be "yuri".

To those who has the physical copy, are there any infos on mitsuki's patents or aya's dad??

Nothing more about either of their parents. There was a clear answer about why Mitsuki had such a strong reaction to Aya getting even slightly bullied by her friends after being associated with her.

tl;dr just bc smth isn't "yuri" doesn't mean it can't be (explicitly) gay

I go way back to the late nineties and I've always sorta kept the old '' Shoujo/Shonen ai = undertones, some light skinship Yuri/Yaoi = actual physical stuff happening''. It's not that clear definite anymore, but I still have that distinction kinda hardwired in me :P

I'll give you the entire rundown, but I'd still suggest just waiting for a scan to show up. But if you still want it...

When she was little she knew she was different and that there was pressure to conform, but at first it was just her only friend telling her she'd look cute in a skirt and wanting her to get one. She laughed it off and said the skirt would look better on her friend than her. Mitsuki was already listening to Gorillaz and dressing like 1990s Seattle. Despite being aware they were different from each other she liked her friend and they got along. Even back then Mitsuki was charming and fine with doing her own thing and she was happy with her friend as things were.

Then she and her friend got peer pressure bullied at school by the cool kids group on the same skirt topic (they were both wearing pants or shorts instead of a skirts) so her friend, while feeling conflicted getting dressed the next morning, conformed to avoid sticking out. She had tried to encourage Mitsuki to do that as well, but Mitsuki showed up the next day still as her authentic herself. Which clearly troubled her friend who seems to have a tad more social awareness than Mitsuki, but nothing happened as a result for several days so maybe it wasn't a big deal in the end.

Unfortunately the consequences came later when her friend heard the bullies badmouthing Mitsuki so defended for her only to get retaliated on much worse. Mitsuki walked into the aftermath of it, and instead of this bringing them closer together her friend was very upset at her. She couldn't understand why Mitsuki wouldn't just conform even for that one day and had a meltdown and cried at her while Mitsuki stood stunned. Her friend ran off and she just stood there and let her go. That seemed to break Mitsuki. It was a trauma event for her. Feeling that emotional outburst, finding out it was because her friend tried to defend her, realizing (in her mind) how much she could hurt someone she likes by something as unchangeable as just being herself. She told herself letting her friend go was for the best. She wasn't just going through life with a different rhythm than others she fell completely out of sync with the world. She shut down emotionally at school and was totally alone for years. Until we see her notice Aya in class, just prior to the start of the series, sitting next to her and literally leaking sound into Mitsuki's cut off world via her loud headphones.

Thanks, @Cranscape. I hope we'll get to see these chapters soon. I'm considering buying the kindle (digital) version since I can't import, I wonder if it has these chapters.

But I don't have the physical books.

I still waiting for all the products to arrive in Buyee but I dont have a scanner since years....Since I will have probably two copies of the manga and one I could stretch it (I'm an obsessive with book integrity hahaha). But that's it, the only scanner I have my cellphone and is a really old one, and so the camera

Edit: I write this, so until I have them, if no one could scan them, I dont know, I can try with the camera but no promises honestly

Looks like the book is already getting a reprint. Sounds like a good problem to have!

Oh god. All this sudden talk about the author saying this isn't going to be yuri has reawakened memories of the "Budokan" dumpster fire.

If the problem is between shoujo ai and yuri (for whatever reason being assumed to mean pornographic), then for me the situation is rather cut and dry. The shoujo ai tag is as rife with abuse as the souls tag is on Steam. In many of the cases of shoujo ai tagged manga I've read most, if not all, of them have been serious cases of bait and switch and you could go through them with without ever seeing a single confession, romantic date, or actual kiss (we're talking on the lips, no quick peck on the cheek or forhead). In a lot of cases, the characters don't end up together but end with being "just very close friends", if sometimes even that. I wouldn't trust a shoujo ai tag one bit.

Yuri however is very specific on what your going to get: a light, fluffy, "moe as f" romance with hand holding, kissing, and if your really lucky, maybe even a kabedon. I think if someone's going into yuri expecting graphic porn/50 shades nonsense then they're not checking the right websites for their manga.

Yuri delivers, shoujo-ai is about as reliable as calling Romance of the Three Kingdoms a BL novel.

That said, if this does turn into a total bait and switch, I will be sorely disappointed. Especially after how obvious the author has gone to make them clearly be romantically attracted to each other.

That all being said, I really hope someone has the wherewithal to get this book licensed in the US.

I don't think we should worry. The pre-chapters arts, and the ones that gave us a glimpse into the future + the author's other projects are indications enough that this is a real shoujou ai. Otherwise, Narita would riot first lol.
