Embezzlement is not a capital offense in most (any?) state, it's usually imprisonment. Also, capital punishment is only legal in half the states.

I don't know where they got that information from or just something they pulled out of their butt (tell us the state at least). Very weird response from them regardless.

Even when Masturi was having a breakdown in front of running tap, they took the time to shut it; before giving her a supportive hug.
(Yes, I was actively looking out for that. Yes, the running tap would have bothered me otherwise. Yes, I am the problem)

"If we cut ties now, at least on paper, it will probably lessen the impact on Koyomi's future. More than anything, I think it would be pitiful if this child had to carry the label of 'a criminal's daughter' for the rest of her life because of her mother."
Yes, I'm sure that's what he's really concerned about. And the more I think about it, the more I'm surprised that Matsuri didn't expect what eventually happened. I'm glad she had a realisation upon seeing the empty house at least. (Thanks a bunch for translating this.)

Is it really "willingly" when she was manipulated by him? He was about to put them into an even more dangerous situation, pretty much cornering Matsuri. Her and Koyomi are both the victims here—he literally targeted a vulnerability (her love for her daughter AND him) so he could get out of the pit he dug himself and push all the blame on her, all while acting like he actually cared.

She could leave him and seek help; instead she went and committed a crime while he had his handss clean and now while she's in prison she left her daughter with a man who can easily sell her organs to pay his gambling debts.
Women who enable their scum husbands are to blame too.

what a fuckin wretched mentality you have

"Having a criminal in the family" is actually serious business in Asia and in Japan in particular.

In countless manga I've read, the crimes of the parents always taint the child in the eyes of society. Lots of people believe that crime "is in the blood" and children of "criminals" (as long as you made some time, you're a criminal) are often ostracized and believed to eventually turn into criminals too.

So, while the husband is obviously scum, it makes sense that Matsuri would agree to the divorce for the sake of Koyomi. He manipulates her with a reasonable argument.

Same thing for the mother-in-law. Since she has only her son's version, of course she believes Matsuri is a criminal and of course, she doesn't want her around because reputation and face is everything in Asian societies.

The husband worked at the bank too and was her senior, if Matsuri had been thinking clearly the hairbrained scheme would have been more likely to work if it was him doing the stealing, no?

As others have alluded to he might have gotten bored of her / was cheating on her and devised a way to kill two birds with one stone (assuming the gambling debt was even real)

Poor Matsuri, she needed to divorce him and leave with her child right away.

The night and day difference of Ren from the start of this manga is already crazy. Look how happy she is now compared to basically wanting to die and looking like a zombie in the first chapter.

Also Matsuri totes starting to fall after seeing how Ren got so excited for seeing that firework go off.

Yeah, it's so good to see it!

"Het, Non-science babies, Tragedy, Suicide" — that's what I look for in Warhammer 40k novels, and they're never as dark and violent as I'd like, but when it comes to yuri, it's almost always a damn drama, extremely dark and accompanied by het, which is something I absolutely want to avoid in yuri! I wish 40k universe was at least a quarter as depressing as 95% of yuri manga. Are the Japanese really that depressing? Why can't they write good yuri without all that drama and het?!

Yes! The way they've worked through issues together has been really nice to see.

Manga, especially yuri, is drowning in nothing but wish fulfillment series. There's an endless number of yuri whose biggest drama is miscommunication in high school.

Really cute chapter, though I still can't help but worry for the future and money and stuff.

Unrelated but did anyone else think that the undershirt that Matsuri mentioned is probably some kind of compression shirt or binder?
