single (malfunctioning) brain cell betwen the whole cast
No, serioulsy. The whole cast is descending into madness. Damn, I'm out of popcorn. Gotta make more for next chapter....

It's really just Niji. Azuki and Meguru show clear signs of being on the road to recovery, and Remu has consistently been remarkably mentally healthy...period, honestly, but especially for her age with such a severe trauma.

I knew it was going to be like this
Next chapter can be Remu-Azuki or Meguru-Azuki

Remu really is the MVP here. Her support has lifted Azuki up, and been a great test-case for opening up Meguru's world view; meanwhile Azuki's support in return meant she didn't feel alone when Meguru confronted her and kept firm. In a positive snowball effect, the outcome of that confrontation meant she felt secure in facing Niji and straightening things out there. I don't think anyone would call her wrong to cut Niji out of her life after the blackmail and forced kiss, never mind the decision when told to accept what Remu is saying or keep dwelling on the shit she knows she made up. But I think she's empathetic enough that she knows there must be a reason she's acting this way, and maybe her own trauma means she very much does not want to be the person calling another disgusting and writing them off.

Niji's tears at the end might imply she's finally, finally beginning to realize what she's been doing is messed up actually. An impressive feat considering all the ranks she has in cognitive dissonance; imagine trying to win an argument by showing positive comments on the real person fiction you wrote about you and your friend. And then doubling down and pointing to scenes you made up completely, as if literally putting words in her mouth wouldn't somehow skew things the way you wanted to see them.

Niji can't be fixed (not with 1 chapter left in a way that feels reasonable, anyway :P)

I really like how Niji felt warm after Remu confessed her own “fetish” and talked to her via her phone and writing website. It’s rather interesting how she only really “listens” through her phone and specifically her story, and Remu still reached out to her though this method which is surely her biggest source of encouragement in her stupid life.

At this point her phone feels like her “vessel” for a life better than this one, and a pretend shell for the Remu she wishes for.
We already knew how disillusioned she was, but it’s fascinating how one small figure can make her tell the difference between fiction and reality.

And I can tell that they’re not beyond saving because they stopped before things could escalate any further. Niji didn’t continue forcing her, and Remu didn’t break her phone on the spot, so that’s a really good outcome considering the situation!

Thanks for the translation, and looking forward to the next chapter!

I find it a bit strange that Remu never tried to find her doll online. It was probably not a super cheap off-brand one.

I'm honestly surprised if Remu forgives Niji, at least this soon, but that would feel like how Usui Shio writes. The confrontation i predicted was a lot worse so I'm glad things didn't go bad.

Of all the terrible things Niji did, i still feel bad for her somehow. Completely unhinged to tell a story you made up abouts someone to their face like it's real and evidence. She does feel close to starting to heal/come back to reality. But irl it would be absolutely reasonable for Remu to never talk to her again. Weird or morally grey things happening in fiction are on a completely scale than real life.

Yes Niji gets what she deserves let’s go

Though it seems she might get sort of a redemption chapter..? I hope it just doesn’t take up all of next chapter

There we go, Niji has been shown the truth and instead she chose to retreat into her fantasies. Although looks like there is still a way out offered for her in the end, even if she needs to accept that they can only be friends in reality.

Remu, teary-eyed, whispering to herself: "Someone understands me! I'm not that weird after all..."

Literally everyone else on the planet and also past the fourth wall: "No, you're pretty fucking weird"

Niji is a monster.

Like, I mean in the narrative sense. She is not an antagonist (who is definied as opposition to the protagonist) but nonetheless adversarial and destructive. This may not be a horror story, but she fits the role and she makes my skin crawl. And I'm here for it.

Looks like Niji decided to make to make that "sexual assaulter who thinks their victim secretly wants it" comparison from me literally true.

I'm pretty sure Niji will take the way out. I'm also pretty sure it will not be satisfying within the span of one chapter, especially given most of it will need to be Meguru/Azuki and Remu/Azuki.

I continue to believe the author is writing the arcs as planned, but speed running them to the point of confusion in order to get the story over with.

I really love how Remu responded here. Like fundamentally this story is about girls with different kinds of wants that are “disgusting” in different ways, and about seeing through what may seem repulsive on the surface to what’s going on inside. It’s about learning to think past your disgust. And critically, this extends to all 4 of the main cast members. Not just the sexual disgust of the main two, but the moral disgust of the girls we could call antagonists. There’s this ugly desire in us to want to see these people punished for doing wrong by the main pair, and the manga is asking us to take that same measured generosity to them as well. We’re not expected to just let it slide—in both cases, we see very clearly how the things they do are wrong, and the most heroic moments of the story are the main characters defending their space, setting boundaries, and critiquing that behavior—but it also doesn’t settle for the self-indulgent route of emotional vigilantism, of punishing what one receives as wickedness, but is in fact disfunction. Instead we are shown that these people have disgusting impulses inside them that come from very understandable places, that hurt them as they hurt others, and that that is a very human thing that doesn’t discount their humanity, or make them unworthy of love. In a society preoccupied with cutting away impurity, it’s a profound and deeply important act of compassion to accept the ugly and diffcult parts of oneself and of others. And that’s the virtue that Remu is displaying here: whether or not Niji can successfully take the hand that is being offered is up to her. It’s really beautiful.

17 chapters onward, I still do not understand what so disgusting about female figurines. All those model builders also build female figurines or magical girls or super heroines. Even I own a few Five Star Stories fatima figurines (pre-built). I never think of them as disgusting, or my collection is disgusting. I certainly did not fall in love with these figurines. They are just art.

Yes! you worded it so well. This is what I tried to say in my previous comments but I'm stupid and english is difficult lol (I also clicked Edit instead of Quote)

But I think this is what this manga is all about, that is why Remu reaction makes a lot of sense, she and Azuki are similar, their desire to connect without judging is what makes this manga that is about being gross-weird to society so good, they don't try to stop being weird and even less do they try to judge others. Everyone could end up like Niji, people like Remu and Azuki are what make you feel happy and not isolate yourself.

It's the fact that Remu gets off on figurines that is "disgusting". She's a doll-licker.
