But it will be interesting to see what might be done with the most distinctive feature of "The Green Yuri"--I have never thought the story would benefit from either full-color or standard B&W. And the trademark treatment of oblique framing and the dense layering of dialogue and figurative elements in the panels have kept me coming back and re-reading this one over and over (it's not uncommon for me to re-read favorite yuri manga, but not often just to look closely at the details of the panels). I like that the pictures don't move in this one, because that means I can spend as much time with them as I want.

Maybe they'll just do it like the Sin City movie, and do it in black and white and green.

While I don't doubt they'll do some creative color work (green yuri is part of the identity of the comic, I am sure the anime will make liberal use of green shades) I doubt it'll just be black and white and green. That's a tough sell and it isn't really necessary. It's not like western comics where being black and white is unusual, therefore you have to adapt Sin City in black & white to match. ALL manga is black and white, so it's standard to add color to anime adaptations.

I'm more curious how they're going to structure the story. is it still going to be short vignettes? Are they going to add connective tissue? I mean, I'm gonna be honest, I love this series, but the structure of the chapters is definitely born from the format, and even translating that into book form made it read a little weird. I would not be surprised if readers who first discover it as a book don't read it and wonder if there are pages missing.

You could consider adapting it as a collection of shorts, if you wanted to keep the structure the same, but if they're making it into episodes, I feel like it'd be pretty stilted without more connective tissue.

It wouldn't surprise me if they just "normalized" the color scheme, perhaps going with either City-like clear lines or a watercolor scheme. Maybe they can license a lot of Green Day songs to compensate.

"It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" is a hilarious song to play during a graduation. Joe is adorable.

I'm so glad this is her first introduction to Joe; the man has so many facets that it's probably very easy to see him as a undesirable rebel, particularly when it comes to the homogeneity of Japanese culture. To see him, instead, as the weepy guardian who misplaced his tissues means her first impression of the man is one who loves deeply, and well... that's where Joe does his best work.

  1. My hot take: You know how people say "If you wanna see what your girlfriend is going to look like as she ages, check out her mom?" I will go on record saying Mitsuki has nothing to worry about - Aya is going to still be a middle-aged babe. :3

  2. I dunno why so many people are doomposting; yes, graduating high school represents an ending of an arc/time period, but the only reason that's the end of a lot of manga is convention. If the years beyond high school represented a completely dry well for storytelling you'd be missing out on like 95% of all entertainment, comics or otherwise.

  3. I'm in the camp that thinks if they get the music licensing right, anime will be the ur-expression of this manga. I'm trusting Arai-sensei to drive this creatively and make the anime distinctive, unique, and artistic. There's no reason to expect a cheap cash-in and she should keep this story going as long as she is still loving the characters and world she's built.

  4. Least realistic thing about this - Aya's mom not realizing the second she sat next to him that the pierced, tattooed rocker guy in the snazzy suit who looks just like Mitsuki is in fact Mitsuki's relative. XD

Or him realizing that she was likely Aya's mom.

Are you kidding? Two people at the graduation who each say, “My kid just got a girlfriend, and they look so happy together listening to Western rock music”?

I meant him not realizing, as a parallel to Aya's mom not realizing above.

Ah, I see. The crucial missing "not."

Literally the only thing they could possibly do that would disappoint me in terms of art direction would be to cut the music references out of the series. It desperately needs to have a licensed soundtrack.

Honestly if it wasn't for the bawling, she and everybody else probably would have been too terrified of him to even notice who he looks like. He definitely has Yakuza vibes going in that suit.

Surely this should not be a problem, seeing how they've already released a soundtrack for the manga.

You wouldn't think, but licensing for use in an actual show might be a different matter than licensing what is effectively a compilation album.

(Edit: I mean I'm not expecting it to be a problem, it's just not entirely out of the realm of possibility)

Missed opportunity to have Joe show up to the ceremony clean shaven for maximum family resemblance. Embrace the confusion.
