I think Aya just wants to fit in with Mitsuki's family and future and she's decided all on her own that she MUST learn English to do that. She wants to understand the lyrics. She picked English as her focus for university. The three people she really likes all can do it. This might be the first time she was trying for something she wants that much. It doesn't seem like they know exactly how bad she's feeling about it because she is having fun with Mitsuki otherwise.

It looks like Mitsuki is currently happy in the moment and thinking everything is great while Aya wants to be happy, but is mentally stuck in plans/scenarios as she's done in past chapters. Before she was focused on ways Mitsuki could stay with her and now that Mitsuki seems to be in a good place, cooler than ever even, she's decided she has to do this to stay with her because that's how she's wired to be.

Yeah. I mean, Joe is definitely moving to America at some point, she's probably assuming Mitsuki will go with him, and she feels like she has to be able to thrive there herself in order to stay with her. And for a girl her age, who has probably kind of undervalued academic studies up until this point, that's a lot of worry and stress to put on yourself.

As for Aya's mum, Chapter 124: Direct Hit suggests that even if it's not been explicitly stated it's strongly suspected.
On the last panel of the first page Aiko thinks "Are they truly dating?", then on the first panel of the second page she thinks "They're totally dating".

Awwwww that mannaresim when you're getting anxious. I hope Mitsuki will notice those poor nails and give Aya the assurance and love that will comfort her shooing her demons away.

I super love this story and I have been following it since the very beginning, buying the books in physical and all. But I am super bothered by the nail thing it's awful to see...a really awful trigger.

...I kinda hope this leads to her helping Aya trim her nails for the symbolism of it.

Maybe because Aya has been the one to reach out and help Mitsuki all this time, but seeing her weak and self harming and hiding is doing a number on me, so this chapter made me cry. My poor baby, Aya. She deserves all the love in the world!

They're 100% going to have that conversation IMO and Mitsuki will tell her exactly that. Being strong is fine and all, but she's not alone in this now.

I don't think there will be any fleshed out 'becoming distant' plot, rather Mitsuki taking notice of Aya's newfound nervousness and assuring her

Oof. I can definitely relate to feeling anxious/needing support, but also being too embarrassed to ask for it, even if you know the people you would ask would be happy to help and trying to just grit your teeth and power through will only make things worse.

I definitely didn't just do that exact same thing while getting ready to move.
