I'm amazed this work has gotten as far as it has under the CCP which jails LGBT authors on the regular, it might actually have something to do with the Lin's mother not being vilified and tossed to the curb like many western stories would depict. Social Harmony and all that.
Huh, the majority of the world doesn't live in a society where you can be openly LGBTQ without extreme consequences.
Contrary to the belief here, no, CCP doesn't jail LGBT authors on regular just for writing gay stuff.
The ones you usually heard about being jailed are usually being jailed for two main reasons, either illegally publishing books/comics or illegally distrubuting sexual content. The issue if of course law like this will disproportionately target LGBT authors more, because it is a lot harder for them to publish. The same for sex stuff, the tolerance for LGBT story is lower since you have the "gay stuff" on top of the hardcore porn. But if is just porn I believe even recently a few straight hentai artists also got the hammer too.
However, if the authors choose to write/publish LGBT stories on the big publisher sites and commission from there instead of self publish then they won't face any legal issues at all. Of course for these publishers these stories will have be quite censored and kept vanilla enough. All the NSFW stuff or uncensored stuff will just be published on the authors' personal blogs instead and kept "unofficial".
The Chinese government and society both discriminate against LGBT heavily, but since there is still a lot of money to be made from gay content they have chosen to keep an open market for it where they can keep their eyes on. Money talks.

Rest omitted
Yeah, a quick google search will show how that statement isn't really true, you do make a good point that the CCP doesn't say "It's illegal to be gay" but they (The CCP) have a literal taskforce which has one job: Hunt gays who get too popular or step too close to the line. Now I will grant you that lesbians are generally hand waved away because "That's hot" and it's usually gay men or what we could call Yaoi writers who are targeted in mainland China.
I feel like I shouldn't have to explain this but just for the sake of clarity, when a society makes nearly everything about being gay illegal and has laws for black-bagging people who disrupt "Social Harmony" or who "Pick Quarrels" and there are obscenity laws on the books.. Yeah.

Plenty of other sources too but I won't spam, Radio Free Asia covers this quite well.

God I lost it for a solid five minutes after the " ̶o̶n̶l̶y̶ ̶s̶e̶c̶o̶n̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶l̶e̶s̶b̶i̶a̶n̶s̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶c̶a̶r̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶a̶b̶o̶u̶t̶ ̶e̶d̶u̶c̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶a̶l̶ ̶a̶t̶t̶a̶i̶n̶m̶e̶n̶t̶". Lu's mom is truly great.
I'm so glad you brought it up. The strike through makes it so much funnier
I completely agree with this, it baffles me how Americans think that they will bring people to like queerness or to be comfortable around queer people when they insult and kick out anyone who says something they remotely don't like, you only give fuel to bigots to talk shit about it, trying to talk to people without being patronizing or insulting seems impossible for the American folk.
Usually they're more concerned with avoiding people they see as intolerant, rather than trying to change what they see as a personality flaw in another person. Things may be different if that intolerant person apologizes and makes the first step in learning more. At least this would make a difference for many, though you won't see them well represented on social media which boosts extreme opinions.
I recently moved to a city where leftists (in the US sense, not like marxists) reign supreme. It's interesting to see the extent people never expect to be talking to, for instance, someone like a Trump voter or a conservative Christian. It's like they see those people as being from a rival nation that seeks to harm them and the people they care about. You would see something similar as you get into more isolated rural places in the US where eg gay or non-christian people are treated with similar suspicion, though it can be hard to distinguish that from regular rural distrust of outsiders, or in conservative subcommunities in southern cities. If the outsider behaves ethically and has a good reputation (eg, engaging in social service for the local community) then that may make a difference for many conservatives, at least on an individual level.
US society is becoming increasingly ideologically delineated like this. When I was a child, the refrain used to be to avoid talking about politics, but now it's to avoid talking to people with the wrong politics. I'm not sure what to do about it. Of course, I don't want the government to jail me either, so I'm also glad there are people who care about what's happening.

In the caae of a Trump voter, the voter literally voted for someone that seeks to harm the leftist city dwellers and the people they care about. That might or might not have been the intention of the vote but it was the predictable effect.
I'm aware and, in fact, the reason I became a city dweller among leftists is largely for my own safety. The state government where I lived was doing scary things; now the national government is too.
I didn't come here to surround myself with people who have the same views, experiences, or understanding as myself, though. I think there's a bridge that needs to be rebuilt, albeit not always short term and on an individual level, but certainly in the long term and on a collective level.

More like being afraid of government broadcasting to Americans being too socialist, it sounds like. Plus earlier fears that the State Department was too Communist.

Edit: It was created during the cold war as a propaganda, President Obama did away with the suppression of all Smith-Mundt act organizations and now (at least in the case of RFA) their mission statement is to provide accurate and timely information, news, and commentary about events in Asia and elsewhere; and
be a forum for a variety of opinions and voices from within Asian nations whose people do not fully enjoy freedom of expression.
You act like the people of China actually have access to RFA, you do know they have an Intranet in the CCP right? Oh and being caught with a VPN lands you in jail.
This might blow your mind but as far as great powers go, the United States is by far the most tolerant, live and let live society that exists. Your ability to criticize it and not be punished is one obvious example.
Does this excuse the bad things the USA has done? No, the USA should strive to do better.

not that americans bragging about how virtuous their country is hasn't always been embarrassing, but carrying on while it proudly backs genocide in Gaza is something else
The talk about the family in queer relationships reminded me of WanMu, a Chinese manga about comphet, family (non)acceptance and of course the lesbian couples.
This is SO cute omg. You know it’s going to be good grounded bdsm when they make a whole thing about not being able to use stuff her mom got her lmao.
The lesbian petplay is going to be SO cute. I’m so so hyped.

Uyghurs are already gone and the world stood by and watched, I know it's cool to rip into the US and stay safely in the "America bad" slough and pretend to be above it all, you do you.
This has gone far past the scope of what I was originally talking about so I think I will withdraw from the ongoing conversation.
As always thank you to the scanlation team!

The political discussion ends now. Most folks here would like to discuss this series specifically, and heated political debate - of only tertiary relevance, at best - is a good way to prevent them from doing so.
