Great series. Saori and Shizuku are my favorite.

Though it's kinda hard to reconcile Shizuku and Minami's past childhood abuse with the "playful" violence dished out by their partners.

Minami is 18 since the start. I guess that didn't change (no indication how much time passed since then). She's currently studying to be a Chef.

My first thought is the author forgot she made Minami that young, but I think that's unlikely since that was a major point in the first couple of chapters.

Maybe around a year has passed since the first chapter and Minami's 19 now and Shizuku's 17? That's probably the minimum age gap for it to make sense how Iori is giving Minami shit over this.

Man, when I first read this I thought the manga was okay at best, but Saori and Shizuku's dynamic really does it for me. There's not much else out there like them.

I'll be shocked if this goes into kinky territory. But it will increase the antics that both couples get up to and cause us to lose even further interest in the other 2 couples because these 4 are so much more interesting.

It's a bit unclear whether she just told her mother that she'll never be married nor have a conventional family, or whether she told her she's gay. At dinner, she only mentioned that they're living together. Considering the mom's response, it seems like she thinks they're "roommates," ("oh she's not shacking up").

It seemed to me like Shinohara did a soft coming out, to test the waters. Makes it all the harder to see that response from the mom.

Like her mother could have misinterpreted Heke as a roommate, but it feels like it was phrased in such a way to give her mother a way out if she didn't want to accept Shinohara. Shinohara is not normally a direct communicator. Her mother also was keen enough to notices the changes with Shinohara and assumed she had a lover.
In any case, ouch.

This is a continuation of the main series timeline. The events of the "main" series come before the events of this one. In other words, only reading this version is like skipping to the 3rd novel of a series. So I'd say to read both.

Yeah it's confusing that this is called just "side stories" even though it's the sequel series. Some publication shenanigans responsible for that?

The first chapters will feel less polished after reading these more recent chapters but it still has some good stuff in it.

From my understanding, it's related to a change in publication that happened mid-series and how that new publication decided to handle the continuation of the series. It's not really a sequel series, just a direct continuation but on a new publication website. The "side stories" naming isn't official, I don't think. It's all corrected in the volume releases. This stuff is basically volume 5 onwards (chapter 94 onwards). So the story really has 139+ chapters.

Right, because it's a continuation and still just the main story but on a new website. Correct me if I'm wrong but these aren't called "side stories" by any publication, I think that was just a translation decision made years ago. So, I'd not worry about that naming too much, as long as people understand there's 93 chapters before these ones. Either way it's just great the series continues.

Heke and Shinohara are my favorite couple of this series, they compliment each other so well.

Well it looks like the mom is accepting of them. But there were still a couple of times where I wondered if she truly understands that they are lovers.
