^I must not have got far enough into the novels. The volumes I read had her never showing anything close to sexual desire and she would always view any sex-related topics through a very clinical lens.

Maomao comes off as more Ace than anything from what I remember reading in the LNs. I'm quite behind on them though and no clue where the anime is at.

I never understood what the point of having a side character develop feelings for the main character for it to go nowhere because the main couples will end up together. Is it for the side characters growth? But shouldn't growth be directed to the main character because we don't get much panel time and monologue from side characters? It only makes sense if the main characters don't end up together...it's such a shitty plot device to keep the reader in suspense of whether the main characters will choose eachother or not. Maybe I'm over reacting but it leaves a bad taste in me.

I think the crush this is just the result of the dynamic the author was looking for with these interactions. The author probably wanted a "friend character" for the Meguru to bounce her feelings off of while away from Kasane, but she wanted the "friend character" to be more "frenemies" than friends.
This girl liking Meguru is simply the explanation for why she sticks around and always needles Meguru despite them not actually being friends.
