While this cute and all I generally scoff at anything involving middle school love and wish the adults would give better advice
"Better advice" is really subjective here, I think they did a perfectly good job handling a perfectly realistic situation.
Middle schoolers can absolutely start thinking and feeling in love in the way that's shown here, the beginnings of romantic attachments are not the same thing as sexual desires and certainly doesn't require it as a necessity.
That being said, they're definitely old enough to have potentially started puberty (middle school makes them somewhere between 11 and 13), so inclinations of sexual attraction isn't unbelievable either.
