I think I'm slowly coming to agree with Blastaar's hypothesis.

For the record, I'm 100% with White Rose's hypothesis.

To wit: that these two have been lovers since the moment Kasumi agreed to share a bed with Sakurako (that is, chapter one) and that their relationship is fucking blatantly obvious to the Japanese fans.

The two theories aren't mutually exclusive--I think that the WR theory is essentially correct (for whatever value of 'lovers' anyone wants to assign). But Blax said it quite well:

especially with the author introducing more 'classic' couple who make all the doubter go "Why aren't the MC like that" when the characters are all like "I wish we were like them"

So my hypothesis is that the author's not trolling "us," the believers, but the "on-panel penetrative sex or it's not yuri" crowd.

Okey Kasumi is definitely madly in love with Sakurako when she has to turn around because her smile was to bright for her xD she got so happy!(⁎⁍̴̆Ɛ⁍̴̆⁎)

That's another example of how overall context is so important--like, given the whole mass of stuff we know about the character, the fact that Kasumi had a rationalization to NOT do something (get Saku a White Day present), but then decided to take the trouble to do it, rather than the other way around, is enormous.

Then add in the fact that Kasumi, who was defined by not caring about much of anything regarding other people, decides she wants to do things for others because of her girlfriend's example--that's practically a religious conversion experience.

At the very least I think it's clear that the preposterous premise being floated some time ago that "Kasumi doesn't really feel affection for Sakurako but just exploits her because Kasumi is lazy and a glutton who just likes to be fed and waited on" has taken a couple of torpedoes amidships with the last two chapters.

I feel like that one hit the bottom of the ocean awhile ago, honestly.

Nah, while most of the fleet has been sunk, a number of submarines managed to evade our destroyers' depth charges.

I liked that part so much! (ᗒ‿‿ᗕ) Kasumi is lazy to a ludicrous point. I mean, sometimes she swallows her food whole because she doesn't want to get tired from the chewing effort! You can't get much lazier than that. And buying a present is a big hassle, and Sakurako wouldn't mind at all if Kasumi doesn't get her anything, so why bother?

And the answer is: because, as a hip hop singer would say, she feels the love. (♡ω♡)

I think that, if you went to Japan and said that American readers claim there's no conclusive evidence that the two MCs are lovers, you'd get some really funny looks.

The "Yes, yes, Americans are crazy. I mean, look at how they're handling Corona-chan! There's no doubt, they're bonkers!" kind of looks.

But that's just my humble opinion, of course.

Wait does anybody actually call it Corona-chan there or is that part of the joke. XD

I read that hypothesis a while ago so perhaps it's been updated, but I also agree. That whatever their relationship status is explicitly, they are clearly meant to be in love. And perhaps the form of their love also looks different from how it is conventionally presented.

Since this manga (as far as I can tell) is in real time (the last chapter was a February in a leap year and this chapter was March, so it presumably takes place in 2020), I wonder if the April chapter will have anything to do with the whole global lockdown thing. Of course, the manga doesn't necessarily take place in our universe, so the author doesn't have to incorporate it if they don't want to (I imagine they have chapters more or less planned out in advance), but it would be interesting to see.

In Japan, they really call it Corona-chan. :-) That's Japan for you, they like to make everything cute. I wouldn't be surprised if one of these days the otaku community turned Corona-chan into a moeblob girl character who is just misunderstood.

It is just as you say. The story timeline follows exactly our real time. One month in real time is one month in the manga, and one year in real time is one year in the manga.

Imagine if Japan went into an European-style lockdown. A strict “shelter in place” policy.

Kasumi and Sakurako would have to stay at home, just the two of them, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Can you picture it? Our girls, all alone in a small apartment, with nothing to do but enjoy each other's company, for Heaven knows how long?

That would be the end of Sakurako. I don't think her heart could take it.

(Oh, but she would probably die happy... XD )

"We're not exactly dating."

The trolling is strong in this one.

A: "Because they're still not doing it!"

B: "Because they're practically married!"

Haven't they made it obvious by now that the reason they aren't "dating" is because they don't feel a need to define their relationship in that way? It's not that they don't love each other, because they do. It's that their relationship simply IS, without needing or wanting to put labels on it.

Yeah it's pretty obvious, and it's pretty interesting that Moka want that kind of relationship without label too.

I think the relationship they have is the best one. They're basically life partners. Putting a label on their relationship will bring in expectations and expectations can be brutal. What they have now is just them having each other as a home.

We did get "partner who's something like my girlfriend, my pet cat..." https://dynasty-scans.com/chapters/a_room_for_two_ch53#5 Followed by grumpiness about labels.

That's also the chapter that had Kasumi spontaneously kissing Sakurako on the lips when she got home.
