Despite my unwavering conviction that cis dudes should be allowed to be as cute as they want to be, this really has strong trans girl vibes lol

Homaru appears to be trained martial artist, like on a professional bodyguard level: this is a very difficult maneuver that requires a lot of hand-eye coordination.

Surprise bag inspection??? Forgive my ignorance but is that an actual thing? I've seen teachers confiscate items but only if the student was actively disrupting class with it. Where i grew up, a teacher pulling this would get in trouble with parents.

can we get a tag that is like hetquestionmark or something? i feel like we have enough series that don't really fit into the binary

I am a little curious as I am not an english speaker but cringe has even become regular slang in my language (very specific and useful term), but if it’s ok to ask what word was originally used in jp?

I love the artstyle! Idk how old the one-shot is but It has the vibes to be picked to become a series! I also love to see a Real Gyaru and not “gyaru mind” type of gal

So cute!
Gender works a bit different depending on culture. Homare would probably be most comfortable with GNC demiboy if introduced to Eurosphere gender theory. The snaggletooth, the emo cutie perm, the crossdressing, and the mole on one character is too much moe packed into one kid though what the hell. If I was born a boy would I be like that?

but if it’s ok to ask what word was originally used in jp?

almost certainly キモッ, the maji yabai egui but even more abbreviated version of kimochi warui

There's a lot of really big assumptions in this statement that aren't really be supported by the text. I don't think it's worthwhile to argue if a character is trans in this or that way or a crossdressing guy, especially when there's just not enough material to really get that specific. But if we're really just talking probabilistically, there's far fewer gnc demiboys like this in the North American gender context than trans women. There's more gnc guys like this that aren't demiboys tbh. Significantly though, these things are fluid and we can't say what Homare would be drawn to in one moment of the story would be what they want later on.

Missing the trans tag

Submit a tag request if that's all you have to say (button right next to the forum under the title).
I agree though, both crossdressing and trans tags so it's findable by either. If the one-shot turned into a series and it was resolved one way or the other then that might change it, but crossdressing at least on this chapter since that's what's depicted (the characters are thinking about it as such).

Is he a cross dresser or is he trans? Why'd she refer to him as a she?

Crossdressing ≠ Trans

I'm leaning towards him just being a cross dresser cuz I thought being trans was about wanting to be the opposite gender, not just wanting to be cute/handsome or having a strong fondness for cute/handsome things/aesthetics?

That aside, this feels look a Ch 1 rather than a one shot? How does a manga get serialized anyways? Do they have to post the chapter somewhere specific and wait or do they submit their chapter/apply for the chance to have their work serialized?

lots of people start experimenting with their gender by altering the form rather than doing some sort of wild internal gender cultivation, and lots of people start out just crossdressing before they go "yeah I think I'm just this gender actually"
It can just be relatable/nostalgic to fully binary trans people, even if it's not the intent. It's like how Dorothea Arnault is canonically bisexual but I swear to sothis she's lesbian coded af

Authors do oneshots in magazines they work with all the time or they can submit to contests. From this pool, publishers choose to pick series up. That's the usual flow, but with webmanga and international collab work, it's shifting

Seconding this. Femboys are 100% valid, but... definitely getting trans vibes. The tears of happiness after looking in the mirror post-makeover is just... I've felt that.

quickly accruing a small fortune by having a penny every time a manga has a character that is a trans woman in all but name

Is he a cross dresser or is he trans? Why'd she refer to him as a she?

Due to the way Japanese works, it doesnt really have gendered pronouns like English does. So when it comes to translations that tackle gender, its kind of an additional thing to articulate on beyond the text. I assume the translator was just getting trans energy, or felt she/her would feel better there.

I kinda like how open ended it is tbh. Entirely up to interpretation.

I really wanna see more of this btw, it was so good. Wanting to be cute has nothing to do with gender!!!

I interpreted it as her getting heated and emotional and not really thinking about what she was saying.

I don't know too much about Japanese language quirks around gender, so I can't speak on that part.

Also, I neeeed this to get a full series... or at least a few more chapters.

Yeah that was my impression. Most cis guys don’t cry tears of joy at the sight of themselves as a girl, but (from first-hand experience) that is definitely a relatable feeling as a trans woman (back when my egg cracked many years ago)

Really good one shot, thanks for the TL!

ULTIMATE MANGAKA CHALLENGE: WRITE A GNC MALE CHARACTER THAT DOESN'T READ AS A CLOSETED TRANS GIRL (GONE WRONG) (VERY HARD)

Wow. This really reminded me of A Cute Guy to the point where I had to double check the author. Though, looking back, the art and character designs are WAY different, so I'm not sure why it felt so similar (beyond sharing a premise). I think Kaname's design reminds me of a specific character in a similar scenario, but I'm not sure who.

On a completely different note, what was with all the different fonts? Are they a carryover from the original or meant to convey something that was difficult to translate more directly?

This was very cute! I liked the way the progression moved and they are really sweet together, and a lot of the emotional hits were done beautifully. It was certainly personally relatable in many ways. I'd love to see a full series about these two.

I'm not quite sure how tagging works (edit: figured it out! thanks. I'll leave this here for others to see if they may share my views or disagree), but I personally propose the "Girly Debut Protocol" for a work like this:

  • Keep the "Cross-dressing" tag
  • Add the "Transgender" tag
  • Add the recently-minted "Ambiguous gender" tag (https://dynasty-scans.com/tags/ambiguous_gender)
  • Add the "Romance" tag
  • Either: Remove the "Het" tag altogether (my strong preference, like Girly Debut. You can also make arguments for why a relationship between these two characters isn't really seen as Het in society anyway), or (more controversially, and I prefer the former option, but I can see the argument for this so I'll suggest it) add both the "Het" and "Yuri" tags [NOT because a relationship with a trans girl is het or het+yuri, but because this is strictly for search availability purposes for people who may consider this hetgem rather than yurigem. I'd personally prefer if it were just tagged "Yuri", but of course that's just entirely based on my interpretation rather than the text's ambiguity and the searching function of Dynasty].

My reasoning is that tags are fundamentally about searching for works on Dynasty's database itself via the tagging system, and are additive (that is to say, a work will appear for any tag), so for practical purposes, this system should work for people looking for both "Transgender" and "Cross-dressing" (though I agree the character strongly reads as a trans girl) and doesn't pin a sexuality label on their relationship.
