probably the nazism-eugenicist roots of the word "degenerate" and the usage of the word in the last decade (esp among alt right and alt right pipeline propagandists) not being too dissimilar, flanderization notwithstanding. the exaggeration greases the wheels on "there is a lesser, detrimental kind of life/lifestyle that most be destroyed to deliver us from total ruin" that is delineated in the historical, nazi-regime usage.

The general association with nazism which is still extremely prevalent in how it's used today by bigots, a lot of people sling it around without understanding what it actually is and it really isn't great.
Like there's one thing to reclaim a word but "degenerates" is really old and really shitty even if it isn't an outright slur.

Kuzushiro is one of the modern greats of yuri, no one else can hit with the underlying angst followed up with turning on the party lights

First I've heard of this. I only noticed it being used by like twitch streamers calling their chats degenerates or vice versa in a fetish/porn context. Like if someone starts commenting on an Elden Ring character's feet, they get called a degenerate.

Regardless, I don't think we should be deciding whether language is appropriate based on how bigots use it, especially for words that predate said bigots.

It's for sure yuri. After the recent Moon chapters, i have faith in this author now.

We've mentioned it before, but just want to reiterate that we went with the subtext tag because none of Kuzushiro-sensei's ongoing works are labeled by their publishers as yuri, and yes, this does include The Moon on a Rainy Night (yanmaga has the series listed as #school, #drama, #youth and #friendship). Obviously Moon had strong hinting early on that Saki was gay and we got full confirmation at the end of volume 1, but still. We're very cautious and have been waiting for something super concrete before changing the tag, but the hinting has...well, it's hard to call it just hinting atp but we hope you understand.

i mean 'gene' is in the meat of the word. its inherently a word denoting birth / family / reproduction even before it took scientific meaning. regardless i think it is important to note that abstaining from its use isn't ceding the word to bigots, but rather abstaining is refusing the spread of the ideas and beliefs underpinning the words usage by bigots. Yes, even twitch streamers (an alt right pipeline) who use it to describe non normative sexuality are freely doing the work of unsavory folks.

Having faith shouldn't matter. In fact, it can make lot of stuff less enjoyable when you expect something.

Kuzushiro's series persistently feature queer characters, they just might not always be mains and/or be involved in romance. They do like to tease and misdirect, however. Any reader with too eager of a mind will get their brains bullied to oblivion with false signals or misreadings.

As I will not tire to be pedantic about this particular regurgitated piece of nonsense:

The idea of social degeneration predates national socialism by a good two centuries. Nazi Germany used the term "entartet" (better translated as "out of kind"); the German equivalent "degeneriert" did in fact see a sharp decline in usage coinciding with the rise of the NSDAP.

Should you want to be insufferable about dictating prescriptive vocabulary use, at least get your facts right.
