Yuri-trash

Autobiographical

The artist, Yuni, often depicts herself as a tanuki. I’m not quite sure what animal her wife is supposed to be, though. Maybe just a hairball, since she looks a lot like how her messy hair is drawn when she’s drawn as a human?

Title: "Illustrator Yuri"

Notes:
The artist she's pining after is named "Namae Naiko", which literally means "without a name" + "ko", a common suffix for female names.

"if i draw her, she will come, if i draw her, she will come..." is a translation of "kakeba deru", a phrase used by Kantai Collection fans when they post art of characters they're trying to get in gacha rolls.

"now we just need the wedding rings" is a translation of "koko ni kyoukai wo tateyou", literally "let's build a church here", a hashtag that basically means "just get married already".

Also, the fan's tablet appears to be a Huion Kamvas.

Thanks for the work scanlators, but I don't think nobody gonna upset if you drop it.

We talked about dropping it, but for my part I still think it’s looking like it’ll be a nice series with gorgeous art and fun character/outfit designs. Nothing wrong with a good platonic female friendship series every now and then! But a bummer about the misleading expectations to be sure.

Since they’re in a writing circle together, have they ever released any project? I’d love to read it,I bet it would be really well-written! :)

Yes! There's only one work they actually all participated in together [1], which I've been scheming to translate the other 3 untranslated comics from (when I get around to it...). Tamifull's comic for that anthology (the only one translated) was a bit much for me, but the other 3 are a little more toned down and I recall really liking them. I have all the CLRDs done, I just need to actually sit down and do the TL/TS...

Beyond that, Tamifull and Yuni wrote a few Love Live doujins together (also on Dynasty), and even used to share a booth at Comitia! [2] [3]. Meanwhile, Sal Jiang and Kuwabara were more "guest stars" on the toxic yuri anthology that Yuni organized and never actually co-authored any stories as far as I know. Though, I see a Sal Jiang doujin in the second Comitia picture linked below, so maybe she also split the Comitia booth sometimes.

Great reaction. Suika is becoming my fave yuri author.
Also, why is it censored? The original on pixiv isn't, and it's free.

Omg I don’t use pixiv enough, I had no idea it was filtering out a bunch of her comics as “potentially sensitive”. I was using the censored version posted on Twitter for raws and didn’t know about the original. Thank you!

Now I need to go back and see what other stuff pixiv has been silently hiding from me :(

This was super cute and interesting, if only Amazaki Suika made a sequel or a part two (But we all know, given that it's Sukia-sensei, that's never gonna happen.)

She has a number of short Twitter comics that randomly got a sequel comic a year or two later. This one was posted less than a year ago, so it's totally possible :)

I would say the sequel one-shots definitely drive home that point. In one of the other one-shots they are good friends and one even offers relationship advice to the other about another girl.

The series adaptation definitely gets heavier but ultimately still keeps a pretty hopeful outlook on things in the end.

"Office Lady Yuri"
Not yuri

Which is it???

I'm going with the author's intent on this one. It was cute. Another Tamifull post. Keep them coming. With "How Do We Relationship," ending next chapter, I welcome it!

The way I see it, Mr. Cat makes it clear he is male, he just doesn't know what male humans look like so he looks female. Shrugs.

And yes, I'm trying to translate as much of her original Twitter comics as possible these few weeks leading up to the HDWR finale! Still a handful more coming this week.

does that mean we'll get more from that their Pixiv?

Yup, planning to do a mini tmfly translating binge over the next few weeks as her serialization, How Do We Relationship? a.k.a So, Do You Wanna Go Out, Or? approaches its finale.

Although, if you mean these characters specifically, not exactly. The comics are pretty unrelated to each other. A few of her 1-page comics (which I’ll be uploading as images) have characters that look like Mamiya and Kuzawa, but they have different uniforms, so it’s probably just a visual resemblance, since we know from this comic that they didn’t go to middle school together.

This starts with page 5? 5 through 8? Is there something missing? :0

Fixed. It was pages 5-8 of a collection of tmfly’s Twitter comics on her Pixiv that I was working from.

Prequel of https://dynasty-scans.com/chapters/an_undesirable_relationship?

Thanks for pointing this out, I didn’t even think to check! I try not to think about that comic……

Side note, where would I be able to buy “I Love You So Much I Hate You”?

I agree that the title is a bit confusing, I wonder if there's some Japanese pun or idiom we're not getting?

The title (Kinou no Teki wa Kyou mo Teki, “yesterday’s enemy is also today’s enemy”) is a play on the expression Kinou no Teki wa Kyou no Tomo, “yesterday’s enemy is today’s friend”. It means something like, just because you’re at odds with someone today doesn’t mean you won’t be on their side someday. Yuni’s take on this is “sure, redemption arcs are fine, but more often, something giving you trouble today will actually keep giving you trouble the next day”. She likes to use these plays on expressions for titles.

As for how it relates to the story, I have a few ideas—just my own interpretation of the story.

Generally I think the theme is “if you don’t like something, asking you to come to like it might be unfair. Maybe you’re just right, and the best you can do is cope and eventually move on.”

They’re dealing with sexual harassment at work, but this isn’t a story about them addressing it per se. There’s no real confrontation, much less redemption for her boss(?). Instead they just find ways to cope with it because they have each other’s backs.

Throughout their relationship, Onose has never gotten used to Asahina’s smoking. That doesn’t change, but she does finally build up the courage to confront it. But no redemption for that, Asahina just acknowledges that it was never really good for her in the first place.

Onose tends to overcommit herself and be a people-pleaser. She doesn’t like this about herself (hence self-loathing mode). But Asahina doesn’t discourage this or try to change her, instead she supports her as it is—whatever stage of dealing with this Onose is in, Asahina has her back.

Asahina enters her new job thinking she’ll never see the nice lady she met at the info session again, but then turns out to be right with her all along. Pretty low-drama arc (of crush I met briefly) -> (follow after her) -> (relationship). There’s no “friends I made along the way” kind of story. Not so much “enemies” in this case, so maybe this is a stretch.

At the end, Onose has left her job. Maybe this was because of persistent sexual harassment, maybe because she found the culture of picking up other people’s slack too hard to avoid, we don’t know. But switching jobs is much less common in Japan. Reading between the lines, it could just be that she acknowledged that her situation was flawed, and couldn’t fix it, she could only leave it for somewhere better.

Nice! Yuni is making more office lady related works~ ^v^

This doujin is from 2017.

For the record, though, Yuni did just release a new office lady doujin in November 2024, and it's a full 50 pages long. Translation will come at some point :)

well she recently tweeted about her work life and it was like worked ins sales at genreal company after uni - worked in hr - got an MBA - then became a manga artist so she actually has experence in office work

https://x.com/y_un_i/status/1883152151897370913 link to the tweet

Thanks for sharing! Last I heard, I think she's working as a professional illustrator for a company now, and just doing a little manga on the side here and there.

A few weeks after putting this up with the chart and everything, I was cataloguing Amazaki-sensei's Twitter-only comics and discovered that she actually put together her own bios / relationship charts for the characters in this anthology. I've now finally translated it here: https://dynasty-scans.com/images/33432

Comic #2 is a follow-up to A Story About a High School Girl Prince. I think the rest are all standalone, unfortunately.

Unrelated note -- I've now translated everything on Amazaki-sensei's Pixiv that hadn't been translated! To celebrate I put together these based on things I noticed while reading/translating so much of her work:

Common visual themes

It's been a fun couple months. My final tally is 16 comics/chapters by Amazaki Suika translated since the end of November, plus a few images!

I'm going to take a little break from Amazaki Suika for now (other than continuing to work with Oddity Translations on her current series), but at some point will work through her dozen or so remaining Twitter-only comics -- there are some good ones! ♡

there are two other authors in the anthology this is part of, but Amazaki Suika('s work) seems to be the headliner
https://xfolio.jp/en/portfolio/mountgirl/works/380367
still curious what the other chapters are like, but they're all locked behind a paywall

At the time all three authors had mostly just done Twitter comics. As far as I can tell, Amazaki was the only one who had a one-shot in a major publication already (Shade in Summer / Natsukage). She also did the gorgeous cover art for the anthology.

OZ unfortunately hasn’t done much other than this, but is still somewhat active on Twitter.

An Mitsuko has had a couple short serializations through Comic Etoile, which I haven’t read and aren’t translated.

The other two comics were good but maybe not as confident as this one. Amazaki’s art and depth of expression is really excellent, and pacing / atmosphere are expertly handled. The other two lean a bit more melodramatic, though still had some emotional weight. They’re also both more about competition in (het) romantic relationships (i.e. fighting for a man’s affection), which isn’t as interesting to me.

That’s one of my favorite series. I think a few people have put in upload requests, but I’m not sure anyone’s been able to get in touch with zeztie for permission.

The numbering of 0 and 1 suggests there is more of this. Is there more of this? Please tell me there is more of this.

Not that I've come across. It was released at COMITIA 145 in Sept. 2023. As far as I can find, it's the only yuri-adjacent work they've done. Their current (and first) serialization is just shonen fantasy: https://bookwalker.jp/series/482119/list/
