Now, if you think trans lives are just an advanced form of crossdressing then dear god you need to educate yourself. the fact the manga is letting you conflate the two demonstrates it is clearly is laundering transmisogyny under the guise of "we made them sexually appealing though!1!1!1!" it is quite the opposite i think this manga would prefer transgender identity never to exist or be invoked from how it already framed kitano, it would spoil the "joke" that Girly has won their affections, it spoils the fantasy thats laid bare by every boy-in-panty shot in here. The plain reading is they are almost exclusively sexualized either as a joke or purely out of fetishization. There was an immediate crass joke about genitalia being incompatible with womens clothing in the first few pages of this chapter, remember? I'm surprised you forgot!

I'm not conflating transitioning and crossdressing, this series has both and right now it's the crossdresser who's catching flak. Deservedly so, he's ignorant and kind of a jerk, but he's also fifteen years old. Getting mad at him is counterproductive. And trying to extrapolate from this one character to the author's secret agenda is just a failure of media literacy. Because you know what's going to happen next chapter? He's going to learn a lesson and become a little less ignorant.

I don't think there's anyone at all who believes Eru is actually correct with his upskirt inference. So next chapter this other guy is going to get his skirt off and, oh, you actually can wear those panties regardless of your undercarriage. Maybe we'll even get a servicey explanation of tucking. Because that's the level this manga is actually operating at. If it's not covering these topics in the same manner you would, fair enough, but that's really leaning into the narcissism of small differences.

There's plenty of problematic stuff going on here. It sure does have a panty shot of a child right there, doesn't it? Gender identity makes no difference in the ethical calculus of fanservice. And the manga's entire premise of a find-the-vagina comedy is utterly radioactive. If anybody want to nope out on that stuff, I can't blame you. But trying to argue that this obviously pro-trans, thoroughly queer, series is doing it the wrong way and therefore contemptible? I can't get behind that.

Virgins' Empire, maybe?

There's also Every Day Is a Holiday, but chapter count is pretty misleading there.

I don't see how you can read this manga and think that its intended lesson on crossdressing is that, actually, no one should do it. The plain reading is that boys in dresses are cute, not boys in dresses are dangerous. Eru's not great here, but he hasn't hurt anybody and I really doubt he's about to start. He literally tells us that his shtick doesn't work, and he's just going to crush on Girly for a while.

You're bringing in a lot of culture war baggage that the author is probably only vaguely aware of. This story has already hopped out of any of the neat channels that we might have expected it to follow.

Liberty has an official translation as part of the Galette English edition. I've been reading along there and the new issue hit a, umm, notable chapter. It's not often I have to put a book down (do not throw it, it would be hard to replace) and go dig out six-year-old scanlation comments to keep me company.

Oh, the Cheating tag is on the series, not the chapter...

I'm not going to read ahead, but scanning the recent comments has me excited to continue the ride. For certain meanings of excited (and certain meanings of recent).

This chapter felt like an Otherside after-party lol. I agree with everyone saying this is definitely Yuri

That scene immediately reminded me of Otherside Picnic too. It’s like they both took place in the same bar.

The western dad rock is bad enough, but ipods and vinyl? This is child abuse.

I’m not going to be able to read shoujo for a while, any time flowers bloom in the panels it’s going to remind me of this.

Who knew lilies could be worse than box cutters?

Also I kind of find it unfair that Miyuki even gets to compete in this event she's been with their mom and been training together since she and the mom left and practically just ditched You... If she wants a record contract couldn't her mom just give her a contract? I don't know maybe I'm just reading too much into it I just think it's unfair

It’s honestly crazy that either of the daughters are competing, it would never be allowed in the real world. Narratively, this has to come down to the two of them in the finals, and then Mom has to pick a favorite? Really?

There’s got to be some kind of twist here to work as an escape hatch, because there’s no fair way to settle it with the current rules.

The academic term I've heard is gender detachment. Nobody gets assigned non-binary, and transitioning is a huge hassle. There will always be folks who aren't invested enough to bother.

Reading this series does make me feel a little bit like one of those Twitter phrenologists who pour over pictures of celebrities to work out who’s secretly trans (all of them, apparently), but that is very plainly not the author’s intended vibe. Better to take the mystery in the spirit that it is being presented. It’s just more fun that way.

Yui dropped a You’re not my type on her at the end of the last chapter. I can’t really blame Kanata for trying to get some distance after that.

Honestly, moving out is a good idea. They’re too much up in each others’ business right now.

I have never felt more American than when I realized I was annoyed that Ruka had charged the knife rather than draw her gun.

Calling out patriarchal or misogynistic influences on relationships is one thing, but do we really have to code that as heterosexual? The last thing we should be doing is telling straight guys that equitable partnerships are gay. What happens if they agree with you?

And Eru goes straight to the top of my Secret Girl list. That was definitely overcompensation for something.

I wonder if there's a story behind this one. It feels like it was written for someone.

In the anglosphere we would call that an open relationship with a stipulation of no long-term partners, which isn't that uncommon an arrangement. I doubt it comes with the level of communication I think you need for these things, and I'm completely sure women don't enjoy the same benefits, but it's not like we have no context for this.

I guess it also explains why the focus is always on NTR, rather than just cheating.

Just remember, Aika is eight.

She's nine after the birthday in chapter six, so it's okay now.

I didn’t notice this had an English release at all. Feels extremely meta to read it in the app and boost its ranking.

I think offering to sleep with Mao makes it yuri regardless of how romantic the underlying feelings are. If casual sex is subtext we have a whole lot of retagging to do.

Yuri crush has a stronger argument, but as far as I can tell that’s not intended to be used as a spoiler for will they, won’t they stories.

At any point in this chapter they could have printed "Oops, a love has bloomed" over the panel and ended the whole series.

It would entirely undermine the premise of the manga, but I want this to be like that one Discworld book where everybody is secretly a woman and hiding it, thinking they're the only one.

I'm new to this artist and I want to ask why do her characters in the minimalism artstyle has a bold, black line at a right angle on one side of their cheek?

I think that’s a blush mark. The chibi style doesn’t have room for the hatching she uses for blushing with the full faces.

I guess I get where the subtext discussion is coming from (particularly the title), but I have real trouble reading Nina's behavior as anything other than intentional romantic interest. She's instantly on edge when Mao shows up with a guy, gets flustered when touched, asks her out on a date, even offers sex. She backs off with an explicit comparison to the guys who hit on her, and they are definitely not subtext.

Mao finally breaks down because she's forcing Nina into a confession, and she know Nina doesn't want to do that. So why doesn't Nina want to? I would have thought it's because she knows it's doomed and think it's inconsiderate to put Mao through the emotional labor, but I can see how you could reach the conclusion that it's because she doesn't actually have romantic feelings to begin with and is offering up herself strictly as a way to save her senpai.

I wish Nina had been a little more forceful in her confession. I feel like if she hadn't backed off at the last moment, it would have given her space to put down that torch she's been carrying. Without that, she got to swoop in and save the girl, but doesn't get much in the way of character growth. Mao has the stronger arc here.

Still, they cleared the air between them, and at least Mao got to ditch her much shittier crush. Yeah, that counts as a good ending.
