Maybe I have too much hope, but Takahiko seems fairly decent all things considered. He wants to be better than his father and marry into a good family, yes, but those things aren't mutually exclusive with Ayano and Tsubaki having a relationship. I don't think he'd be too happy with becoming a beard, but whatever.

First time picking this one up, but I don't think it's going into a bad direction. The way I see it, it will finish with both girls together, earning money from Ayano's cloths designs (with Tsubaki as her model) that she will sell to brothels. It's already been hinted that the brothel is interested and they have an ally into the brothel already.

As for the fiancé, he doesn't seem like a bad person, even if he has ulterior motives. He is also a prisoner of his condition and family and I wouldn't be surprised he ends up being an ally once his situation will be resolved.

Anyway, quite a refreshing manga.

Has there ever been a yuri manga that ended up with the protagonist in a het marriage with the other half of the OTP as a side piece? Especially one where the MC is a sweet, pure-hearted girl like Ayano?

Well, that WOULD be era accurate, sadly (^^) Even modern Japan accurate, in a lot of ways. Still, I don't get the impression this is the direction the author is taking us. I'm real curious in any case, really looking forward to reading more :O

That would certainly be an unexpected new element to the plot ! It's possible I guess, the story does deal with sex in a large part.

I mean, all we know about the sister so far is she’s a divorcee who frequently (at least as far back as the flashback in chapter 7) has threesomes with a female prostitute and a baron’s wife, so I’d be a little surprised. …But it is manga…

I much prefer the interpretation that he’s a himedanshi. He saw his gay sister’s marriage fall apart and wants to be sure he supports both her and his gay wife the best that society allows. But he gives off some bad vibes so I’m not sure it’ll work out quite that cleanly. Especially since there seem to be several women fighting for Tsubaki’s attention. The sister may well see Ayano as a rival.

That comes with the territory for historical yuri (unless it’s fantasy past like in “A Love Letter for the Marching Puppy”). At least with stories set in contemporary times there’s a chance that some or all of the people around a character might either be OK with same-sex love or can be brought around to acceptance. But in period pieces, as you suggest, there’s barely a need for the concept of “comphet” because hardly anyone can even conceive of anything else.

I can see it, but he can also be someone who sees it as mutually beneficial. Solve their financial worries while also viewing himself as an altruistic hero, giving into a lavender marriage

If they're obligated by society to produce children, then it might make sense for Tsubaki, who already, uh, is used to such things, to be a surrogate mother (and Takahiko in turn would be a surrogate father). This might not sit well with some, though. I'm also not sure if they could hide the Wasianness lol

He could also adopt a child from the brothel and there could be ridiculous clandestine spy thriller nonsense going on with the brothel as a base of operations, but that's just my silly brain at work.
