I liked this a lot, its sad to see many people didn't. A cautionary tale of the arrogance and wastefulness of man, who discard things, animals, people as soon as they find something else they want.

instead of explaining things she could just turn her off and reprogram her like it was nothing, but to me this short story was excellent.

I wonder how it feels like to be stabbed at the heart?
Does it hurt so much or does it hurt too much that one will pass out without feeling any pains?

You’d almost say. It feels like getting told “I have someone else now” after being created to unconditionally love that person and being lied to for weeks.

You reap what you sow I guess.

Exactly why I don’t feel bad for Marie

You literally created a robot to love you like a human can. OF COURSE she’s gonna get violent when you suddenly says”I have someone else now, also you’re a bot so your feelings are fake”

Like Christ, that’s cold AF

There are some flaws with this story but at face value I like it lol

Pretty sure that same thought occurred to her on the bottom of page 38.

She's smart enough to build a robot that can simulate emotions but doesn't include anything like the 3 Laws of Robotics as a fail-safe?
And she tells the robot all that stuff instead of simply reprogramming her? If you see her as a robot then treat her as one...no explanation is owed to "it" before you reprogram.

Kinda breaks my suspension of disbelief. Would be quite the oneshot if those issues were fixed.

She deserved the fate she got, the bitch. You don't play with someone like that then throw them away.

Live in the hell you created, Kei. You deserve nothing less.

Honestly I just find the plot fundamentally unbelievable. You're telling me someone who can whip up an intelligent, human-passing synthetic with full sapience couldn't get funding from corps? Techbro investors would be dumping money on her faster than you can say "cheap labor." And that's not even getting into the idea that someone smart enough to make a sapient robot would go "oh you're just a robot, let me edit your mind now that you're obsolete."

Just incredibly contrived for the sake of the "disturbing" ending.

Do you also complain that Ray Bradbury stories are unbelievable? Because I think this manga fits right in with Bradbury and other works of speculative function.

Art doesn't have to be realistic--it doesn't have to be anything, it's art.

Dawg it's a one shot, did you really expect some Dune level world building lmao. This is like watching a Black Mirror episode then complaining it's not realistic. The realism of tech is not the point of the story. There are many short form media that are supposed to be unrealistic because realism is not what they're going for. In fact you'll find loads of them here, including by the same author. The only difference is they're happy stories so no one complains. Users in this site is obsessed with complaining about unhappy stories. Be honest, if the ending was happy you would swallow any unrealistic elements before I can say "suspension of disbelief".

I also thought if Kei-san thought that Marie was just a robot running a program, to simulate love, why did she even bother with her little "breakup speech". She could have shut Marie down for maintenance and removed the "love code" with no fuss or muss.

Exactly. Good concept, but forced. Maybe instead Marie could have seen Kei with her new gf and then done it.

so, i don't really get the critiques here. the artist was trying to convey an emotionally charged concept, not worldbuild. those are two separate purposes. logical holes don't matter as long as the heart of the work lands. that's subjective of course, and it's fine if it doesn't for you, but don't judge it by a rubric it never intended to fill.

anyway! my personal take is, this hits very acutely as a longtime shut-in NEET with brain issues(tm). it might be the autism specifically? but the first half is very clear in setting kei up as this freak outsider who's rejected by everyone around her and can't understand why. that's why she built marie in the first place. BUT, and here's the really fun part: what if you look at both of them as very unreliable, flawed narrators? i'm pretty sure that was the intent. everyone here talking about what love is and isn't, and that's the point. kei never had the emotional maturity or experience to know what love is. she could only piece together the idea of it from fiction, ideals, etc, and the end is her getting trapped within that forever. it's definitely dark.

i get the feeling kei has a much longer history of isolation from other humans than we get to see here. she's not really sure what humanity itself is/means, and so her sense of ethics is incompatible with most people. it's funny. you see her in the latter half finally learning to connect with other people, but she was missing that last bit of emotional maturity and empathy to understand what marie was going through. she's very self-centered, i guess is the right word? but it's still a tragedy, even if she brought it all on herself.

all in all, i really liked this. artist is awesome in general but this work is definitely a standout, and im glad i read it. i hope they get serialized at some point ngl

Hehe that ending. This is awesome, Nmi should do more stories like this instead of fluff :)
