Is it really "willingly" when she was manipulated by him? He was about to put them into an even more dangerous situation, pretty much cornering Matsuri. Her and Koyomi are both the victims here—he literally targeted a vulnerability (her love for her daughter AND him) so he could get out of the pit he dug himself and push all the blame on her, all while acting like he actually cared.

She could leave him and seek help; instead she went and committed a crime while he had his handss clean and now while she's in prison she left her daughter with a man who can easily sell her organs to pay his gambling debts.
Women who enable their scum husbands are to blame too.

I agree that she deserves some blame too. She's not a child, and can make her own decisions. I wouldn't put it all on her though but she's not putting all that on the husband either, no matter how disgusting he is. She's still otherwise a good person though, and that means something for the future. I don't think the same can be said for the husband.

I hope it was intented of murder, otherwise is silly

It being considered intended or attempted murder does make sense, given that her child was taken away from her, she isn’t allowed to see her, and it’s clearly weighing on her. But I also have a feeling it might involve domestic abuse, and that this is connected to her divorce, with the blame being placed on her even though it may have been self-defense. Still, I might be getting ahead of myself.

Yeah, I was completely wrong. This all stems from that husband, and I might add, a manipulator. I understand that you’re accountable for your actions, but to involve the family in the situation for whatever reason, and to put that stress on your wife who is taking care of your child, getting her to act on your wrongdoing in the form of a crime, is unbelievable to me. Then divorcing her and taking custody of the child, whom you were supposed to take consideration of instead of gambling, is just wild.

I’m confused. Why didn’t the mom get the death penalty?

...what type of country do you live in that makes you think embezzlement is punishable by death????

I live in the United States. I don’t actually know if embezzling is a capital offense in every state, but I think it definitely is in mine. It’s a really big deal here. I just assumed it would be the same in Japan. I guess not. I hope the daughter got taken away while the mom was away in prison. Me personally? I’d take getting abducted by human traffickers over having parents like that any day. But everybody’s entitled to their own opinions

I don't know of any states where embezzlement receives the death penalty. Also these parents are bad but saying you rather be abducted is a crazy statement to me for a lot of reasons...

^ They know people abducting children won't treat children they abducted nicely , right? ...Right?
Especially with the high profile sex trafficking case that's being revealed recently (edit: not really recently)... with allegations of fucking infanticide, even.

I bet you'd find you're mistaken, if you look it up. I don't think the US has any capital crimes other than murder (and aggravated murders at that, like other-felonies, multiple murders, or torture), treason, or espionage.

Okay, being a "drug kingpin" can qualify even if you don't get anyone murdered: https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/R42095#_Toc139460991

As for state laws, six call for death for rape, but: "Death penalty banned for non-fatal rapes as per Kennedy v. Louisiana."

Putting aside all of the legal talk. I just can't understand people like him, he had a good life and he seemed well put together at first. It was going well for him, his wife and his child but he decided to ruin it all. I know addiction isn't exactly something you can control, but surely there must've been a point where he thought "dang I've lost a lot of money, I should probably stop before this gets out of hand" but still decided to keep gambling regardless.

While she may not be blameless, I think it's pretty safe to say at least 75% of the blame is on him for putting them in the situation to begin with and for manipulating her into feeling stealing the money was her only option. Sigh, I feel so bad for their daughter she deserves better.

this just occurred to me after the fact, and i could be totally off base here, but... did she actually have any evidence that he was in debt? it didn't seem like he gave her any specifics, numbers, etc, just a manipulative guilt-trip appeal. and that might just be because it's a flashback, or the author's style, but. if the kid was already two, chances are their marriage had gotten stale for him. it describes how he turned much colder and was away from home longer and longer. maybe the gambling thing was legit, and maybe it wasn't, but it clearly wasn't the only thing on his mind in retrospect. he clearly lied very well to the police too. maybe he was actually cheating on top of it? and that's why she can't see her kid anymore, because he remarried some other woman who's now legally the daughter's mom. if the gambling was just an excuse, maybe it was this cruel petty scheme to get her out of the picture?

I think there is still more to this coming, to explain why she can't even see her kid. It ends on them asking the husband if he knew what was going on and stops. I bet he throws her under the bus and adds a bunch of lies and half truths. That being said, i don't know much about japanese crimes and punishments so i could be wrong. The fact that it ended on a cliff hanger before ending the flashback makes think i'm probably close to the right answer though.

Holy fucking shit, what a pathetic man that husband is. Blaming his ex-wife for something he was entirely the root cause of, and still refusing to take any accountability. “Having a criminal in the family”? Whose goddamn actions were it that pushed her into becoming that so-called criminal in the first place?

This is exactly what I expected and what I feared would happen. The insane bigotry around having even a minor felony (in Japan especially where there's a 99% conviction rate) is so disgusting, and frankly I am horrified to see some of the people in this forum mirroring that same worldview.

It was clear from the start that after pressuring and manipulating his wife into the crime, then letting her take 100% of the downfall, of course the man and his family would close ranks and completely ice her out. I'm glad that Ren and Matsuri found each other, and I hope that their revenge together through their manga, and can find solace in each other's company. I'm really impressed by this series and the way it delves into topics most manga are reticent to even acknowledge exist.

ngl this is still holding water. he's such a colossal asshole and clearly used to scheming and lying to get his way. fucking bastard. matsuri didn't deserve any of that

Wow what a piece of trash her awful husband was.

They said they're gonna take revenge through manga. I'm gonna assume the story they write/draw is gonna be what happened to her? God I hope it blows up and becomes huge so that piece of garbage gets what's coming to him. Hopefully by the end of this now only do they both get to live and be happy. She can also get her adorable little daughter back.
