Not even sure there'll be any actual romance. We had to wait the very last chapter of Maitsuki for a kiss.

Yodokawa's yuri is always very subtexty.

It doesn't have to take the form a kiss to have romance. There were plenty of it in Maitsuki, the story was mostly about it. Just because Yodokawa is discreet in showing display of affection, doesn't mean there isn't an actual romance going on.

As for the new title, not sure what to think about it yet. I'll follow along to see where it goes!

Well, the author commented this on her twitter
自分の中では百合だけどそうじゃないパターンかもしれない…

"I think it's yuri but not formulaic"?

Something like that:
"I see it as Yuri, but it might be one of those cases where it's not".
Not easy to translate one to one.

counterpoint: it would be really funny. "I don't care who you are as long as you're a teacher"

The romance genre typically puts more emphasis on conflict and the process of falling in love while slice of life focuses on the process of everyday life and the little things that can make it wonderful. So I would argue that slice of life may be the primary genre of Maitsuki, if only by a small margin. But the series is completely upfront about the way the main characters feel about each other and the fact that they become a couple, so it's not at all "subtexty" in terms of depicting a lesbian relationship. Subtext is about meanings that are not directly stated or shown in the text.

Yeah I think her work is lesbian centered just sometimes more slice of life than romance. Which is fine I think, there's a lot of different ways to go about writing anything. It being lesbian centered means it's a Yuri manga in my book.

I'm not sure what to expect from this one though. Before any concerns about whether there will be any on-page lesbianism: 46 pages should have been enough to create a strong impression about these characters, but even with Sappho Scan's explanation of the title, it's hard for my imagination to latch onto anything. The dynamic between Hotaru and the annoying high school girl feels especially underdeveloped, even though most of this first chapter is spent on their interactions. Two characters who interact so much should ideally have some chemistry even if they're not going to be a Thing.

The illustration on the title page is kind of fire though so I'm seated for one or two more chapters at least.

Cats of course have a similar idiom, something about "Throwing pounce-toys before monkeys".

Really liked this! I’m soooo nervous that this might turn into an actual teacher student romance tho. I hope it doesn’t go that direction.

I like that her totally normal "roommate" keep showing up like dead wife flashback

I think this will be a cute one with her watching/oversee helping the girl dealing with emotion/relationship while also having mysterious gf plotline on the side

Wait a minute, hold the phone . . . this kid is a keeper! Did you SEE that chocolate?! That is high-end professional quality stuff, and she made it BY HAND without, apparently, even having any particular experience, just with willpower?! That's insane.

Yeah, that was funny. I'm not convinced that an inexperienced in baking high-schooler could ever pull that off.

The first chapter felt so cute, but this second chapter somehow made me really uncomfortable. Maybe it's the teacher in me, but there are lines being blurred here that feel weird, or at least have the potential to. For all I know, next chapter I'll feel like everything is fluffy again.

It doesn't seem like Hotaru will get with Nekome, even if Nekome gets a crush on her later it doesn't seem like Hotaru will accept it or anything. It looks more likely that Hotaru will end up figuring out her relationship with her roommate/friend.

Also if it goes the full on Nekome x Shiratori route then at least the age gap isn't that bad since she's a recent highschool grad (I hope I read that scene correctly) so it's just a 2 year gap, Shiratori also isn't her teacher so the power imbalance isn't too bad either. Although I still understand it still feeling uncomfortable as a teacher.

For me it also depends on where the story starts. If it starts in a toxic place I'm not bothered in the least by student/teacher relationships. But this one started fluffy so it's putting me off a bit.

But it's also just I feel like the story has in this chapter put forth three subtle options for Hotaru to "cheat" with in a way that might be all in my head but just felt off to me.

Selfishly, I hope Hotaru and Nekome don't actually become a couple, I do like the way Hotaru cherish Maki and sees her in a special way even if she hasn't realized herself, and they seemingly have good dynamic, and I do also like the angle that the two main characters are not/will not be together, giving them a friendly chemistry unusual for the genre, and ultimately, the development of their "partnership/fellowship" towards breaking Shiratori's shell.
Fingers crossed,

This seems bizarrely complicated so far :P I have some degree of trust in the author though, looking forward to more chapters
