I'm probably going to get hated for this, but...

As much as I appreciate Mitsuki's character growth to becoming assertive and confident (and as much as Aya clearly appreciated that little move as well), Mitsuki is still showing facets of jealousy, control, and lack of trust. In real life, these things are huge red flags.

If someone had come up to Mitsuki and asked her about Western music, she would have gone into full "geek mode" and chatted them up non-stop; if said person had done that under the pretense of flirting with her, Mitsuki would not have noticed; she would have been ass-deep in gushing about Eric Clapton and George Harrison 0.38 seconds upon hearing the song playing on his phone. So, for her assume Aya couldn't deal with this shows a rather meaningful lack of trust, and maybe even a bit of projection.

And, considering the meaning of the song... Patti Boyd made her choice, and George Harrison respected it. Mitsuki would know that.

So yeah... I love this comic, I've loved it since the moment I first laid eyes on it, but I can't say I like this particular entry, and I hope it isn't the start of a dark path for Mitsuki.

This is all very new for Mitsuki; she went from being a virtual shut-in to having to deal with more social situations than she had ever experienced before on a daily basis. It feels pretty realistic to me that she would still be a bit awkward and rough around the edges. She's gotten so much more comfortable in her own skin within less than a year; I'm sure she'll get there eventually. She's a smart girl and she's quite empathetic, she's more than equiped to learn and get better as a person. Plus, she has an awesome girlfriend at her side who's really good at that stuff !

You're not entirely wrong, but also, consider:
They're teenagers, and teenagers don't know what the hell they're doing. Insecurity is perfectly normal at this point.

It's not like she ripped her away from him or manipulated her or anything.

Also the whole "back off, she's mine" moment is kind of a romance cliche that often isn't intended to say anything negative about the character

I don't agree with that. I don't think she was jealous, I think she just wanted to say gently I'm to the guy that he was trying to go for a girl that was already taken. Aya would have probably not noticed and she probably wanted to avoid her the trouble of having to turn down the guy.

And honestly, even if it was jealousy... She is a teenager. She is learning, experimenting. What she's done doesn't even come close to a red flag.

She was nice in the grand scheme of things, she embarrassed the guy so that everyone would know and avoid making the same mistake with her or Aya later.

Haha! Yes! Good job, Koga!!!

And I don't think I've ever known a person to NOT get EVEN A LITTLE miffed when someone's trying to hit on their partner. Like Akiosaurus said, they're teens and going through stuff, it's perfectly normal. And Oosawa didn't seem to mind and the rest of the class loved it.

Honestly, if Koga hadn't done what she did, I could see things going in a heavy NTR attempt direction. Honestly, if you're monogamous, letting others know you and your partner are taken is the best way to deal with things and if people still can't respect those boundaries, THEN you have red flags with those who choose to push on Koga and Oosawa's boundaries.

Everyone is different, everyone views relationships differently, and they don't have to be so linear or binary.

Not sure I agree with that. If you ask me, rather than Mistuki not trusting Aya, it read more like "is he really trying to hit on her? Oh right, that reminds me, we haven't actually addressed if we were dating or not. Might as well ask." And then she did just that and asked at that moment because what teenager has never had any impulsive acts.

If you notice, not once did Mitsuki tell Aya or the other guy not to talk. All she did was ask and left them to it thinking she could get back to her conversation with the former bully. She probably wasn't even thinking (at least not fully) about how that question would affect the other guy and Aya's music discussion.

I don't think you should get hated for this, but I agree with a lot of the replies. They're teenagers, a little insecurity is not unreasonable or a sign of future red flags.

On the other hand, I do also wonder how the Japan of it all factors into this. Controlling behavior is more common in Japanese culture where they don't want their partner to have opposite sex friends or to spend time alone with the opposite sex. I think this would also hold true for many people in Western countries, especially if they are older and married, but it's true for younger people in Japan (as far as I know). Mitsuki making it known here in public is in some ways helping the group know that it wouldn't be seen well socially for other people to hit on or confess to Aya.

The other part of it is that they're queer. Lesbian or sapphic relationships wouldn't be assumed by most students there. It would be hard for Ono to intuit that this wasn't an intense friendship without someone being explicit about it. So I think it is extra necessary, assuming Aya doesn't mind being outed, which considering that Aya's mom knows, I would think Aya doesn't care.

Right. I think comments about behavioral “red flags” in stories often gloss over or elide the fact that we’re seeing character beats and tropes, not a documentary of someone's 24/7 real-life behavior. Scenes in narrative media tend to be, literally, larger-than-life (more immediate, more sharply focused, and often more exaggerated) because we can only see select bits and pieces of a world and of certain lives within it.

It’s easy to forget that the opening chapters were all about Mitsuki worrying about not being good enough to be Aya’s friend or interfering with her life, so this scene is (as people have mentioned above) primarily about Mitsuki’s growth as a person.

There’s also the further fact that Aya was explicitly described (in a standalone character sketch) as having “no interest” in guys, so even if the two MCs weren’t in a relationship an intervention into (poor doomed) Ono’s attempt to hit on Aya would be an appropriate friend move.

Without having to refer to character notes, during Ono's previous attempt to hit on Aya at the prom she made a pretty unsubtle observation about her preferences through her musical taste: https://dynasty-scans.com/chapters/the_guy_she_was_interested_in_wasnt_a_guy_at_all_ch113#3

This didn’t really feel out of pocket for Mitsuki. I see it more as a sign of confidence than of jealousy. And it’s not like she yelled in the guys face or threw a fit. With as few words as possible she pulled Aya out of the awkward situation and let the guy know he was wasting his time.

Like maybe it’s a little catty and teenager-ish but there’s really nothing wrong with that in high school

I think Mitsuki showed maturity and confidence. I know at that age, I would've just watched and then been passive aggressive afterward if she didn't say what I wanted to hear [shrug] Mitsuki did great.

Oh, I was also a bit surprised that this chapter didn't continue from the previous one. We saw she passed but not much else. I know they'll get around to it

I've thought to myself before, with how pure and clean focused some people are with lesbian media I think maybe the only series and relationship people might not take issue with is Green Yuri. Since Green Yuri is very safe in it's relationship and it's vanilla in a good way, I can't possibly see anyone taking issue with the series or the relationship.

Nope I guess I was wrong, somehow Mitsuki gently confirming with her girlfriend if they're actually dating or not, because she wasn't 100% sure and was a little nervous about Aya talking to someone showing interest in her, this is a red flag and the start of Mitsuki's dark path to becoming a toxic girlfriend. I...don't even know anymore...I give up lol

Same. It's a bit surprising. Red flag get thrown around way too much. It reminds me of when everyone was calling everything a "logical fallacy." A lot of misuse/overuse. This was cute and harmless. Checking up on your girlfriend and making things clear in a roundabout way isn't an issue.
