Caku posted:

I'm withholding judgment on wether the guy is garbage or not depending on how he handles the situation afterwards, but either way he did recklessly endanger others with his actions. My mind goes to one of the first rules of gun safety: never point a firearm at anything you aren't okay destroying. Things like this are dangerous and accidents can happen, even if you're doing everything else right, so at the very least always keep it pointed away from things you don't want to harm. He didn't take the time to verify what was down range, and someone got hurt because of it

Technically, there wasn't anything down range from his target. The issue was a ricochet, so it's more a matter of not verifying that it's safe to shoot whatever you're firing at.

Yeah, no, Caku is right that Serina and Almelia were behind the cockatrice, you can verify it in page 22 chapter 9, the cockatrice is in view and facing away from the girls and towards the prince.

Almelia's carriage was ahead from the prince's, and the monster overturned the prince's from the horse side.

Ergo, he fired the magic without checking if the people in the carriage ahead, especially his fiancee, had evacuated the area.

I'm slightly fascinated by how the discussion focused on some kind of accident reconstruction and magic safety regulations. Magic doesn't kill people, I do!

Ah. You are correct. That makes his actions significantly worse.

Goddamn that's a nasty injury in that cliffhanger o_o Poor Serina. Getting a hand ripped off is a major life threatening injury due to the shock and blood loss, but fiction rarely ever considers that. Kinda like when people are shot in the shoulder and are mostly okay lol. Anyway, sure hope they can regrow that hand...

As said before, I'm not saying he isn't responsible for the consequences of his actions, only that calling him "garbage" may be going too far in this situation.

If someone, out of a misplaced sense of ego, pulled out a gun in a public area and shot at a criminal in a non-life threatening situation that's already under control by other parties to prove his masculinity, and in the process hit a bystander, what would you call that person then?

Since his life was directly threatened by the monster and only the tail was under control, this really doesn't apply here, though. Perfectly normal reaction, especially for someone who has been training to fight such beasts for most of his life, even if he may have gone overboard with the amount of power used, but that is not something easily judged in such a situation even without his personal issues coming into play. I really don't like having to defend a character who so far has been shown less likeability than the fiancé from Run Away With Me, Girl, but I stand by my opinion that "garbage" is going too far.

I maintain that his life was absolutely not being threatened on the basis of two points:

  1. His guards explicitly told him to evacuate, and even if he didn't trust their competency or judgment in the situation, he knew Almelia was nearby and more than capable of handling a cockatrice on her own. If the situation was as dire as you are trying to portray it as, why did nobody else seem to be attacking recklessly the way he was?

  2. His moment of panic that led to the incident was preceded by him flashing back to being humiliated by Almelia, a situation that likewise also not life threatening at the time. Would he really be thinking about the time his ego was wounded if he was afraid of imminent death?

In other words, I think it is safe to assert that he was not scared for his life, he was scared of looking incompetent again, and nearly killed someone because of it - it was only the quick thinking and bravery of another party that it "only" resulted in an ostensibly life threatening injury.

That hit was well deserved. But knowing his pride, he may cause problems to those two.

At least Serina now sees that Almelia's changing.

And I do wonder if the hand regrowth will get them unwanted attention.

I still don't get what exactly was the reason it took 10 days before that guy could show up, that explanation made little sense to me :P I guess he didn't get a chance to say what exactly is that compensation he arranged but I somehow doubt it was this time-intensive

So, garbage right? Once again, flying off the handle because of pride and making dumb, selfish decisions at the expense of others. He really can't handle people being better than him. Can't control his emotions whatsoever. Reckless. And we got even more confirmation of how foolish and unnecessary his actions last chapter were.

You know, it's pretty impressive that in 10 chapters a bunch of misunderstandings have been fixed. Like, if they wanted to milk this Almelia could have been under the mistaken impression that Serina was hitting on her for much longer, and Serina could have thought the engagement would make Almelia happy for much longer as well, but we kind of got through all of that quickly. Really, unless a new barrier comes, it's just about whether Serina realizes that Almelia has romantic feelings for her at this point.

i wasn't expecting her to just regrow her hand like that so quickly. thats kind of an insane power, i'm sure it'll cause more problems for serina in the future.

So much misandry in here, sheesh.

The prince attacked a monster in a moment of life-and-death panic and someone got hurt by accident, a perfectly human reaction, and then he went out of his way to apologize and try to make up for what he caused.

He only got angry with Serina because he assumed the injury must have been staged or something as a ploy to get the royal family indebted to her since no one can regrow limbs, he made a perfectly logical deduction that simply happens to be wrong in this particular case.

Jesus, some people here are so quick to cry "garbage" at male characters just for being male and making mistakes.

Funny how you people only know to reduce this to him being a man and not just like Almelia herself having issues regarding pride and making bad choices because of it. Nobody once said anything about he being a man and women characters here get as much, if not more, hate for the same reasons lol.

Oh lady in heaven, more people defending the prince. At least I can mute that crowd at mangadex.

My gripe with this snotty brat is how he chose to process his insecurities regarding Almelia.

Instead of training himself and achieving more proactively, he's still bitching at her for killing a cockatrice with a sword three entire years ago.

Boo frickin hoo, hunt two cockatrices with a sword then, instead of putting down your now ex fiancee for being as strong as she is. A strong future queen should be seen as a boon, no?

All he got to show until now is prejudice and an easily bruised ego. He can deliver himself to the dumpster until he fixes that attitude.

He didn’t go out of his way to apologize. He sulked and stayed away for days during her painful recovery and only sent an underling over to tell her she could still be a “concubine” at least (ew). By the time he got his pride to the point he could suck it up and make a real “visit” considerable time had passed. And instead of being curious how she recovered he immediately threw a tantrum and claimed it was a scheme against him. The scheme of him having to muster up even the slightest emotions for someone so lesser than him. He’s not a villain. He’s just the kind of banal evil that shouldn’t be in the position of power he is in.

Meanwhile the “villainess” is a human nerve ending when it comes to the burden of responsibility and feelings towards others.

This has to be a joke. Misandry? Did you really read any of these comments or is the prince's tendency to overreact and misread situations shared? I'm really not sure how we're not getting what the author is communicating. This chapter doubled down to make things even clearer, even more blunt, yet still? He has major character flaws, and they were the focus of these two chapters.

As I already discussed and was emphasized by the maid this chapter, no he was not in a life or death situation, his guards had it under control, not to mention Almelia. You do not start thinking about your wounded pride like he did if you are about to die, you think about your impending death. His disproportionate response was all about proving himself strong and capable.

, and then he went out of his way to apologize and try to make up for what he caused.

Not out of a sense of guilt or compassion. Because in his words, he is capable of "clearing up the mistakes he caused." Since he was surprised by the regrowth, he evidently not once bothered to actually have someone tell him about Serina's condition and how she's doing given that she had her arm obliterated by him.

You'd think her mental and physical condition would be on his mind, but it wasn't. (probably because he didnt give a fuck, but what do I know.) So once again, it's about his ego - which was why he wanted the steward to not get involved or assist him, so he can prove himself strong and capable.

He only got angry with Serina because he assumed the injury must have been staged or something as a ploy to get the royal family indebted to her since no one can regrow limbs, he made a perfectly logical deduction that simply happens to be wrong in this particular case.

So instead of being happy that nobody got maimed, he assumed he was fooled by, in your words, a ploy. Which in his own words "makes a fool out of [him]," indicating that his rage is the direct result of looking neither strong nor capable.

Jesus, some people here are so quick to cry "garbage" at male characters just for being male and making mistakes.

He is garbage. And you are making excuses for him when it is literally all about his ego to prove himself strong and capable. Is it a human response? Oh yes, I've met many people like him in the past. They're the type of scumbags that bludgeon their wife to death with a golf trophy over their feelings.

Misandry

lol

I honestly did not expect it this late in the story, but it was a pleasant surprise twist on the trope. :3

I was, however, at little bit disappointed about how quickly Serina's hand situation was resolved, especially since the first few pages have been very good at treating it like a real career-ending traumatic injury that it definitely was. I admit that her powers have been foreshadowed and, if you squint hard enough, they can be stretch to cover limb regeneration, but I am personally much more interested in the interactions that happened between Serina and Amelia during those 10 days than in what came after. Then again, I am a sucker for hurt/comfort fics, so maybe it's me who's being weird.

Seriously, how do people say things this crazy and not hear it themselves?
