I think you're taking this a bit too seriously. It's not a major issue for them. It's also not a hotly kept secret. She's just embarrassed.
It's a pretty major issue. If you can't communicate with your partner then it's over. And in stories a communication problem is overused. But this author never disappoints. The problem is set up, realistically explored, briefly frustrates things, and satisfyingly dealt with.
