Rurika is cute. And this looks interesting. Maybe (at least not yet) nothing larger than life but it does not need to be. Approved.

I think the "but we're both girls" trope is a lot more realistic than pretending being gay is the default in the story. Like the person above me said a girl might be worried about losing her friend and she doesn't even bother to think if said friend is into girls without having asked. At some point I just can't even suspend my disbelief. And then all the side characters turn out to be gay too?
Sure, it's a bit tiring to have to go through that denial phase in every story but given the high school setting I think that's the normal thing to go through. I went through it and a lot of people living in more homophobic environments did as well...
Not sure if the main characters here are aware of being gay. The main character seems like she likes looking at cute girls without giving it much deep thought but I may be wrong... The other one seems like she might know she likes girls but hides it for the most part and tries to get close to the protagonist since she felt a connection. At least that's how I read it.

what are you complaining about?? didn’t we already have for the past decades all the “eww gay me try guy first” drama thingy? now we have as IT SHOULD BE in bloody 2022 almost 2023, people like you are weirdly greedy for a specific type of story setting when there are a tone of story with cheep drama in it,

and I for one I’m glad we got more of this! let’s ACTUALY concentrate on the relationship first! a good plot for the Couple to pass, that the plot of figuring out if she likes girls or she is bisexual, that got boring quickly and mosy of the time we don’t get an plot to test the couple relationship, because you can only spin the troupe of finding she likes girls or not in limited ways.

Lmaoo, I also live in the rural environment so I feel the anxiousness, awkwardness, and embarassment the mc has. This basically describe what I was going through when I finally went to a big city in a different island for college

Do they just keep mistakenly calling her Tada-san and she's too meek to correct them? She said her name was Tano.

I don't have access to the raws so I can't check but probably a translation oversight, kanji can be read multiple ways.

For me, and I think a lot of people, we already had enough of the homophobia experience IRL. I really don't care if it's realistic, I have absolutely zero, zilch, nada interest in reading about it in fiction. I certainly don't feel like it breaks suspension of disbelief in any way; the key to suspension is internal consistency. As long as a story is internally consistent, there's nothing to disbelieve; stories don't have to take place in our homophobic timeline. In the same way there are fantasy worlds with magic -- including ones with contemporary settings -- there are 'fantasy' worlds where being gay is normal, and to me that's just lovely.

That's not to say that it's a bad thing to write stories that are true to our own timeline, as I'm sure a great many people also appreciate having stories to relate to their experiences of discrimination, but just as many people read fiction for escapism from the more unpleasant aspects of our reality and it's perfectly valid to write that kind of story.

I think the main girl is aware of it, because she says "I'm afraid I won't be able to contain my feelings" and "If I stayed in the country I'd never have to face these feelings" meaning she's aware of her sexuality and hiding it. The other girl's "I want to get closer to other girls, but they don't like me" immediately followed by "I'm just living a lonely life without love" definitely means she's aware of it, especially when you take into account that she's had lots of guys crushing on her and has rejected them all.

They're both closeted lesbians.

I could tell only looking at the cover, but dang, this raws are of the highest quality I've ever seen, plus, the typpesetting and the redraws work are simply top notch. The amount of care and dedication the entire scanlation team put into this leaves me absolutely speechless. I enjoyed every second of this chapter to the fullest thanks to you, guys

it's nice to see a character with social anxiety that I can relate to for once, well I suppose her anxiety is not totally socially related, but I can feel the similarities

Tropes are just tools meant to be used by a writer. Both a gay story with "BUT WERE BOTH THE SAME GANDER" and a gay story with no homophobia in the setting can work, and it all depends on a execution. I also think that both conventions, with homophobia existing in the setting, and no homophobia in the setting, have thier own values. Sometimes its nice to read a story about overcoming your own and soicety's prejudices to find happiness with your loved one, but its also nice to read a story where a couple is allowed to just exist the same way a straight one does

Bah! A truly realistic story in modern Japan would have them all in face masks, not clinging to some pre-pandemic fantasy world...

Bro. She's a better lesbian than me. Unlike a useless lesbian like me, she unintentionally scored a drink with a pretty girl.

Wait, are we gonna have a High School Yuri story that doesn't have a "But we're two girls!" Moment?! Both characters seem aware of their own sexuality right out the gates, which is kinda nice.

It's increasingly rare to find "but we're both girls" moments in modern yuri works (high school setting or otherwise), which is not necessarily a positive thing in my book. It's like trading the angst and drama for fluffy wish fulfillment. Ideally you want a little bit of both in the genre.

It's kind of been bit of a joke for 10 years already in Japan. Even Madoka Magika made fun of it. If you hear it in a manga or anime, it's used as an ineffective argument that some other character will immediately dismiss. Real problems for Japanese queer couples are just getting shunned or shamed, or having to fight against a system that was not build to accept such relationships as legitimate (marriage, adoption, assumptions that two parents of same sex are worse, etc).

But it's actually quite relevant in SK and Chinese yuri, such utterances being lived reality. There are many outsiders who have negative or dismissing attitude towards those who dare to break heteronormativity publicly, and you can get harassed and ostracized with little legal protection. SK also has lots of crazy Christians who are as bad as US evangelicals about this stuff, and bend their kids into pretzels rather than allow them to "live in sin".
