It's just for some reason people mistake her ears for donkey ears, and won't let the meme go. Your aren't wrong in that assumption, but I'd say that, counting only the anime, they've been responsible for the most gayest moment so far in the franchise.

^ In the anime, yes, but I wouldn't say the franchise. Certain moments in the manga and SID still holds the gayest moments in the franchise (we got multiple cheek-kisses and explicit "this girl is attracted to girls" text). Take a look at @lovelivegays on twitter, they have some of those moments.
