Oof. Now that's rough.

Now, as we've seen Junna can get quite jealous and possessive about Hane (any day now we'll need the Yandere tag). If she's right about the magical girl being someone else, could she be trying to break Hane's spirit, just to make sure she's her One and Only?

Yep, this is one of the most brutal response to a love confession I've ever seen.

I think the one from "2DK, G-pen, Alarm clock" still wins

Honestly the "aaaaaaangst" "Drama" and "What the fuck am I reading" tags would not be out of line for this chapter.

The way I read it, the blame is 10/90. Magical girl should not be projecting onto evil general, but she might not even know she's doing it. And more to the point, Former General basically just lured the magical girl into a romantic setup just to rip out her heart and step on it.

Here's the thing: The worst thing that can happen is not being told no, or the other party being disgusted. Because the opposite of love is not hate, it's disinterest. Magical girl is clearly pushing herself really hard to be able to do this, and Evil General cuts her off, rejects not her feelings but the validity of the feelings, and then proceeds to mockingly tear into her for allegedly using the general as a replacement.

That's not just a rejection, it's psychological warfare.

If we're talking about the one where she just ignores it, then I'd say it's close, but not quite this bad. Because that was the result of panic, and this deliberate psychological abuse.

Well, that escalated quickly, like turbo-kind of...

This ep leaves us with more questions than answers.
Junna sounded cold af when she called out the older magical girl thing (a very specific piece of knowledge about Hane's past)

We'll have theories for days, at least until Sunday when the next one comes. Mine is that the cloaked figure IS the actual magical girl that helped Hane. Also I don't think the mayhem during the festival was part of Junna's plan.

yeah i think the unasked question is "how the hell does junna know about that in the first place"

On another note, I still don't buy that Junna ISN'T the magical girl that saved Hane. I think she just doesn't remember. We know she doesn't seem to remember her life before she joined the bad guys.

personally, i think theres almost no way shes the magical girl
between the confusing age stuff (even junna called her “older”), and the fact that junna was referring to her as a seperate person, almost like she was someone else that she knew of, i dont really think they could still be the same.

i mean, junna obviously wouldnt know that they were the same if she was in fact the magical girl, but i still dont think it makes since anymore

Was I actually the only one that for a very long moment thought that junna here at the end actually was the older magical girl herself instead of junna and that was the twist? Yes? OK :(

Oh, that hurt- that hurt a LOT

I wonder if the twist is that Junna is somehow derivative of that older magical girl created by the dark army and whatnot. Because not only would it explain her foggy memory and her awareness of the magical girl, it also explains why she was assigned to observe Hane, since she was modeled after someone she admires.

Her response was definitely brutal, but I don't think you're interpretation of it is quite correct, because Juuna isn't disinterested or fully rejecting her. She's completely rejecting the premise (and hurting Hane quite a bit in the process), but she's also saying that she wants to continue standing in for that girl, if Hane will let her.

Honestly, I suspect an actual rejection or betrayal would have been less painful.

On another note, I still don't buy that Junna ISN'T the magical girl that saved Hane. I think she just doesn't remember. We know she doesn't seem to remember her life before she joined the bad guys.

Eh. If we're assuming brainwashing/memory loss is involved, then it's perfectly possible for Juuna to be aware of her former self while also not realizing they're the same person. With that said, you're probably correct about that not actually being the case.

Well...that was one hell of a chapter.

Also something I noticed: Who was in Chapter 16 with the "Hani" tic? I do notice that, despite the entire Magical Girl thing...no talking mascot yet. (And same with how they got their powers)

I felt a little bit less intentionality in this than I think you're reading into it – this isn't Former General mocking Magical Girl for using her as a stand-in, this is Former General thinking "Alright, I love this girl, and I guess she loves me because I remind her of that girl who looks good in white (obviously; why else would she want ME), so I'll respond to her confession positively, if maybe with a certain bitter aftertaste; hey, uh, why does she look so upset –"

I hope the following chapters have a better explanation sincerely, I want to see Hane go into this relationship with sincerity. Knowing she's in love with Junna and not with the older magical girl she admired.

Well, this is going to exacerbate Hane's bottomless guilt.

Also, considering how obviously smitten Juuna is with Hane, I don't think she purposely meant to slam that trauma button. If anything, I suspect her self worth is as low Hane's (what with her being Hane's former enemy and all).

I mean Juuna is kinda correct though...Hane still thinks her and the magical girl are the same person and even if Juuna has clearly fallen for Hane she also has had to deal with being totally aware of this fact which resulted in this response. Now this isn't exactly going to be good for Hane who is already consumed by guilt on multiple fronts and this probably just added another layer to that but still

I agree with this. Even if Junna ends up being the older magical girl who is brainwashed, she is also a different person at this point. Hane should at least know that despite the fact that she is going to be shattered by it.

We have been seeing things from Hane's perspectives for the last few chapters so it's real nice to see that Junna was very much keeping tabs on Hane. Like Hane is alot more mature from a year later, but she is still (at her core) the obvious yet strongest magical girl. I do believe that Junna could have easily known from Hane's lovestruck yet guilt-ridden behavior and a little bit of background check.

Now, as we've seen Junna can get quite jealous and possessive about Hane (any day now we'll need the Yandere tag). If she's right about the magical girl being someone else, could she be trying to break Hane's spirit, just to make sure she's her One and Only?

Kinda agree here too. I think Junna's intention is basically this in twofold. She does absolutely want to break the magical girl but her response to Hane's love is genuine (if twisted with the first intention).

What an awesome chapter and subversion of the firework tropes. Like I really thought from last chapter, we were going by the books but I really like that we just get the big bombshell even after the biggest fireworks would have drowned out Hane's confession. Instead, the distraction came from the magical girl side where some monster ended up causing a ruckus which gave Hane an out to avoid confronting what Junna said.

I really hope the next few chapters switches to Junna's perspective to explain how she got the infomation, her perspective from being saved by Hane, and how she sees Hane in comparison. I get the feeling (established by Chapter 0 and 1) that Junna's view of Hane is placed on a high pedestal (strongest magical girl) that she wants to build to the highest point before tearing it down.

No idea if it will turn out this way, but it seems like the simplest explanation for the older magical girl situation is that she's Junna's older sister, which Junna doesn't know about due to memory tampering. I feel like Ch. 21 is not-very-subtle foreshadowing in that regard.

Also now thinking Junna's continuing attachment to the evil general persona may at least partially be a long, slow semi-subconscious crashout over believing she neither has nor deserves Hane's actual love.

Yeah, I think Juuna has some self-esteem issues too. Maybe something along the lines of "no way my former enemy could like me somone like me. I must be a stand in for someone else."
