I wonder if the twist is that Junna is somehow derivative of that older magical girl created by the dark army and whatnot. Because not only would it explain her foggy memory and her awareness of the magical girl, it also explains why she was assigned to observe Hane, since she was modeled after someone she admires.

My opinion on this manga is entirely predicated on whether or not the author lands the metaphorical plane of momiji's gender and transness. The manga seems? To be going for something closer to transfeminity so far, so to what degree in which it affirms Momiji being a girl will correspond to how well it'll all land for me I think

It's interesting how Sae's backstory is actually only the third we've received so far, if I recall correctly. We obviously get Koharu's, of course, and then we get Ena's, which intentionally has a lot of parallels to Koharu's but in a more straightforward tragic sense, her being a person who didn't have much love in her life compared to Koharu missing her chance for love due to her not noticing.
Sae's glimpse of her backstory seems to break the pattern once more; it seems as though she was killed due to what I read as a bullying victim snapping and cutting her throat in the bathroom, which is triggered some sort of PTSD when Ena starts viciously fighting her.
Obviously this is a job of sorts for the cupids, so a disconnect will be inevitable in some degree, but Sae being so uncaring of the actual humans she's pairing up that she let someone die just so she didn't have to put her in her calculations.... crazy. I wonder how the story will weigh the moralities of the characters. Does Sae deserve hell?

Ah, the ending really does feel like they had to compress like 3/4ths of the story into a double volume and then move up the story arcs..... I think it is coherent for what it is, though. Hana being able to break through to Sadako, and Hana finally cutting Yoshi off... I wish it had more chapters but I fully blame the publisher and not Sal Jiang. It's crazy that it got axed after FIVE CHAPTERS seemingly.

I re-read the first few chapters of that to figure out why I liked that but not this, and I think it has to do with who the main point of view character is, and also how they're established.

In Boy Who Cried Wolf Tells Another Lie Today, Itsuki is flat out told by his sister that he was in the wrong in various ways, but also him being the crossdresser and main point of view in the first few chapters naturally has us sympathize with him. Also, he in particular is not specifically said to be the root cause of Tokujira's androphobia; in fact, he learns he was basically just another random guy to her. (Addendum: Itsuki is told straight up by his sister "your plan is a bad idea, and the lies you'll tell will pile up until it all falls apart")

In Momiji and Kouyou, it's established early on that Ao is soured particularly on Kouyou early in her life because of his bullying, and eventually contributes to her general misandry / lack of liking boys. By having Ao as the point of view character, I think the reader naturally takes HER side, which is of annoyance that this guy is sp persistent.

But thats comparing apples to oranges right now, maybe. One's a manga that's done and I like, and one is the opposite of that.

I'm not going blanket say ALL the negative response to the manga was from trans folks, but in the little collage, I saw the trans flag in a bunch of the display names, so I assume the reaction was not of dogwhistle transmisogynist "ew why are these [men] in yuri" type comments but rather "this manga seems to be writing momiji in a stereotypical way and I don't like it" esque comment. Which I don't think is TERF or transphobic to hear from a transfem online? I think there's a general sentiment of recognizing a bunch of Otokonoko / crossdressing manga to have transfeminine readings under particular lens, so this manga being examined under such lens will face scrutiny in how the characters are currently being handled. I got Nothing against the scanlator, though, translate what you wanna translate

It seems as though there's a lot of potential reasons for why Junna had the charm, but what's of note is that she seemingly previously tanked the attack that gave her the chest wound, but something that Hana did finally almost did her in the same spot. And Junna's identity was likely not known by Hana beforehand, seeing her shock at her unmasked. So either Junna stayed the same age and defected, or Hana grew up when she became a magical girl.
Also, isn't it interesting how Junna has the power to erase memories and that's been used twice already? I wonder if she falsified the charm memory, or erased her history as the general before that point.

Well, I think it's a decent and good ending overall. I won't complain about it, even though I can see through my eyes the potential for one more volume. All of the introduced conflicts resolved themselves in away satisfying and such a way that it makes sense; Miwa got to talk with her ex once more and finally end the lingering feelings behind what had happened, Miwa got to tell her mom the truth, Akane can be herself in front of An (even if it is just at home), and An has a strong family, even if it isn't a conventional one by any means. It's clear that even though Akane and Miwa are not necessarily in romantic love with one another, there still is love, from both of them to An, and perhaps platonic love to each other.

Good ass ending. Despite how wacky it was at times, it was surprisingly grounded in the conclusion.

This is a similarly experimental arc, with the meta framing of it being an unexpected ax or 2. Its actually axxed, and the chapters have been experimental tatle bc sugar has nothing to lose like. but man i actually really enjoy this future, so im hoping for the next chapter. Airi becoming legitimately depressed, losing all interest in any hobbies, obviously not knowing what to do with herself, isolating... its actually heartbreaking how relatable that is? i'd be VERY surprised if the ax was faked, I wonder if it was the author knowing how many volumes they were going to get and intentionally paced the story to have a more dramatic ending with the timeskip, avoiding the typical "and they live together and kiss a lot and nothing bad happens" in favor of something off the beaten path.

the isolation after uni and getting depressed and losing interest in hobbies part is too damn relatable tbh. and especially the part where she's only really talking to folks from high school still..... I know the diegetic reason is to not introduce new characters at the end but still. It's like reading a story with parts of my own life as the ink.

it's a damn shame that the series got axed, if it did. seems like there was going to be one more arc in high school before this timeskip, but they had to immediately jump ahead to the uni stuff.
My current guess with what happened before the timeskip is that Airi feels like her conversational skills that she was using were becoming less and less useful, like she felt more like a fish out of water and regressed perhaps. It doesn't seem like she quit uni or her jobs because she was underqualified or got pushed out; it seems more like she hated how isolated she got and it sorta spiraled from there. Thinking about how in the beginning of the series, she was thrown off guard by the otaku-kun she tried chatting up, but was able to acclimate with talking to other folks like Fumi. I wonder if as the years went by through her jobs, she ran into the same sort of problem, but instead of otaku genre mismatch, it was just like a realization that she wasn't necessarily "normal", so to speak. Her social battery life is pretty low and needs recharging, so what if she thought it all to be too much later on in life? just a theory.

wait, this one's a longshot of a theory but here it goes: I think Airi interpreted Nagi pulling her hand away as fear, of course, which her brain translated as Nagi feeling love towards her, which, for one reason or another, couldn't quite comprehend. I think Airi may otherwise recognize her own feelings of love towards Nagi, but does not necessarily believe that Nagi reciprocates those same feelings towards her, which is why she might have otherwise short circuited when she thought that Nagi was otherwise feeling "Love" towards her. My guess is they, the two of them, tried out a hypnosis kit Fumi brought; and having been watching horror stuff, they decided to do something in that direction. Airi went under, and Nagi put in a couple of triggers. Maybe something like 'when I offer to hold your hand, you will see me as a monster' or 'when you go home, you'll go to my place instead'.

But one little detail is catching my attention: the panel where it is stated 'I'm Takane Nagi and you're Arimoto Airi.' That sounds like a reaffirmation of some induced identity shenanigans. Like maybe the Airi we see is actually Nagi made to think she's Airi, and that's why when she tries to run home she runs to Nagi's home.

In any case, I look forward to seeing the curtain drawn back on this relatively benign mindscrew.

so, you weren't actually that far off with what mostly happened. Nagi was reaffirming the identities, but mostly to double check "hey, you know you're Airi, right?" which is what I expected in that from what little i've seen in that particular category, double identity swap at the same time is a bit out there. but like pretty good deduction based on what we were given!

it's also interesting that Airi seemingly might have gotten wires crossed in that rather than merely feeling good off of feeling fear, she might also feel fear she otherwise would not have if she was already otherwise "feeling good" or of love, perhaps. which is ESPECIALLY interesting in what parts she otherwise feels fear she wouldn't before.

I am also curious, where did the induction script for these chapters come from? were they translated or were they taken from somewhere external?
