Walking into the Questionable and Problematic Trans Representation Store and loudly yelling to everyone inside "Hey guys, this trans representation seems kindof questionable and problematic."

Anyways not to be too mean to people who obviously just mean well but sometimes you need to see the weird shit to understand why the good shit is good. And sometimes that weird shit has some good shit buried inside it. That's the whole reason why this website hosts all kinds of shit.

I'd been reading the comments like popcorn while intending to wait for more chapters, but I gave in. And it's... a light nothing? Doesn't seem worth 4 pages of comments yet. Yeah, has some fanservice bits, like the friend boob-groping and return casual spanking, and dubious bit like Kouyou's assumption that harassing Ao made her dislike men. But maybe Kouyou will learn better? High school boy, you know? Not well known for deep gender-issues awareness.

Holy cow reading these comments were amazing, especially because I haven’t even read the chapter yet. But now that I have…while yeah, it was the most ethical chapter, FOUR PAGES OF COMMENTS for the FIRST chapter is a bit much.

While yes, there are plenty of things that Icked me out, like the fact that they (the trans??? Person??) bullied uhhh the black haired girl, just to confess over and over again after she had already said now was a huge problem on my part. Love bombing is LAME AND LOZER BEHAVIORRRRR, though it was nice that they apologized.

But gender wise, I mean the only real problem I saw was how calling someone who’s trans coded (…I think at least) a dickgirl…oh and the fact that the only reason (that we know of so far) that they changed their gender (expression) was just so the girl they liked might give them a chance. :/

Idk so long as it doesn’t become the “you see! You’re not gay, you were just afraid of men!” Type then I’d probably give it a try.

Honestly I'm not as upset as I might have been at first, and compared to some things on this site this can at least be interpreted in a more positive light.

We're lucky to be able to talk about this stuff on equal playing fields like we have been. Too many times in life its been like either preaching to the choir or to a brick wall. Maybe it's because there's some actual ambiguity unlike tedious IRL topic.

Edit: It'd be clabber brained for her to just be afraid, because she wasn't, but she definitely is flustered about the idea of a pretty girl wanting to date her. It's been done I'm sure but also it'd still be silly to be like 'oh yeah I'm definitely a cis man and am gonna go back to dressing as a guy when I can after having gone through supermodel makeovers for days and days'

Like if anything I'd sooner believe such authors just have complexes.

I don't really see the point of this manga.
It's not advocating for lesbians.
It's not advocating for trans women.
It REALLY doesn't seem written by someone who is queer, or even has close queer friends.
So the way I'm reading this is it's written for straight people, by a straight person, who just picked up a random-ass premise for shock value, and the mangaka has neither the artistic nor writing chops to pull it off.

Personally, not offended by it. It just seems. . . Dunno. Very hollow and very schlocky.

early pages are very difficult to get through, the persistent behaviour is very "romcom film persistent protagonist man keeps trying until heroine capture target gives in", and the repulsiveness of that trope persists

but page 24, is an incredible shot. momiji i do like the way you are taking responsibility actually. become a girl! forever!!!!

since it's only chapter 1, too early to say how it will go, but im interested in the hardships momiji might face. will she have to learn makeup on her own from scratch? how will her appearance vs her voice have her treated in public? she wears a skirt exposing her thighs, will she have to do hair removal? how aware is she of hormonal issues, will she know to reduce DHT before balding kicks in?

how dedicated is she, will she stay like this for life? will she look the way she is despite all her family records/birth certificate saying male? will this have her treated differently in school and/or work settings? will she face any kind of societal accusation that she is a predator and ontological rapist? is it too early for me to be referring to momiji as she? (probably but i will do it anwyay. i believe the only purpose of men is to become women.)

no idea where the manga will go from here or if it will handwave the potential issues that are going to come up, but for the time being i look forward to momiji's resolve to becoming a girl. ...and maybe back off on the love confession thing a bit now that konno knows what's going on.

Ya, not the best start. Betting on this one to crash and burn. I would like to pleasantly surprised by stupid teenagers figuring out their problematic bs and ending up friends after alot of horny comedic nonsense, but all of the warning lights are are flashing red and the alarms are blaring.

I really am unsure of this one. The premise and wording worries me. I mean it could have good trans representation, but it could also just be offensive.

But seriously, I personally do not think being transgender could ever be the center of the plot. I personally don’t think gender identity issues could be part of the story because it’s not something cisgender people could easily understand. Thus, I tend to strictly see these things in a scientific way and not in an artistic expression.

That being said, I do think this will be an amusing rom-com, as they’re being honest from the start. But I really hope they can get the years of confession harassment and the reason for the change straight. I believe that should be the core of the story. Cross-dressing is merely an excuse for tomboy-femboy dynamics, and a pinch of sexuality exploration for now. I wonder what’s going to happen later.
Sure hope things won’t make people argue over trivial matters again.

wish I could join the discussion but I really just don't care about this one one way or the other, not the art, characters, or story. that being said I'll probably still read new chapters & keep up with the forum, seems to be more interesting than the work itself at this point. might even get some cool insights & perspectives, or just make for some entertainment at the very least

That's also the impression I have. Like someone wanted to make a transbian story, while having no personal or connected experience, doing no research, and having pretty bad misconceptions about both lesbians and transgender people.

I think that's the whole reason where I'm just thinking "Wow, that's shitty" rather than being angry at it. I've never been a huge believer of Hanlon's Razor, but this one actually feels like incompetence.

There's a difference between "squeaky clean" and "outright lesbophobic or transphobic". Which is certainly a possible reading of this first chapter, to be honest. I can't help but remember that work that was pulled (with the agreement of the scanlators) because a woman went on a date with "a man dressed as a woman" and the community rightfully treated it as a transphobic parody of transgender people.

This one, with its "guy transitions because s/he wants to bang a lesbian" plot, is... actually worse ? Sounds pretty normal that people are being concerned, voicing it, and discussing whether they think they should tolerate the lines being crossed or not.

It's something people are trying to do right now, because transphobes decided the WNBA was their next stop on the transphobia in the USA tour.

They attempted it a while back with the movie Lady Ballers, which is basically an even worse juwanna mann. Especially considering the movie started as a documentary and was retooled as fiction afterwards.

Now, I'm betting you're thinking "Wait, a documentary?" See, the idea was they were basically gonna pay dudes to pretend to be trans women and have them try to get into the WNBA to prove that trans women are men and such fascist nonsense. They could not find a single person willing, so they decided to try and make their point as a transphobic comedy instead.

Yes, the protagonist of that series is a tomboy (Sumika), and she has a male classmate (Masaki) who adopts a girl alter ego to appeal to her tastes. The main difference is that Sumika starts that series already pining for her lesbian girl bestie, Ushio, so Masaki is somewhat of a loser heroine. He's also a more shy and quiet type, with no history of being mean to Sumika. He makes for such a pretty girl that her alter ego is hired to model for fashion magazines for a while, and ends up briefly catching Ushio's attention.

I might be one of the few people who liked that arc? The main weakness of it was that a bit too much of the shenanigans hinged on Masaki's younger sister. On the other hand, the fact that most of the (cis) girls in that series were so messy probably helped make Masaki stand out with his gentle demeanor (both in boy and girl mode).

Huh, maybe the creators of this series should have also surrounded the title character with a gaggle of messy, card carrying lesbians. They still have time to course correct...
