It’s cute that Umi’s brother knows and supports her in his own way. I half expected him to say something more, but he recognized that she didn’t want to say anything yet and went along with it.

Does Umi’s brother know or does he just like Shou himself?

After rereading all of this.

  1. I forgot about the whole mermaid thing. I'm curious if her mom really is one? She did say her dad is a giant liar. But if he is what really happened when she fell in the water and wound up on the shore and didn't just die lol?

  2. Ubi is in love with Umi but at the same time she's part of if not the main reason Shou and Umi ended up together lol. If she wouldn't have gotten into the fight and headbutted Shou and forced a room change into Umi's room they might have never gotten together because what brought them close was their late night sea walks. It might have happened any way since Umi was already slightly crushing on her but it probably wouldn't have since Shou is so anti-social.

  3. I think about half their friend group is starting to suspect they're together Or at least that Umi is dating someone through different interactions and I love that no one has called her out on it if they have and are waiting for Umi to say so herself.

Half?

Umi - doesn't count
Ibu - maybe
Zumi - maybe
Nae - should

Yosshi - no evidence
Ken - probably not, and who cares?
Makki - ditto

Huh, thought there were 8 total, not 7. So 2/6, maybe 3/6 is Nae if hiding.

Then of their roommates, Baba almost certainly suspects. Fuku dunno, we hardly see her.

Ibu would hate it, Zumi probably doesn't want to get involved, Nae who knows.

Yeah I think the latter, see ch11 :P

EDIT: actually I reread this myself and I'm less sure, there is another scene with the brother I didn't remember at the start of it, when he does discover Umi's dating someone, so he could have conceivably connected the dots. And she's even denying a boyfriend in the newest one and the brother hears it! The pieces of the puzzle are all right in front of him.

EDIT EDIT: okay he even hears in ch11 it's "Shou-chan" and in the same chapter he sees his sister greeting her and calling her out by name. Can't imagine he doesn't suspect it.

EDIT EDIT EDIT: he even hears her inviting Shou out to the festival and later sees them leaving for the festival. How can it be so obvious that I didn't notice on first reread. He 100% knows, we don't even need anything outside ch11.

He's got a crush for sure.

I think she just got lucky and washed up on the shore.

Mari (Baba) doesn't suspect, she knows. She knew before they did. She picked up on the vibe as early as chapter 3. She's the only guaranteed knower.

As far as the others, including Nacchan, it's impossible to say since we don't get their perspectives, but never underestimate the power of comphet to see "roommates" instead of dating.

That’s an interesting scene, since Umi could have easily played the “Stop saying weird things!” card, as she does at the New Year’s party and the Valentine’s Day candy-making scene, but she doesn’t. She blushes and basically acknowledges that she is seeing someone, and as you say, it’s immediately strongly implied to be Shou.

I'm not sure Baba 100% knows they're dating. She does know they'd been sneaking out together back in the beginning, and Umi is teasable about it, and Shou is interested in love. She'd warned Ibu "those are probably going to get even closer" (after the near-drowning.) So she's probably at "if they're NOT dating I'm gonna hit them for being stupid".

It’s both; he asked her who “Shou-chan” is after she hung up the phone and when he asks if she’s dating someone, Umi asks “Is there something wrong with that?”.

Later when Shou shows up at their restaurant, he sees Shou and clearly has an attraction towards her. He then learns that she is the “Shou-chan” that Umi was talking to.

Then while Umi and Shou are walking to the festival, Umi recognizes that her and her brother are more “similar” than she thought while thinking of her brother’s reaction to Shou.

Finally, he realized that Umi was making the chocolates for Shou but was denying that she was dating anyone after she admitted it to him previously. This is why I believe he knows but recognized that she wasn’t ready to admit it to the whole family yet.

In the second chapter the science teacher asked Shou if she was "Trying to steal her man" refering to her and Ibu's conflict, little did sensei know she was not that far from it but being the other way around (It might had been about Shou keeping sea stuff in their room, but I have a theory that it had something to do with Umi, like Ibu noticing that Shou glanced at her from time to time)

Low key, i kinda would like to see Shou being all in throwing hands for Umi, althought she is not that type of person

Ah, chapter 11. With the restaurant right after that.

Yeah, if he doesn't think she's dating Shou, he's a dunce.

only just found this
dang Nae falls right into the "terrifying straight girl" archetype. for someone who's mouth constantly talks about this ma-kun, her body has the highest skinship quantity and intensity of the whole cast

if anything, the thing that surprised me most on a reread was how much i didn't like yosshi. she's really pushy and has a habit of doing her thing and dragging everybody else with her, regardless of how they feel. the cultural festival chapter with her ignoring what umi said and just taking her to see the show, or frequently talking over her and making assumptions. to a point this is a character flaw with umi too, that she isn't good at putting her foot down and setting clearer boundaries, and i don't think yosshi means badly by any of it. but on a personal level she annoys me ngl

ibu is a pain in the ass but she's also an awkward creature and that gives her points with me

You're absolutely right.

Eat shit Ibu, go away.
Shut up Yosshi, mind your business.
