"Custom" in this context is an archaic English term for "business". This meaning is the origin of the word "customer"; a customer is one who gives custom to a place of business. The translator's use of this archaism is probably deliberate, in order to foster the old-timey feel of the work.

Ehem, bad poetry aside, I got interested in those comparisons to yaoi in previous comments. I haven't read much yaoi, so I mostly only know its tropes from wikis and discussions, and this manga seems to carry the most infamous ones rather shamelessly, such as the predatory dynamics and the characters' design. Yaoi with a Yuri paint job, if you will.

Other than that, I want this work to exploit its historical setting. So far, this very well may take place in a Starbucks, with a barista and a light novel writer (Or some weird gochiusa fan fiction) and feel mostly the same.
Oh well, I'll keep at it in the meantime.

Actually, if Dictionary.com's Random House Unabridged entry for "custom" is accurate, the sense of "the customers or patrons of a business firm, collectively" is not exactly archaic or obsolete, it's just rather rare nowadays.
