i'm rereading the first volume since it just came out in English and they did say that the school is an orphanage for kids without parents, so something definitely happened to Haru's family. Orphaned by the war seems the most likely explanation then

Eh… wait, oh right, they’re the doomed couple. And I just know they’re going to get more sapphic Lex scenes than the main pair in the anime. It’s like sugar and spice, giving all the sweet moments to the side couple first, only to doom them later. Sigh :\
