i dont actually recognize femboy as a thing really. It was derived from discourse around "tr*p" without engaging fully with the transmisogyny therein. It's not that i dont think ppl who choose the label dont exist or it doesnt help them describe their expression in some way, I just think its a wildly irresponsible word with too much history to be reclaimed at this time, particularly by TME ppl. It is still tied to a fetishized transfemininity and i think its usage in the denial aspect of capital T Transphobia is clearly outlined when people use it to minimize a perceived severity of one label or another to something more ambiguous. I mean the phrase i've literally seen be used for me reading her as a trans woman is "jumping the gun".

When "trans woman" is seen as an escalation from NB or femboy rather than something positionally distinct, I am immediately skeptical of your ability to see trans women as women. It wasnt that long ago that "drag queen" or "sissy [fetishist]" sat in the spot where NB and femboy now occupy in functional usage. Especially with the prevalence of people degendering trans women. "I didnt know if you were nonbinary or not so I used they" vs "I didnt know if you were just doing drag* or not" (a perceived acitvity of gay men). This is not me saying I dont think NB people exist or whatever, just that there are some that have transmisogynistic shit internalized that should be hashed out, not worn as a label. I couldnt imagine any world in which Xiaoyang would like that label, as there is still 'boy" in it.

This is feeling pretty off topic but I want to address some of these things before bringing it back to the manhua.

Your argument would make more sense if there wasn't ambiguity in the drag scene. It's not always clear. Some of them are in the process of transitioning and use drag as a way to get comfortable with themselves, and some of them are just using it as a form of expression and are not trans. You're trying to draw these specific lines, but being queer can be messy.

I agree that femboy, to me, feels a bit more of a fetishistic term like sissy, but if that is how someone wants to identify, then more power to them. Words can change, and it can be a different term for a male crossdresser. Or it could be a step on the way to accepting their trans identity, something to try out in a safe environment and see how it feels. Certainly there are people out there that engage in fetishes like say being sissy that are not trans, as there are people that through fetish discover their identity.

And more specifically to the manhua, Xiaoyang feels more comfortable seeing a bunch of presumably cis people crossdressing in the flashback. Does that mean that Xiaoyang is or isn't trans? No, it doesn't mean anything specifically. But the reason we don't "jump the gun" is because telling someone their identity before they've figured it out isn't cool. I don't think people are arguing against you because you're saying that Xiaoyang is trans, but rather that because the author didn't immediately make them trans then it has be transphobia. I also think Xiaoyang is most likely trans, I'm just fine waiting for the story and character to take their time and figure it out.

It's ridiculous how much I'm invested in this character.

My little blorbo is growing up and I'm crying.

Favorite character of the series for me. Really loved these chapters. The father is trash and the mother is garbage but maybe recyclable.

Looks like it. No idea on whose authority since she's 19, but I also doubt they'll care. Hopefully the next chapter will be the town fucking them up instead of something depressing happening.

this 100% feels like it's hinting at institutionalizing her or tossing her into conversion therapy. someone PLEASE step in before this gets worse, there's only so much the poor girl can do by herself

Certainly sounded that way, although whether they'll actually succeed is another question entirely.

Holy shit. Narratively, it feels kinda fantastic to see how nothing is resolved - her father is dumb trash, but not stupid dumb trash. Not all problems are solved by simply deciding to stand up for yourself, not when both people and system are against you.

Emotionally ? This feels devastating and the wait for the next chapter is going to be deadly.

Taking a guess that Peachtown's support is going to be critical in keeping Xiaoyang safe, it's also horrific to think of what would have happened if she didn't find her place there before standing up against that asshole father...

The mom is as much a victim as XiaoYang, honestly. The hints are all there. She loves her kids and regrets everything that has hurt them, and is shown to have been kind to others and generally leaves positive impressions on them. She's just married to a belligerent bigoted abuser who threatens her family with violence if they don't conform, and lives in a culture that gives no institutional power to the abused. She's been beaten down, figuratively if not possibly literally, and she thinks the only answer is compliance.

Yeah that's what I was alluding to by calling her that. Agreed, mostly. I would disagree with treating her as just a victim though. She's an adult and went along with these decisions. We don't know if she was fully against all of this either. I don't really like treating adults as though they have no or little agency in these things. The Dad is super aggressive but she could have passively agreed with a lot of the same stuff. Not really enough about their history to say for sure.

This is a very good summation of it. "Femboy" was popularized as a label as a direct reaction to the public opinion turning against "tr*p" as transfeminists very successfully spread the word that it was a transmisogynidtic slur. The extreme sexualization of those labeled as femboys is entirely in line with this, as it's exactly what "tr*ps" were subjected to before. Likewise, the insistence on not assuming a character or person is a trans woman, and instead treating them as femboy-until-proven-guilty, is a clear example of how the term is applied transmisogynistically. Xiaoyang is not naturally a man any more than Xiaoen is. There isn't a default gender, only that which we are coercively assigned and that which we choose. The pressure to continue identifying as male is self-evidently immense; there is no material harm, and in fact great material benefit, to encouraging those perceived as men to consider if they would be happier as women—this is why interpreting characters in ambiguous situations as trans women is not something to be stamped out, but encouraged. As the person I quoted said, people are allowed to personally identify as, write, and interpret characters as femboys; before doing this, however, you must learn to recognize and understand the truly unbelievable pressure women are subjected to, telling us to be femboys instead. Cisnormativity does not prefer gender non-conforming men to gender conforming men, but it absolutely does prefer any kind of man to a transgender woman. I am in community with femboys who acknowledge this; it isn't an attack on them or their people.

Bringing this back to My Dear Lass—Xiaoyang's gender is not ambiguous, so I'm confused why this discussion has started up around her at all. A few chapters ago she outright said "I'm going to be a girl." There's no crossdresser vs. trans debate to be had anymore, the character herself stated her gender.
