The only happy ending for this one is Ai never coming back, and Kon somehow moving on. There is no scenario after this chapter where them ending up together can be considered as a positive.

I might be overly optimistic, but I think what Ai really wants is not to protect Kaede, but she wants closure. She was an important part of her life, and some people needs closure to turn the page. It does seem she really love Kon and wants to move on but is unable to do so at the moment.

Well, it doesn't help that the end of the chapter sounds really omnitious though...

Kon, I'm begging you to find a girlfriend that treats you better.

If Ai gets whatever she would consider closure and comes back after some time has passed and Kon has lived alone on her own terms for a while, I could see that working fine. I'll be an idiot and trust Ai that she no longer loves her ex romantically but genuinely feels she's something like family.

My only major issue is with how selfish and tunnel-visioned she's been with Kon. Whether she likes it or not, by running to save her ex, she's choosing someone else over Kon's pain. There's no dancing around that as much as she tries forcing nuance where there is none. It's frustrating but realistic that she fails to fully accept this choice she's making, simply because she doesn't believe she is romantic with her ex anymore.

What an ominous end page. I wonder how long the wait is, I think she is coming back, but I don't think when shes back, things are going to be the same

We could also see it the other way around. To me, she seems in more in psychological distressed than Kon (even if Kon is more "vocal" about it), why should she ignores her own pain because the situation also distress her girlfriend? There is no easy way out of this situation.

The correct choice would have been to first have closure with Kaede, and then date Kon but this didn't happen and I really think Ai would never be able to be truly free from her ex, without proper closure. That relationship was fucked up, and it really did hurt her in a profond way. I mean, just a reminder, but she wanted to kill Kaede and then kill herself at the beginning of the manga...

Kon choose to embark on her journey with Ai, on her own. She used Ai to come up of her shell and affirmed herself. Ai never lie about what she wanted, nor did she pushed Kon to follow her (she was grateful for it though). Ai was even upfront about the fact that she could kill herself, and that she couldn't promise she wouldn't. She was fucked up from the start, but that because she was fucked up that Kon was about to affirmed herself in some way. She was able to see someone act and defie society's expectations and that's why she was able to start coming up of her shell, I think.

I'm not trying to defend or accuse anyone here, but I feel like their relationship was toxic from the start, and on both side. I feel like the imbalanced is a bit too much into Kon's side given all the comments, without consideration for AI's own trauma. Not that is excuse what she is doing, but it's not surprising and Kon clearly thought this could happen. She wouldn't have hide the fact she meet Kaede's husband for example. She didn't hide it to protect Ai, she hide it because she was afraid Ai would try to pursue Kaede again and leave her.

I don't think the story is trying to paint any of the MC as bad.
