The only happy ending for this one is Ai never coming back, and Kon somehow moving on. There is no scenario after this chapter where them ending up together can be considered as a positive.

I might be overly optimistic, but I think what Ai really wants is not to protect Kaede, but she wants closure. She was an important part of her life, and some people needs closure to turn the page. It does seem she really love Kon and wants to move on but is unable to do so at the moment.

Well, it doesn't help that the end of the chapter sounds really omnitious though...

If Ai gets whatever she would consider closure and comes back after some time has passed and Kon has lived alone on her own terms for a while, I could see that working fine. I'll be an idiot and trust Ai that she no longer loves her ex romantically but genuinely feels she's something like family.

My only major issue is with how selfish and tunnel-visioned she's been with Kon. Whether she likes it or not, by running to save her ex, she's choosing someone else over Kon's pain. There's no dancing around that as much as she tries forcing nuance where there is none. It's frustrating but realistic that she fails to fully accept this choice she's making, simply because she doesn't believe she is romantic with her ex anymore.

What an ominous end page. I wonder how long the wait is, I think she is coming back, but I don't think when shes back, things are going to be the same

We could also see it the other way around. To me, she seems in more in psychological distressed than Kon (even if Kon is more "vocal" about it), why should she ignores her own pain because the situation also distress her girlfriend? There is no easy way out of this situation.

The correct choice would have been to first have closure with Kaede, and then date Kon but this didn't happen and I really think Ai would never be able to be truly free from her ex, without proper closure. That relationship was fucked up, and it really did hurt her in a profond way. I mean, just a reminder, but she wanted to kill Kaede and then kill herself at the beginning of the manga...

Kon choose to embark on her journey with Ai, on her own. She used Ai to come up of her shell and affirmed herself. Ai never lie about what she wanted, nor did she pushed Kon to follow her (she was grateful for it though). Ai was even upfront about the fact that she could kill herself, and that she couldn't promise she wouldn't. She was fucked up from the start, but that because she was fucked up that Kon was about to affirmed herself in some way. She was able to see someone act and defie society's expectations and that's why she was able to start coming up of her shell, I think.

I'm not trying to defend or accuse anyone here, but I feel like their relationship was toxic from the start, and on both side. I feel like the imbalanced is a bit too much into Kon's side given all the comments, without consideration for AI's own trauma. Not that is excuse what she is doing, but it's not surprising and Kon clearly thought this could happen. She wouldn't have hide the fact she meet Kaede's husband for example. She didn't hide it to protect Ai, she hide it because she was afraid Ai would try to pursue Kaede again and leave her.

I don't think the story is trying to paint any of the MC as bad.

Kon isn't toxic in any way. To me, she's really innocent and dependent of Ai, of course there are some Kon's actions that will make you say "nooooooo, don't do that my dear", everything she does has a reason even though the thing may be not the best thing to do, but she doesn't do any thing that is toxic as what Ai does to her.

Hell, she begs Ai to be with her because of dependence, this relationship is the one Kon really felt good and that she was loved, will she just give up immediately? Of course not. Kon's dependence is knocking the door violently because what Ai is doing to her.

Yes, Kon choose AI knowing what's coming, but how would she know that after a long time of peace? And they seemed alright after a (apparently) good resolution of Kaede and Ai's thing if we don't look in the eyes of a reader.

Her ex must be very good to not be convinced with her actual that look identically

To any young impressionable gals & pals reading this; DO NOT settle for someone who prioritizes their ex’s feelings over your own and most importantly NEVER EVER beg someone to stay and/or love you!

I think my main issue with his comic is that I'm not yet convinced of their love. I don't remember seeing any interactions between Kon and Ai that made me think "ah, I can see why she would love her".

That's not how you show love or find closure. Closure is what you find internally; it's not something someone else can give you. And especially not by abandoning your family to go on a wild goose chase to look for your ex - the only result of that is that even if you somehow find closure for that one regret, you create more regrets in the process.

The only way this can be received is that Kaede is more important to Ai than Kon. And just the amount of emotional damage she did by choosing her inner demons over the person she, allegedly, loves is enough in my book to never talk to her again.

We could also see it the other way around

I've seen it the other way around and it's because of that, that I am this harsh. If she wants to leave that's fine but break up with your GF. Don't keep her in limbo while you go off on this goose chase for your literal ex lover, especially when we both know Ai has no idea what she'll do once or if she finds her.

She also quit her job and made definitive decisions without the consent of her partner. This wasn't a discussion between her and Kon; it was "I've made a decision, let's figure out how to deal with it." There's no nuance there, regardless of Ai's concerns. She entered into a relationship, she doesn't get to make these careless decisions in a vacuum. She's choosing her ex over someone she claims to love. That claim is what I take issue with.

It's clear she shouldn't be involved with anyone right now. And what's Kon's sin? Wanting her GF to cut contact with her abusive ex who Ai is now leaving her for? Such a sin. I think we're struggling to make this another "both sides" thing, as though "both sides" is always the sensible answer. Kon is not perfectly innocent but this is on Ai.

If I blame Kon for anything it's for believing Ai was better than this. Kon's struggled with self worth and that led her to someone who doesn't seem to think she's worth much either. Ai is unfortunately in need of professional help but that can't be Kon's responsibility. I hope she doesn't spiral and uses this dress as the start of her own life making her own decisions, leaving Ai to walk the earth in search of a unicorn (who she of course doesn't still love, it's only platonic...). If Ai returns, fine. If not, so be it.

It's obvious that Ai was never really committed to the relationship. She attempted a rebound with Kon, after feeling abandoned by Kaede, but in the end, she just can't let go because Kaede gave meaning to her life.

Also, Kon isn't that innocent in the unraveling of the relationship. She fell in love with the way Ai is free and just lives the life she wants, but on the other hand, tried to make her fit in the "normal" life she aspired to, even though it goes against Ai's nature and the very nature of their relationship (lesbians). She's been trying to shackle Ai to the idea of "normal" her mother distilled into her from an early age. In that way, she's also "toxic".

So, it's actually a good thing she realized this and is letting Ai go with a promise to come back.

But then, the last lines of the chapter are ominous and they'll keep on being involved with each other obviously.

Also, there's a recurring theme of "fate" here. Encounters fated to happen, but also fated to fail, like she already used in "Brides of Iberis". Which relationship will fail remains to be seen.

Being in or asking for a committed relationship is shackling and against the nature of their relationship (being lesbian)? I'm assuming that I'm misunderstanding what you're saying but I'm still a little confused there; I don't feel like Kon has asked for much. What has Kon asked for that's so absurd? Her idea of normal here is not really the same as her mother's more restrictive thoughts. Kon has been too dependent but that's been to the benefit of Ai more than anything. Kon has allowed herself to become Ai's therapist when that's not a role she should have to take.

What she realized at the end of the chapter is that she's been living life trying to satisfy people (the new person being Ai) and she needs to be independent. Instead of running away with Ai, she decides to be self focused and let Ai go. I don't think that decision was about helping Ai or setting Ai free, just not making decisions based around Ai anymore.

Also, if fate is a theme in the story, it's been as an unrealistic sentiment--to me its the actual shackling that's happening in the story to Ai and being abused by the ex. I don't think we're supposed to view Ai believing that finding the note is a secret calling from her ex and say "yeah go get her, follow fate." So far it feels like that shackling is partially what the Blue Garnet represents wrapped around Ai's neck.
