Not to mention there seems to be a recurring motif with Kasumi and hanging. (Bottom panel of ch3p21 where the window framing evokes Kasumi hanging; the light fixture shape and placement at top center panel of ch7p13, which are absent in the reverse shot; bottom panel of ch8p22 where she looks like she's hanging from the light fixture).

I skimmed through the series and this isn't even all the hanging imagery. Chapter 4 has a ton (appropriate since it's the one that mentions her friend's suicide), from the hanging rose on the cover and here to Kasumi positioned in front of her hanging uniform. Chapter 5 has another hanging rose, and positions Kasumi below a narrow shaft of light. Chapter 7's cover has Kasumi's ribbon getting lifted above her head. Chapter 9 has a hanging letter, and puts Kasumi right in front of the bookshelf divider to look like she's hanging off it. This isn't even counting a lot of additional panels that manage to put a long, narrow line above Kasumi's head that I didn't include because they're less definitive.

Btw in case you already forgotten, the tagline for chapter 11 was

"Carved in love, stained in red"

...Absolutely no subtletly was found here.

I think in a weird way, their relationship absolutely is wholesome.

In setups like this, most of the time the couple becomes more and more dependent on each other. The typical development would be that Sayori gives up on the idea of going to another college for the sake of their love. But really that's just accepting the fact that in the end, there's a lack of trust between the two in that hypothetical scenario.

But that's not how this situation ended up playing out - because they irrevocably marked each other with those scars, it actually resulted in a greater degree of trust between the two. Mizuki accepts that Sayori has to independently do certain things for her own sake (which is what going to a separate college effectively entails in this scenario) and is perfectly happy, currently betraying not a single hint of doubts that Sayori has become disinterested in her. At some point they had to have sat down and talked the situation out, coming to some kind of compromise about what Sayori needs to do to realize her full potential.

I think it's also hilarious to imagine them having the most passionate fucking session after cutting each other up, and then, while they're lying in each other's blood and other fluids, Sayori going "ok fr tho im not going to your college its shit ngl" and Mizuki being like "uuuuuuugh fine no you're right this place is shit."

If you think about the future the two of them share together, it's happy. They trust each other. They're realizing their own goals, even if it means they will have to spend time apart. They have the approval of their families to live together. Of course, the incident that triggered this was twisted, but in some weird way they actually benefited from it. It's like, super romantic.

To me there seems to be a lot of implication from the senpai's (even though appearantly they freaky af) that all of the hurt they inflicted on each other could have been avoided if they just were honest. Like they could have arrived at the point they are at now at without mutilation if Sayori said "hey I really want to go to a different school but I love you so we'll figure it out" lmao. Obviously mutilation via box cutter is an extreme example but the mangaka seems to love their melodrama. Im certainly not complaining lol.

I don't think the mutilation is extra - it's something that represents physical proof of their bond, that they're exclusive to each other, and probably why Mizuki can accept that Sayori won't tire of her even when they are apart, like what happened to the couple in their novel.

Much more romantic (and painful) than rings!

What toxic Yuri does to the human mind.

But also don't get me wrong I'm not mad about any of this lmao. Toxic co-dependency go brrr.

Well at least the crazy is mutual. Still has worrying implications for the future of the main couple if Sayori and Mizuki are supposed to be parallel to them. Maybe Kasumi's suicidal tendencies will activate something in Haruyo like a sleeper agent.

I'm not even sure if you're serious or not.

Kasumi needs to stay far, far away from them. I'm still praying the story doesn't go down the parallel route.

I'm pretty confident that HaruKasu will not follow the same path because even though the couples in the short stories of Hanamonogatari share some obvious common themes, from what I've heard each has its own unique obstacles and conflicts. If Dear Flowers is aiming for a bouquet of stories about various couples (each with their own flower theme, similar to Hanamonogatari), then HaruKasu's story and SayoMizu's story will likely share some common themes but will still be different enough to make predictions about one based on the other unreliable. That is to say, although both couples will have to find a way to thrive in a world where two women are not supposed to claim each other as lovers and life partners, I suspect their challenges beyond that will be different.

Particularly in the case of Sayori and Mizuki, I can only make guesses as to how them being a lesbian couple affected their relationship. The number one reason I can think of is that maybe both of them were so isolated from their peers that neither of them had a trusted third person to talk to about their relationship candidly. I figure that because Sayori tells Kasumi that the fact that they are a couple is still a secret, but it's only an inference and could be wrong. In any case, having to keep a relationship a secret for years would be a major source of stress on it.

On the other hand, the fact that Kasumi finds herself attracted to another girl seems to contribute to her fears about her relationship with Haruyo in a more straightforward way. We also have more clues about where her other anxieties and insecurities come from, and at least to me they don't seem that similar to Mizuki's. And if we consider Kasumi and Mizuki as the more unstable people relative to their partners respectively, they are also different in that only the former is noted to be less wealthy than her partner (given that she attends the school on a scholarship). Honestly, the more I think about it the more different the two couples seem than similar.

I hope that blade had no rust on it. So far this series is very good. It's gripping and each chapter has a lot of content. It's like a manga with a 2005 like concept but with 2025 like execution.
