Just to clarify, as usual, I was talking about story tropes and plot mechanisms, and making absolutely no generalizations about real-life human beings.

I think you came up with something highly plausible (and we could come up with other possibilities), but I wonder how long their purported arc will be. Luxi's mom is written in a way where she's very isolated and seems to have no one besides Luxi, whereas the mom friendship hasn't been going on very long and had its trust severely damaged. Reestablishing the friendship without false pretenses seems like it should be its own arc, while I don't think the author will want to spend too much time away from Luxi / Tong Tong. Unless the author is going to make most of that happen off screen and surprise the MCs, I would expect it take more than one arc.

Damn, Mom's being written too believably as a depressed Asian mother...I dunno what the author's intentions are but I actually don't want the moms to hook up? I really feel like sometimes there really is a time and place for everything and them pairing up would really be a bit too convenient and almost take away from the snippets of realism with Luxi's upbringing to have both daughters and mothers pair up. Though an arc where Tong Tong's mom plays wingwoman for Luxi's mom's post-divorce romantic adventures would be welcome.

I feel the same way, but honestly I trust Xian Jun enough that I'd be happy with either a romantic or a platonic relationship budding between them. I think either way could work if its handled with tact and care. I do appreciate that the mother's reasons for acting this way are so realistic, and I am hopeful for an arc that does let Luxi and her mom re-establish a good relationship with one another based on mutual trust.

Wow. man this manhua is really art, huh? That hurt to see, it's such like... a realistic depiction of someone struggling nobly with the life they've been thrust into, trying to do the best they could with the tools they had, and stumbling bc they don't have some qualities they simply weren't able to develop. It's really tragic, and empathetic. It's so interesting how that interacts with our experience of her as homophobic, and as making her daughter hurt and worry. I would like to see this more in works of fiction, honestly. I think it's a really important thing to think about, and come to terms with.
