Is that even automatic ? Never really looked into that but always thought it was up to the parent or child if they're old enough.
If their parents remarried one of them would have still their fathers surname and the one that went with mother would most likely get the new surname. I'm pretty sure at her age she had to change it to match her new father's. Also not automatic but once mother married new guy and changed her surname along with that, she probably applied for changing for her daughter's surname at the same time. I don't know details about it too as well, especially in japan, but it doesn't seem that unrealistic. There were other mangas where character's parents divorced and they always changed their surname if they stayed with mother that remarried. There is also a option that when they divorced, mother went back to her maiden name, and in this case she would most likely change her child's surname too.
