No worries, I'm just sad she didn't get to make the series she wanted to make...and all the other Yuri cancellations that keep happening. I'm heartbroken and frustrated once again...

She said she had a lot of things planned and tons of settings she wanted to get to. Definitely sounds like what I thought and this was planned as a much longer series. Unfortunate but happens sometimes to unconventional yuri series, especially with less romance focus. Japan isn't as interested in those it seems and they often have more sizable overseas audiences.

However this never got released overseas (first volume is just about to come out in US and France), so didn't get the chance to succeed, especially when her series are very popular overseas. I guess those purchase don't matter to them, since they didn't wait to see how those releases do. She even made the announcement in english as well. Weird decisions since you'd assume the publisher would know that beforehand but that's how it goes. Still very traditional.

Reminds me of what happened to my favorite series "The Flower Princess of Sylph." Same situation but went the self publishing route and even got an official English translation on her own so the western fans could continue supporting. That's been going well. I doubt Sal will go the self publishing route though like that one did. From how she's talking it looks like she needed help spreading the word about the series, but it sounds more like she needed it to release to more regions earlier. I wonder how she'll try and wrap this one up in two chapters.

Yeah I got the impression from her posts that she is frustrated and sad, understandably so. Also happy that some enjoyed her work, but it sounds like it couldn't reach the audience she wanted to because of restrictions, and so she couldn't tell the story she wanted to tell.

I could be wrong but I also think some of the issues with pacing and so forth are very possibly because she was told to wrap it up in a single volume after volume 1 didn't hit the numbers it needed to. I genuinely think volume 1 is great, and I believe if she got to make the series she wanted to make it would have been incredible.

I also thought of "The Flower Princess of Sylph", and that's another series I wish got all the love and support in the world. It's frustrating and sad all around.

Flower Princess is at least still thriving as she publishes it herself. A new volume is coming out in a week or so, too!

If you didn't know, she publishes everything monthly on her Fanbox (and has even gotten an up-to-date English version on there, too). When it's time for volumes, she releases them on Amazon and Booth, for Japanese and English. She just opened an Instagram account for the series and publishes many animated shorts about our couple that she makes herself on Twitter.

Thanks for the info, I bought her complete Book Walker release so I need to get into Fanbox and/or the volume releases now.

Gonna copy-paste what I posted on BSKY:
I'm not surprised, it's really messy and you can tell Sal Jiang is not used to write an action manga. As sad as it is, I hope she can improve to try this type of manga again in the future. I do love her other works, and action with magic and yuri is pretty much the perfect combination for me.

Already seen someone say it's because "the suits" only want generic school girl yuri. No, it's because Wicked Spot is genuinely not good. The pacing is way too fast, it introduces too many characters without dedicating time to make us care about most of them and keep adding new plot points before the readers have had time to digest the last ones. It had great potential but the execution is just not there.

Definitely. The Fanbox is run well, so I'd recommend it.

Already seen someone say...

I've been generally avoiding social media discussion around this partly for this reason. People are going to throw shade at the type of Yuri that they don't like, coming of age school setting Yuri in this case, and completely ignore Sal Jiang's other successful adult series. Including one of her series getting a 2 season adaption. Also on a side note of successful adult focused series, another example is She Loves To Cook She Loves To Eat getting 5+ volumes and a 2 season adaption, along with various series focusing on adults being successful. And yet people on social media always have to put their energy into hating something because social media is a machine fueled by hate. It's not helping Sal Jiang or this manga. Especially when more Yuri should be successful both with adult and younger characters, and both types getting cancelled all the time sucks.

i'm kinda not surprised at the news. it had some fun ideas, but the pacing doesn't let you get attached to any of the characters. like this latest chapter had me like, wait, there's romantic tension between sadako and hanako? since when?? up to this point it felt kinda buddy-ish with hanako instead set up with tae wol. which i was indifferent about because im kinda indifferent about everyone here. it's a shame because i usually really enjoy sal jiang's work. i hope her next manga has stronger writing than this

People in the animanga side of yuri xitter and generally very unaware of the number of yuri manga that get live action adaptations since they are not anime.

I just found out this is ending at chapter 16!?! Was it cancelled it had such great potential

Sal posted this earlier today: "I’m surprised but happy to know such many people miss Wicked Spot already. It will end but doesn’t mean that I gave up on this work. I love my characters. I love making stories. And I will keep looking for places where I can continue to draw what I want to! thank you all"

The “doesn’t mean that I gave up on this work” part gives me hope that she might continue it on her own someday, because I genuinely enjoy this series, and I’m sure many others do too. I feel like the reason the latest chapters have seemed so rushed is because she probably got the news around that time that the series would end at Volume 2, so she had to adjust the pacing to fit the remaining chapters. Especially since, from some of her other Twitter posts, it really looked like she originally intended for this to be a long-running series.

But this is Sal Jiang we’re talking about, she always makes creative and engaging yuri manga, so whatever future projects she has planned, I’m sure they’ll be just as interesting as her other works.

Damn Sal jiang getting axed is really unfortunate, while I have my criticisms it did seem like she had a lot to say with this one and it was fresh. The cancellation might explain why the pacing was faster since she didn’t know if she’d get another volume so all in all pretty big bummer she didn’t get to tell the story she wanted

This is unrelated but
The Flower Princess of Sylph is a good Yuri series to follow (・∀・)

Sorry to hear that this series too is axed.
Just when the readers start to invest towards the characters...ಠ_ಠ..

I have no idea how my PFP ends up a small square.
I think I used to have a PFP but I remove it and now it becomes like this.
I'm too lazy to change so .. I'm sorry that it makes you think you have a coffee stain on your screen Dx

I can't say I disagree, it really is A Lot... I'm finding it pretty tough to keep up with anything that's going on here. Still, it's a real shame to see it getting the axe :c

I really liked the series when it started. It felt like it had so much potential, but the moment the other witches got introduced the pacing just went completely out of the window. There are dozens of new characters and plot threads and ideas introduced each chapter, none of which are properly explored. I don't even know what's going on anymore in the latest chapter.
It pains me to say, but I honestly think the series deserved getting axed.

If you take into account how the comercial manga industry works, I think there are mangas that “deserve” the axe. Having a interesting story, being able to capture it in your manga and that it also entertains readers are three different obstacles, having one or two is not enough. Unironically speaking I am sure this one would have lived more in a seinen mangazine, or in Kirara. As I commented before I think this was going to be the magazine's first long manga but I assume that due to low popularity they decided to bet on the kpop idol one

Am I high or did the translation quality just dip? There were a lot of unnatural word choices and instances of bad phrasing.

I didn't notice anything amiss. Then again, the manga itself is confusing, maybe it comes from that.

It's the penultimate chapter and the rush is palpable.

Looks like Sal Jiang had planned a whole story around Ivet, Mary, Sabbath, the revolutionary organization, Hanako being impervious to magic, Sadako being a "monster" only tamed by Hanako, but the several hiatuses and the introducing of MMM with which both MC had more chemistry than with each other killed all the momentum. Everyone wanted Sadako and Hanako to have a romance, but the romance was with side characters, one of which was totally presenting as a "man".

I guess Sal Jiang had circumstances, or her editor botched their job, but the axe was inevitable here.

What's weird is how it's been licensed in French and in English, when it's not even sure the next volumes will ever come out physically in Japanese. Foreign publishers and readers got scammed.

Even though I generally disagree with the takes about this being oh-so-confusing or anything, I can't help but be reminded of Seifuku no Vampiress Lord. That one struggled too much because the setup was too slow and meandering, imo, so it never had a chance to get to the bigger plot. This one kinda tried the opposite but went too far that direction for many people's tastes, with throwing new stuff at people quite quickly when people wanted a more focused narrative, so it's now also dead before really getting to the wider plot.

Clearly not easy getting the balance exactly right.

Hopefully at least a nice final chapter of some description.

@Nya-chan What's MMM?

I have no expectations for even a slightly satisfying conclusion. The disappointment I have in how this manga turned out after such a strong first volume is immense.

MMM are Margaret, Marina and Moon, the 3 influencers living in Salem. Figures you forgot about their collective name.
