Time to bother the TL: why exactly is Yao Xiangsi(?) the "Patriarch" of her family? Is this some special meaning (afaik Buddhism has some title that is also commonly translated as "Patriarch") as opposed to Matriarch?

Does patriarch have a different meaning in China?

Just like "king" has been used as a title by some female rulers in real life history, I assume "patriarch" is also a title in this case. It implies that a man is supposed be the head of the family, so these people might also be deliberately calling her patriarch to emphasize that she is breaking social norms by leading her family despite being a woman.

I think the simpler explanation is that a lot of languages don't have an equivalence for gendered terms.

Yeah, I'm wondering about that. If it is an ungendered term, wouldn't "Head of the Yao Family" work better?

^Definitely soap opera-esque. The art is certainly nice.

Saw this floating around and thought the art was really pretty. Glad to see it show up on Dynasty.

Side note, they'll probably clear this up later, but I'm confused. So, Wu Qing, the maid, is a robot made in the likeness of Xiangsi's former lover, who was also named Wu Qing? But why did they show Wu Qing getting sold to the black market?

My guess is that the original Wu Qing was sold on the black market to Xiangsi, who treated her like dirt at first before falling for her. Then, however, she did something that resulted in Wu Qing's family dying, prompting Wu Qing to turn against her, after which she also perished (killed by security?). Later, Xiangsi has a robot commissioned to look just like Wu Qing and gives it (her?) her lover's old name because she cannot let go and wants a second chance.

I gathered that the original Wu Qing was just a regular friend of Xiangsi and the "mistress" thing was just them goofing off; Xiangsi reminisces about their friendship and fallout after the robot version introduces herself.

The robot version seems to be a Trojan horse manufactured by the ladies with the red hair and pink hair to get close access to Xiangsi. The sale of the robot through the black market, along with the memories she seems to carry, are a charade meant to obscure her true origins from both herself and Xiangsi. The fact that her creators still named her Wu Qing may make for pretty bad opsec, but maybe the name is meant to hurt and insult Xiangsi just like the face.

My takeaway from "it was you who killed my parents" is that the original Wu Qing's parents died due to the incident involving the plague vaccine that Xiangsi worked on. It would not make sense for public opinion turn against Xiangsi for causing the death of Wu Qing and her parents if they had been of low status, which again makes it unlikely that the original Wu Qing was sold to the Yao family.

"art is nice/beautiful/great?" nah it's the most life devoided artstyle that exists, EVERY chinese manwha has the same "perfect" artstyle this one has. there's nothing unique or original about it, not to mention every story seems like it was written by a 14 years old who just discovered arctic monkeys and think they're edgy and mysterious. I don't mean to hate on people who likes this, but whenever we get these chinese manwhas here I end up wondering "how come every chinese manwha looks the same? does seriously every artist want to draw this way? what happens to artist who don't adopt this artstyle, where are these manwhas?" idk man this all just seems really artificial and fake to me, nothing screams artistic freedom from all of these works

It's not really right to generalize that all Yuri/GL Manhuas are exactly the same, but many do follow a similar formula featuring pretty female leads. The reason for this could be that they're trying to appeal to a younger audience while adhering to beauty standards. In many Manhuas, characters who are portrayed as unattractive or dull are often cast as the "bad guys." However, there are some really good Manhuas that don't seem to be "written by a 14 year old", such as:
- lily
- Tamen de Gushi
- Soulmate
- Please bully me villainess!
- Listening the stars
- Prefect heroine wants possess me
- My food seems to be very cute
- Baili jin amongst mortals
- Straight girl trap
- Couple of minors
- She is cute today as well
- Mojito
- Dropping blue
- Long awaited feelings
- Im more dangerous then you
- My dear lass

Bruh, you just complimented "I Got a Girlfriend From a Shooting Star" for its art style a few weeks back lol, chill. People are allowed to have and enjoy art styles that you don't like. Plus, surely you are aware that there are dozens of yuri manhua that aren't posted on Dynasty. Feel free to venture out and broaden your horizons so that you don't say goofy stuff like "EVERY chinese manwha has the same "perfect" artstyle" xd

I don't exactly remember the comment I made and won't skim through my older comments -as most certainly you've done, just to get an unrelated counter argument- to check what I said, but I'm pretty sure I just said it was a breath of fresh air since it didn't have this horrendous artstyle so many chinese works have been using lately. surely as you and other comment said, there's others chinese works with different styles such as tamen de gushi which is great but lately there's been a rise of works with this same exact artstyle, just check the lasts chinese manwhas uploaded (mostly everything under the long strip tag) and you'll see. they share the same characteristic perfectionist artstyle and most of them an over the top edgy premise too

Man, this story is a hot mess. Post-apocalyptic power abuse where everyone is a horrible person... but they are all hot, somehow, so it's fine, I guess?

Your version appears to be closer to the canon than mine, I stand corrected. :-) What confused me was that the robot maid thought about her family and sister, but it must have been just memories implanted by pink+red hairs for verisimilitude. Also, when Xiangsi talks about "testing [her] so many times", she appears to be talking to Pink through the robot maid, so it might not even be Pink's first attempt.

Also, I have noticed on re-reading that the original Wu Qing had worn a choker/collar, so her calling Xiangsi "mistress" may have more meaning than just friend goofing around.

Green Tea Bitch is also Chinese, right? and isn't "photo-perfect" art like this.
