It's sort of a collective headcanon fact that the owls are itty bitty and lion and moose are fuggin huge

Taking a look at their episodes, the owls are much shorter than Kaban, but Lion and Moose are both only a little taller than her. So it's more Lion and Moose being exaggerated than everyone else.

This is a big long "how?". To my understanding, it's canon that all Friends are female. Even ignoring that, there's only ever one per species, so there's nobody to mate with anyway.
