I like it when people do interesting things with the Red String trope.

The story kinda reminds me of the MV for Kien Romance (the op of Edomae Elf). MC doesn't want a fated romance with someone she doesn't even know, so she cuts the thread and ties the other end to the woman she wants to be with. It's very gay.

Was slightly disappointed when this didn't turn out to be a Nanoha doujin about Fate Testarossa being a useless lesbian, but this is fine, too...

“Soulmate” is a very strange topic that is difficult to handle, because it’s literally FATE telling people to get together because they’re meant to. No matter if they’re compatible now or not

Or it's simply revealing that they are super-compatible and will get along great.

After the string first appeared on the MCs the moment when Amamiya (who may be on the autistic spectrum) first realized she has romantic feelings for Tsumugi, I got a distinct impression that it merely shows reciprocated or even potentially reciprocated feelings. Instead of wondering whether the person you like likes you back, you can just check the string, and if it's there, go for it. Of course, this implies that Tsumugi had like Amamiya all along, but I believe that much if obvious from her behavior, she just seems generally unaware that women can fall in love with each other, too.

Tsumugi is so in her head. And she's saying her pure feelings are getting played with but she already had a thing for her BEFORE the string showed up she just wasn't gonna say anything. So have her feelings ever actually been pure lol?

I’m happy to see this being picked up here, because on other sites like Dex it only has about two chapters and has been that way for a while. Hopefully we’ll get to see the other chapters here too. :)

These are the chapters from Mangadex. The group asked to be hosted here, too.

That's great to know ^_^

I hate my brain. One part of me is going, "Oooh, what a cute story!" While another part is having deep thoughts like, "Wouldn't having a string of fate just make people take their partner for granted? I bet cheating would be rampant."

Dear brain: please let me just enjoy it.

"Wouldn't having a string of fate just make people take their partner for granted? I bet cheating would be rampant."

The way I'm reading this is that the string-of-fate actually works by having people pair up that then genuinely love each other - now, obviously, in real-life people cheat on each other despite having their perfect partner they are absolutely in love with for any number of reasons, so that alone is not necessarily precluding the cheating aspect. But in principle according to what I got out of this so far is that these red-string-relationships do turn out romantically perfectly.

It's more about saying that other relationships can also be valid, even if they might not be as great or lasting.

The use of the word "unbinded" kind of irks me Shouldn't it be "unbound?"

Oh yes, I'm very glad the later chapters started using "fated love" rather than "binded". I don't know if that was a change in the original, the translation, or if it's just a coincidence, but I'll take it.

What a sweet, scatterbrained genki girl. I like her already.

And Tsumugi. My little baka, you were Yuno's favorite even before thread appeared. Don't force your life to be difficult.

Amamiya (who may be on the autistic spectrum)

Aaaa I'm glad it's not just me who thought this...!
As soon as page 16 through 18 of the first chapter, I was like "oh, I get her... girl, same..."

In that light, I really liked the exchange in chapter 3 where it's shown that she is perceptive and attentive, and that the disconnect is really just in communication -

I thought Amiyama-senpai was a person who just couldn't give a damn about others in class. But, she was just a little unintelligible...

Like, if I had a nickel, right? It's really nice to see it treated with kindness and understanding..

Holy Madokami this is adorable.

I do agree that an unfated love might've been more interesting. This is still executed so well, though.

And it's not like tied-together people who marry won't have incredibly unhappy marriages yet feel strongly pressured not to divorce because they feel they don't have a choice, right?

I was not expecting the soulmates manga to have supernatural as a tag lol. Although, that is basically what the trope's all about.

Senpai is much more expressive than I first thought. This is the first chapter we've gotten pretty much from her perspective. She said she fell in love I'm curious if that was before the string and the string just verified or was it after. I do hope Tsumugi stops the overthinking of just wanting to be with someone because you're NOT fated by the string.

I said this before I will say it again she liked Senpai BEFORE the string showed up she literally joined the archery club because of her. So let's stop fighting fate already girlypop.

The premise is so strange. She doesn't like the red string but it turns out it is not something you can fight against and now the manga is just a typical girl falling in love story.

Some people have talked about analogy about homosexuality or rebellion against what is forced upon you. I think this is about something less philosophical of that magnitude, but about something more common.

So, I think this is a take with a supernatural twist of that sort of situation where you keep running away from a good thing because it doesn't fit what your ideal is? Her idea of love and relationships, the good and bad, has been shaped from experiences and what she has observed, so much so it has become even all the media she consumes, her ideals are so fixed that she is ignoring the lovely person who seems to have always cared about her, the only change is that now this person is open about their feelings, and because it doesn't fit her ideal, she wants to keep denying it, dismissing her senpai's feelings and her own, so her idea of love stays the same as always.

I cannot say I haven't experienced something like that, and while I didn't have an arrow telling me so blatantly, I can remember ignoring everything until something forced me to confront it.... Or maybe I am just wrong lmao

Is chapter 4 supposed to have taken place before the chapter 2 date?

Could hug be translated as embrace, like with a more adult connotation? Cause I don't really see what innocence has to do with hugging.

Oh she absolutely liked her before the string, and if Sempai had managed to confess before the string popped out then they absolutely would be much more clearly dating together.

The problem is Tsumugi here is dealing with some childhood trauma. A divorce can be hard enough on a child, but in this case it was made so much worse by the fact that everyone around her acts as if it was only natural that her parents' marriage fell apart because of their lack of string. By everyone acting as if it was a mistake for them to get married in the first place.

Everyone, implicitly, even if they don't realize it, acting like her very existence is a mistake.

I don't think Tsumugi realizes this consciously herself in all honesty, but I do think that message was received by her and it's been a strong part of what is fueling her love of unbound relationships and her desire to have one herself. Because if she can just See such a relationship succeed then it will prove that there wasn't any inherent mistake in her being born from two people unbound by the string.

That being said, I do think that this is an unhealthy way of dealing with things and I do hope that she can come work through everything to be able to embrace the love that she does feel with her Senpai. I'm just saying that we're going to have to give our girl some grace here while she is doing so.
