other people here have talked about it already, but the specific flavor of isolation here is hitting home as an autistic girl. i may not be tall or butch (or an alien), but i understand being the resident freak, as well as even forgetting how to talk because you never do (early chapter 1). when you're always on the outside looking in, it's easy to have a warped sense of personhood.
and, it's interesting to me that the other students aren't Bad Guys in how they're framed? they're normal people who are just saying things without thinking too hard about the why. "it's funny" or "i'm just joking" may be true but they also don't negate any hurt your words cause. like for the alien girl marriage premise, it's refreshingly grounded and earnest. idk. looking forward to more, definitely
