I don't know if he's a he/him lesbian or if the gender is part of the pseudonym or if he just reads a whole lot of lesbian authors (I wonder if Rubyfruit Jungle has a Japanese translation) but he's clearly going far beyond his gender peers. Hell, just the bl angle alone, I know so many irl lesbians into that and I've never once seen it in yuri before this series.

I think you might be overthinking it a bit. Pretty sure it's just the former, rather than the latter. Kaoru is just still not used to being the pursued rather than the pursuer.
